The Family Series - Book Two
You're Not Alone, Kathryn
by Dee Price
Preface:
In the first story, Silence Is A Sound, Kathryn,
fighting a deep depression suddenly leaves Voyager to live on a basically
uninhabited planet. Two days later
Chakotay comes back to care for her.
Fifteen years later Tuvok, B'Elanna and Harry, after
eventually making it back to Earth, return to the planet in a ship with
enhanced drive capabilities, to find and return Kathryn and Chakotay to Earth,
and discover they now have three children, Adam age 11, Katie 9 and Jonathan
6. During their return trip home
Kathryn reveals to Chakotay she is again pregnant.
Upon arrival at Earth the family receives many honors,
including a new home and automatic scholarships for their children to attend
Starfleet Academy. Once all the fanfare
ended, the family settled in their new home, Kathryn and Chakotay renewed their
marriage vows and then awaited the birth of their next child.
* * * * *
Five months after their arrival back on Earth, Kathryn gave
birth to a beautiful baby girl, much to Katie's delight. She had light brown hair and blue/green
eyes, the dimples of her father and a sunny disposition. It seemed she always had a smile on her face
and with those dimples it only served to heighten her appearance.
As Chakotay had insisted their first daughter be named after
Kathryn and they had compromised on Katie, now Kathryn insisted he name this
daughter. After much deliberation he decided on the name Maori - pronounced
Mayoree. It was from his native heritage and related to the design and meaning
of his Tattoo. As if underscoring this
fact, Maori always seemed drawn to the Tattoo whenever Chakotay or Jonathan
were near or holding her, and on each occasion seemed to extend her tiny arm to
touch it.
Maori's birth had been particularly hard on Kathryn, even
though her first three on that planet, and without medical aid, had been easy.
It took her almost a month to recover, much to Chakotay's dismay. Kathryn blamed it on the excitement of
coming home, the long three month confinement and cramped ordeal of that trip,
and the stress of getting settled, but Chakotay would have none of that, saying
they simply would not have anymore children.
"Sweetheart, you are 58 and I know women routinely give
birth into age 70 now, but we have four beautiful and wonderful children and
that's enough. I don't want you going
through this anymore!"
"But honey, I would like to have one or two more,"
Kathryn protested.
Chakotay was adamant on no more children, even to the point
of threatening no more lovemaking and Kathryn had finally acquiesced. So one month after Maori's birth, they went
to Starfleet Base Hospital and both received their protective shots against
further pregnancies. This just served
to make their lovemaking all the sweeter, as with no precautions necessary now,
they were both able to enjoy loving one another to the fullest extent.
After Maori was brought home, Jonathan took it upon himself
to care for her and be her 'teacher' as he termed it, and conversely the two
formed a special and close bond. Whenever Jonathan was in Maori's sight she always reached out for him,
hugged him and would sit contentedly in his lap whenever he held her. He also read to her every night, and right
from the first day Maori was brought home, despite knowing she couldn't
understand.
"Jonathan you
know she doesn't understand anything," Kathryn had said one day.
"But that's what you did with me on the planet,
mom," he responded stubbornly.
Kathryn only smiled, knowing it to be true. She had read to all three children right
from birth and in truth was very pleased Jonathan was doing this.
With this bond between the two children it was only natural
Jonathan got Maori to say her first word. It was 'Papa'.
Each night before retiring, the family developed the ritual
of going into the backyard to the sculpture Bartu, of 'the far away village' on the planet, had given them the day
before they left for Earth.
The sculpture, which one night Adam had named The Family,
originally had a mother sitting in a chair and holding a baby, the father
kneeling on one knee to the side and reaching with one hand to the baby's head,
and two young children, a boy and a girl, sitting at the mother's feet. Chakotay, Kathryn and the children would sit
and look lovingly at this sculpture and the significance that it represented
them.
However, once Maori joined the family, Chakotay spent a
great deal of time searching out a sculptor who could match the craftsmanship
and materials, and had him sculpt a young lad standing on the other side of the
mother and with both hands on the arm of the chair. Once completed, it was joined to the sculpture and "The
Family" was now complete, with a mother, father and four children.
The setting also gave it an almost reverent, serene
appearance, as it sat beneath an Arbor Chakotay had built and which was now
heavy with the flowers from the roses that had been planted on each side, their
entwining vines trailing up and through the Arbor. With the heavy fragrance of
the flowers now permeating the air, this area became an honored, quiet place to
enjoy.
* * * * *
Five years later.
The Shuttle drew up in front of the large white house and
Jonathan quickly hugged his 'Aunt B'Elanna', thanked her for bringing him home,
said goodbye to Tom and B'Elanna's children, Thomas and Kathryn, and ran for
the house. Not seeing his father inside he headed out the back door and saw him
pruning the roses at the Arbor.
Running towards him he called out "Hi Dad!"
Chakotay smiled as he turned to Jonathan, they hugged and
Jonathan gave his father a kiss on the cheek. "The roses are beautiful right now, aren't they poppa?"
"They certainly are, Jonathan, and so full of flowers,
too."
"Momma will be pleased," and at the mention of
Kathryn a pained look crossed Chakotay's face. Jonathan missed this as he looked around, spotted Maori on a blanket in
the shade and ran over to her, sliding on his knees the last two feet.
Maori, now five
years old, turned and smiling broadly quickly threw her arms around Jonathan's
neck, as she said, "Hi Jonathan, I missed you."
Chakotay smiled as he stood for a few minutes watching the
two engage in animated conversation, interspersed with laughter, and felt a
lump form in his throat. He felt so
blessed. He had a wonderful family and
loved them all so very much. Adam was
now a junior in High School, having skipped a year and Katie a freshman. Jonathan was in the fifth grade, having
elected not to skip a grade, and an excellent student as well, although he
drove his teachers to distraction with his boundless energy and unending
questions.
Suddenly he heard Maori ask Jonathan to tell her a story and
Jonathan immediately launched into a story about Kolopak, Chakotay's father and
their grandfather, a story which Chakotay had told the children many times on
the planet. Chakotay marveled at this
as Jonathan was passing on his people's legends to Maori, even as he had told
his children. As he listened he felt
great pride as Jonathan wasn't forgetting anything and Maori sat in absolute
rapt attention. When Jonathan was
finished Maori said, "Tell it again Jonathan so I wont forget."
"You wont forget, Maori. I'll keep telling the stories until you remember and know them,
then you can tell your children someday, like I will tell mine when I'm
married."
Chakotay, who could no longer see the roses with his eyes full
of tears, decided he would finish the pruning later, and after rubbing his eyes
to clear the wetness called out, "Hey kids, hungry? Let's have a bowl of fruit."
Both jumped up, helped their dad clean up all the pruning
debris, put the tools away and then trouped inside.
After their refreshment everyone went into the main
room. Chakotay sat at the desk and
picked up a Padd containing a story he was reading, while Maori lay down on the
couch to nap, her head on Jonathan's leg, as he studied a Padd from school.
Soon Chakotay tossed the Padd on the desk, leaned back and
as he started rubbing his forehead gave a huge sigh. Jonathan looked up, smiled and said, "Only one more day,
dad."
Chakotay made a face. "I miss your mother so much Jonathan. I just hurt all over."
"I know. I miss mom, too. It's almost as bad as that day when we first got back to Earth
and you and mom had to go into Starfleet for all that business. I've never felt so bad in my life, but I
guess the difference now is that you are still here while mom is gone."
Chakotay nodded. "You have that at least, but this is the first time in twenty-one
years, twenty-seven counting time on Voyager, that your mom and I have been
apart. I just feel empty without her
here."
"Wow!" said Jonathan using his favorite
expression. "That's a long time to
never be apart. No wonder you hurt so badly! But mom felt she had to see Tuvok with him being sick and all. I'm sorry
you had to stay home to take care of us"
Chakotay smiled as he rubbed at the back of his neck. "Your mother and I made a vow after
that first time that we would never leave you kids alone again, but I'll sure
be . . . " At that moment the Incoming Communiqué button started beeping and
flashing. Chakotay quickly reached to
the console, punched the button and Kathryn's face appeared, eliciting a huge
smile on Chakotay's face.
Jonathan seeing his mother jumped up and ran over beside his
dad. "Hi Mom, I've missed
you!"
"How are both my sweethearts?" asked Kathryn with
a big smile.
"Lonely as hell," grumbled Chakotay.
Jonathan laughed. "Dad has been turned inside out and moping around the house all
week without you mom."
Chakotay nodded his head and smiled. "And that doesn't even say half of
it!"
"I miss you terribly, honey," Kathryn said as she
placed her hand on the screen.
Chakotay placed his
hand opposite hers and said, "Let's not do this again, hon."
"Agreed, it's a terrible feeling to be without
you," responded Kathryn, her eyes glistening with moisture.
"How is Tuvok?" he asked as he tried to swallow
the lump out of his throat.
"He's much better and up and around since
yesterday. We have to remember he is
actually quite old, but the Doctor says he will be fine. And T'Pel has been so wonderful and
gracious, says to send you their greetings." Chakotay nodded.
"Oh - one thing I wanted to be sure and tell you,"
Kathryn continued, "is that I will
be back on the evening shuttle tomorrow night."
"Wont be soon enough," said Chakotay. "Give me an in-space call to say the
exact time, okay hon?"
"I will. How's
Maori?"
Jonathan looked over at the couch and started laughing. Leaning toward the screen he whispered,
"She's pretending to be asleep," and immediately a giggle was heard
from the couch.
Maori hurried over to the desk. "Hi mommy, I miss you, when are you coming home?"
"Tomorrow night, sweetheart." After a few more minutes the conversation
ended with Kathryn and Chakotay looking longingly at each other.
The next day seemed interminably long and finally the family
got in the Shuttle and headed for the Transport Dock. The ship arrived right on time and when Kathryn stepped out
Chakotay and she hugged briefly, then Kathryn hugged and kissed all the
children before turning back into Chakotay's arms once again.
Finally Adam had to almost pry them apart so they could all
head for home.
* * * * *
Two nights later Chakotay was sitting quietly in front of
The Family when Adam walked up and sat down beside him. "Am I disturbing you, Dad?"
"Not at all Adam, just relaxing for a few
minutes."
"May I ask you a question?" and as Chakotay
nodded, Adam went on. "You know
Jennie, the girl that called last night reminding me about an assignment . . . well I like her a lot, but I was wondering -
how do you know if you're in love?"
Chakotay smiled as he looked at Adam. "Worried about love at your age?"
"Well I see the love you and mom have and I sometimes
worry that I'll never find a mate and enjoy that kind of deep love."
"Don't be anxious to fall in love, Adam. You have plenty of time and I'm sure . . .
"
"But you and mom," he started to persist then fell
silent.
Chakotay looked thoughtfully at his oldest son, now sixteen
years old. Clearing his throat he said, "You have to remember Adam, your
mom and I were on Voyager for six years without any spoken feelings between
us. She wouldn't let me near her and it
was only after she left the ship and freed her mind that your mother let me
into her life." He hesitated a
moment watching Adam closely, then continued, "True love is like a sacred
flame, and nothing will diminish its glow or change it's destiny."
"That's the kind of love I mean, Dad. You and mom have such a beautiful and
special love and relationship, and I desperately want to find a mate to share
that kind of love! I'm just afraid I
wont," he ended softly.
"Don't feel in a rush or be so anxious, Adam. Take your time to find your mate and if
Jennie is the one you will know eventually. It doesn't happen right away if it's a true love . . . " He hesitate a
moment before continuing, "you know that first year on the planet, even though
your mother and I knew we loved each other very much we had to nurture our love
and feed it constantly, just like a garden. We continually expressed our love to each other, and not just in words,
and it grew every day. Even after all
these years it is still growing because we constantly let each other know how
deeply we care. You'll find your mate
Adam, I wouldn't worry."
Adam nodded his head and absently picked at the grass as he
silently sat looking at the sculpture that so represented the love within their
family. Suddenly he smiled, rose to one
knee and leaning forward hugged his father. "Thanks for sharing, Dad. Guess I'll turn in now. I love you . . . goodnight," and rising walked toward
the house.
As Adam neared the backdoor he saw his mother standing
quietly in the doorway. "Everything all right sweetheart?" she asked.
Adam smiled and gave his mom a big hug. "Yes mom, just talking about life and
love." Then looking at her said,
"I love you mom . . . goodnight," and after kissing her on the
cheek headed for the stairs.
"I love you too, Adam. Goodnight," she said as she watched him take the stairs two steps
at a time. Turning, she walked out to
Chakotay, who was still sitting on the ground. Sitting down she asked, "Man-to-man or father-son?"
Chakotay put his arm around her and pulled her tight to
him. "A little of both I
think."
"Can you tell me or is it private? All Adam said was something about life and
love."
Chakotay kissed the top of her head as he tightened his arm
around her. "Our son is afraid he wont find a mate to share the special
deep love like we have."
"Oh my," was all Kathryn could say.
Both sat quietly looking at The Family with Chakotay
counting his blessings. H silently thanked the Spirits for bringing Kathryn
into his life and providing him with such a wonderful family.
* * * * *
Following dinner the next evening, the entire family moved
into the front room to read and relax. Katie was the only one of the family not home, having gone over to Tom
and B'Elanna's after dinner to visit with their daughter Kathryn.
Thirty minutes later a man suddenly burst through the door
and pointing a Phaser at them yelled, "All of you over by that wall,
now!"
"What the hell," said Chakotay as he stood.
"I said now, all of you move!" the man growled.
"What's the meaning of this?" asked Kathryn as she
stood and moved beside Chakotay.
The man remained silent, just motioning with the Phaser for
all of them to gather together. As they
were moving to the place indicated the man suddenly stepped forward, grabbed
Maori and lifting her to his chest took two steps back.
"You son of a bitch! Leave my daughter alone,"
yelled Chakotay and in a father's protective mode, and without concern for
himself, suddenly moved forward and dove at the man.
Even as his shoulder drove into the man's chest, Chakotay
reached out with his left arm and wrapped it around Maori's waist, but as all
three crashed to the floor the familiar whine of a discharging Phaser was
heard.
"Chakotay!" screamed Kathryn as she looked at the
jumbled mass of unmoving bodies.
The kidnapper untangled himself from Chakotay and Maori,
jumped to his feet, took one look at the two on the floor and then at the
family, and turned and ran out the door.
Kathryn, frozen by the sudden flurry of action, stared down
at Chakotay laying motionless and face down on the floor, his arm still wrapped
around Maori, who was now very frightened by what happened and crying.
Rousing herself and realizing Chakotay had been the one
shot, Kathryn turned and yelled at Adam as she moved to her husband and yelled,
"Activate the EMH. Hurry!"
Adam ran to the wall console and punched at the EMH Disc
hanging beside it.
"What is the nature ... "
"Here Doctor, " cried out Kathryn who was now
kneeling by Chakotay's head.
The Doctor hurried over to where the two children and
Kathryn were huddling on the floor over a prostate figure. As Adam joined them
and kneeled down he called out "Dad!" and rolled Chakotay onto his
back, revealing the phaser wound in Chakotay's upper chest.
Kathryn gasped and the Doctor after this brief look said,
"Contact the Base Hospital, this is bad," and then retrieved his
Medical TriCorder.
Even as Kathryn turned to tell Adam he was already back at
the console and rammed his finger on the red button marked Emergency.
"Base Hospital," came the anonymous voice.
"My dad has been shot, we need help1" Adam yelled.
"Who is you father young man?" came the response.
"Chakotay!" cried out Adam.
"Place the Transporter Badge on Chakotay's chest and we
will immediately transport him."
Adam grabbed the Transporter badge, moved quickly to
Chakotay's side and placed it on his Dad's chest. "There are five of us - ready," yelled Adam and a moment
later Chakotay and family disappeared in the shimmering transporter beam.
As they materialized on the floor of the Hospital, two
Doctors were waiting and quickly lifted Chakotay onto a mobile bio bed and he
was wheeled behind a curtain. Kathryn
and the children started to follow, but a Nurse stepped up and said, "I'm
sorry, you can't go in there."
Kathryn's eyes became hard as steel as she said, "I'm
not leaving my husband."
The Nurse, seeing that look, hesitated a moment, then
nodding her head asked them to stand and wait over by the wall, turned and
quickly disappeared behind the curtain.
A few seconds later a third Doctor strode briskly into the
room and immediately stepped into the area where Chakotay was being
treated. Kathryn shortly heard an expletive.
The new doctor came out from behind the curtain and walked
over to the family. "I'm Doctor
Garcia and you are the wife?"
"Yes, I'm Kathryn. How is he Doctor," and in a controlled tone added, ". . . bottom
line?"
The Doctor looked directly into Kathryn's eyes and seeing
only strong resolve said quietly, "I wont lie to you. It's real bad. The chances of your husband's survival are about five
percent."
Jonathan cried out "No," and tightened his arm
around Maori shoulders, who still not understanding everything going on but
knowing something bad had happened to her father, stood silently crying with
one arm wrapped tightly around Jonathan's leg.
Adam on the other side of his mom muttered "Oh Great
Spirits," and Kathryn felt like all her breath had just been smashed out
of her.
Doctor Garcia continued, "We are going to start
operating now and will do everything we can. In the meantime, why don't you and the children go into the waiting room
next door?"
Kathryn shook her head as she turned and stared at the
curtain. "We'll wait right here,
Doctor."
Doctor Garcia, in complete and compassionate understanding,
nodded his head and then asked a Nurse to get a couple of chairs. At that
moment a steady whine indicating a flat line on a monitor echoed throughout the
room.
"Nooooooo!" screamed Kathryn.
Doctor Garcia ran behind the curtain and for the next five
minutes a flurry of activity could be heard. Kathryn felt as if she were in a nightmare, as she watched nurses
quickly move in an out and heard the Doctors commands and requests for
different medical tools and hypo sprays.
Suddenly all activity behind the curtain stopped and
everything became quiet. Kathryn took a
sharp intake of breath and steeled herself for the worst as Doctor Garcia stepped
out from behind that concealing curtain and walked slowly towards them, wiping
at his forehead with the crook of his elbow.
As he reached Kathryn he placed a hand on her shoulder and
squeezed. Kathryn tensed and thought I've lost him.
"We have managed to restart his heart, but everything
is still touch and go. That's all I can tell you right now."
Kathryn, realizing she had been holding her breath as Doctor
Garcia approached, slowly exhaled and her knees suddenly felt weak. If it weren't for Adam and Jonathan standing
on each side of her with their arms around her waist, she was sure she would
have dropped to the floor.
Regaining her balance she nodded her head and gratefully
accepted help from the nurse back to the chair.
"I must get back in," said the Doctor. "I'll have someone give you periodic
reports," and he again disappeared behind the curtain that kept her from
seeing Chakotay.
Suddenly she felt Jonathan's hand grab hard on her waist and
looking down at him saw his eyes go into a blank stare.
"Dad?" whispered Jonathan.
Kathryn's heart skipped a beat as she realized he was in
contact with Chakotay's spirit. Closely
she watched his eyes and saw him nod his head and whisper, "I love you
Dad," and his eyes became clear, but glistening with tears.
Leaning over to hug him she whispered in his ear, "What
did your father say Jonathan?"
Jonathan, his voice breaking replied, "Dad says we are
all still a family and to take care of you - and said he loved us
all." Then Jonathan started
sobbing quietly into his mother's shoulder.
Adam and Maori silently watched this scene, their hearts
pounding. Finally Kathryn straightened
up, her eyes too, full of tears. Tightening her arm around Adam's shoulder she reached out for Maori, who
came and climbed onto her lap. "Your father's spirit contacted Jonathan and told him we are a
family and that he loves us."
Adam nodded and then watched as Jonathan walked over to the
curtain concealing Chakotay, sit cross-legged on the floor and taking hold of
the curtain hold it gently to his forehead. His father had taught Jonathan how to contact his Spirit Guide on the
planet and at a time like this it was logical his father would try to contact
Jonathan. Adam had also tried to learn,
but whether disbelief or not ready, he never could learn who his Spirit Guide
was. After this was over, whatever the
outcome, he vowed he would try again.
Maori, seeing her mother's tears, lay her head on Kathryn's
chest and as her tears started again asked, "Will daddy be alright?"
"We don't know yet, sweetheart," said Kathryn in a
choked voice. "If the Spirits are
willing he will be."
* * * * *
Two anguish and pain-filled hours passed, with the family
remaining in their position by the wall and awaiting word on Chakotay's
situation. Periodically a Nurse would come over and give them short words
of "He's still with us,"
"Your husband is a fighter," and "Nothing new to report."
Twice the mournful steady sound of a flat line came from behind the curtain,
further wrenching the family's pain.
At last the tears stopped as the dazed family settled into a
semi-shock condition and just stared straight ahead until at long last Doctor
Garcia stepped out from behind the shield of privacy for the patient. After a
quick glance down at Jonathan holding the curtain, he approached the family,
rubbing at his eyes. Jonathan quickly rose and followed him while Kathryn stood
and stared carefully at the doctor.
"We finally have your husband stabilized, but that
really doesn't mean anything yet. We
are going to move him to a private Intensive Care room - and knowing your
concern, you and your children may sit with him in that room. We will also have a Nurse there at all times
and I'll be close by."
Kathryn nodded. "Thank you Doctor. We appreciate all you
are doing. We also appreciate you allowing us to stay here and now accompanying
him to the other room."
The Doctor reached out and tenderly touched his fingertips
to Kathryn's cheek and smiled. "The love your family has is already a legend around here. I'm as determined not to lose the Commander
as you are."
The shimmering light of a Transporter Beam was seen behind
the curtain and Doctor Garcia then called one of the Nurses over to escort the
family to the Intensive Care room, told Kathryn he would check back in a few
moments and left.
As the Nurse escorted them into Chakotay's room, Kathryn's
eyes widened and she gave an involuntary gasp. Jonathan stopped abruptly and squeezed Kathryn's hand very hard as he
got his first glimpse of his father: Chakotay lay barely breathing, as a
ventilator massaged his chest, and whiter than the sheets.
Kathryn walked up beside the bed and took hold of Chakotay's
hand. It was ice cold. The attending nurse stood at the panel
monitoring the current readings after the transport and nodded at Kathryn, a
look of tenderness on her face.
Kathryn stood silently looking down at Chakotay's white
face, so different from his natural brown tone that it made him seem whiter
than maybe he really was. "I love you, sweetheart, please don't leave
us. We all need you," Kathryn
whispered as she squeezed his hand. "I need you."
Suddenly she remembered Katie and her heart thudded against
her chest. In the preceding trauma her
mind had been on her husband and she had not thought to call and let her know
what happened. Turning to Adam she said
softly, "Katie."
Adam, immediately knowing what she meant, nodded his head
and after a long look at his father, left the room, electing to use a wall
panel communiqué on the corridor wall rather than the one in this room. Jonathan, along with Maori, moved closer to
his mother and after squeezing his mom's hand, tightened his arm around Maori's
shoulder, who sensing her father's dire situation, clung tightly to Jonathan as
before, with both arms wrapped around one of his legs.
* * * * *
"Well I should really get home, Aunt B'Elanna,"
said Katie.
"Alright Katie, I'll have Tom take you," and as
she started to go to the door to call to Tom the Incoming Communiqué button on
the wall panel started chirping. Smiling, she said, "I bet that's your mom or dad now wanting to
know when you're coming home," and both Katie and B'Elanna laughed.
"I bet you're right," answered Katie.
B'Elanna tapped the button and Adam's somber face appeared.
"Hi Aunt B'Elanna," he said softly.
B'Elanna immediately sensing pain in Adam's tone asked,
"What's wrong, Adam?"
"Dad's been shot and in Intensive Care." Then in a choking voice he added, "He's
not expected to live . . . Mom's with him now. Can you bring Katie?"
"On our way!" she yelled and turned and ran for
the backdoor yelling for Tom and Thomas. Katie, hearing Adam's news had put her hands to her face and was now
crying, with Kathryn putting her arm around her shoulders trying to comfort her
friend as best she could.
Twenty minutes later Katie came running into the hospital
room, followed closely by Tom, B'Elanna, and their children. Katie ran up to her mom, tears streaming
down her cheeks. "Mom! How's
Dad?"
Kathryn, sitting at Chakotay's bedside, looked up, her eyes
full of pain and anguish. "He's
still with us, Katie. He's fighting,
but the Doctor isn't hopeful."
B'Elanna moved behind Kathryn and placing her hands on her
shoulders asked softly, "What happened, Kathryn?"
Without taking her eyes off her husband Kathryn slowly and
quietly explained about the man breaking into the house, grabbing Maori and
Chakotay attacking him trying to get Maori back and being shot in the process.
"Sounds exactly like something Chakotay would do,"
said Tom softly. "Protecting his family with complete disregard for his
own safety."
Kathryn nodded then said, "B'Elanna, will you and Tom
take care of the children? I am staying
here and the Doctor has agreed and has ordered an extra bed "
"No!" said Jonathan raising his voice. "I'm not leaving Dad. I'm staying here!"
Kathryn put her arm around his shoulders. "I understand how you feel Jonathan,
but only one can stay and that will be me, sweetheart."
Adam, ever the thinker, said, "No mom, one of us will
always stay with you. We'll set up a
rotation between the three of us and will sit with Dad whenever you need some
sleep."
Kathryn again shook her head as she kept her eyes on
Chakotay. "I want to be at his
side when he regains consciousness. I
wont leave him."
"Actually, Kathryn," said B'Elanna, "Adam's
idea is pretty sound. You will still be
in the room, the kids will just spell you occasionally."
Kathryn looked up at B'Elanna. "I know it's sound and I know the children want to be here
too. It's just that I don't want to
leave Chakotay's side. I want to be right here because I know he will wake up -
even if it's to say goodbye," she said, her voice breaking on the last
phrase.
B'Elanna looked at the four children, all with extremely
forlorn looks on their faces. "Alright, but we'll arrange a rotation with Jonathan, Katie and
Adam so they can be here too." As
she looked at them she saw Jonathan press tightly against the bed and take hold
of the sheet, his knuckles white with holding tightly, his body language
leaving no doubt he wasn't going to leave his Dad's side. "Jonathan will stay tonight and we'll
talk with Adam and Katie about their turns," she quickly added.
At 2300 hours Chakotay had still not even stirred, let alone
wake up. Doctor Garcia had been in several times and the Nurse replaced by
another after a full briefing of the situation. Kathryn requested Tom and B'Elanna take the children home so they
could get some rest and despite their protests, Adam, Katie and Maori
grudgingly left with Tom and B'Elanna. Kathryn knew she could not change
Jonathan's mind, thus didn't even try.
On the way home Adam requested a stop at their home for a
minute and he, Katie and Maori walked around the house to the back and over to
The Family. However, instead of sitting on the grass all three walked up to the
sculpture and put their hands on the father, closed their eyes and stood
quietly. Tom, B'Elanna and their
children, standing at the corner of the house were heart broken to see this,
knowing they were asking the Spirits to save Chakotay's life, while at the same
time gathering strength for themselves from The Family sculpture.
At the hospital Kathryn had insisted Jonathan lay down,
while she remained sitting bedside the bed, holding Chakotay's hand. Doctor Garcia came in around midnight,
checked all the readings and looking at Kathryn said, "No change, which by
itself is a good sign. He's still
hanging on, even if by a thread. Look,
why don't you lay down with your boy. You're right here and the Nurse is here. It wont even take a second to call you if . . . "
"I'm fine Doctor, thank you," said Kathryn firmly
while shaking her head. The Doctor
nodded and left for the night.
At 2 am Jonathan got up and went to his mom's side. "Why don't you lay down for awhile mom,
I'll watch Dad."
Kathryn put her arm around Jonathan and shook her head as
she glanced at him. "I'm fine,
honey. If I get a little tired I can
lay my head down on the bed. You go
back to sleep."
"I'll lay down, but I wont be able to sleep, Mom."
Kathryn smiled. "At least you'll be resting sweetheart."
An hour later Kathryn lay her forehead down on she and
Chakotay's joined hands and kept repeating her silent pleas, "Don't leave
me my love. I need you."
*Kathryn*
Kathryn raised her head and looked around. Who had called her? Then she heard it again.
*Kathryn*
It was then she realized it was inside her mind. Silently
she answered, *Chakotay*
*You are not alone, Kathryn,* the voice said. *You are
not alone. *
Kathryn looked at Chakotay and saw he was still
unconscious. Was he trying to contact
her? Had she imagined his voice? It was
so clear in her mind and he had often told her those same words on Voyager. She kept looking at her dear husband hoping
to see some sign but he remained unmoving and unconscious. Squeezing his hand she said in a whisper,
"Don't leave me Chakotay. If I
lose you I'll fall back into that black pit. I need you my darling, please don't leave me."
For the next three days and nights, other than a quick visit
to use the facility in the room, Kathryn refused to leave Chakotay's side, as
did an adamant Jonathan, who lay on the bed at night and if awake sitting with
his mother, as well as sitting beside her during the day. Adam and Katie rotated every other day, and
at night had Tom and B'Elanna take them by the house so they could stand by The
Family, their foreheads and hands touching the father.
Tom, B'Elanna, and their children of course, along with
Harry and Neelix came every day, as well as various former crewmembers of
Voyager stopping by. The Nurses maintained their twenty-four hour vigil and Dr.
Garcia either came by or checked in every hour. He felt it was a miracle Chakotay was still here. During those
three days, with Chakotay's condition remaining the same, the Doctor also made
some minor repairs on Chakotay's heart, which had been nicked, singed and
bruised by the Phaser blast.
One day Tom and B'Elanna even brought the EMH, but once
activated he became so nervous and agitated wanting to care for the Commander
and not being allowed to, they decided against further visits by him.
In the middle of the night of what would be the fourth
morning since the attack, Kathryn had dozed off, her right cheek lying on the
side of the bed. Gradually she became
aware of something warm touching her cheek and although still half asleep,
reached with her hand and took hold of whatever it was and slowly raised her
head. As her eyes cleared she found
herself looking into Chakotay's soft brown eyes!
"Chakotay," she said in a soft exclamation as she
stood and bent her head over his face.
He looked at her but didn't say a word and Kathryn bent her
head down and kissed those wonderful lips. "Chakotay?"
Slowly a smile played at the corner of his mouth and then a
quiet "Kathryn" was spoken.
"Oh my darling, my dearest," she exclaimed as she
placed both hands on his face and again kissed him. Turning to the bed she called, "Jonathan," and as
Jonathan opened his eyes and saw his mom standing over Chakotay, alarm and then
panic registered in his eyes and he leaped from the bed to his mother's side.
"Dad!" he exclaimed upon seeing his father
awake. "Oh wow, you're okay!"
Chakotay slowly reached out and touched Jonathan's
cheek. "You're still here and
taking care of your mother," he said softly. "Thank you son." Then looking at Kathryn,
"Maori?"
"She's fine sweetheart, she's with Tom and
B'Elanna."
He nodded and closed his eyes. Meanwhile the Nurse had immediately hailed Doctor Garcia and
while waiting for him was checking all the monitors. Doctor Garcia hurried in a
few minutes later looking half asleep and made a check on Chakotay's condition
as Kathryn and Jonathan stepped aside with their arms around each other and
smiles tugging at their lips.
Two minutes passed as Kathryn and Jonathan watched and
waited. Finally the Doctor nodded at
the Nurse and turned to them. "All
his readings are normal - this is virtually a miracle! Don't ask me how or why but I firmly believe
your husband is going to be alright."
The Doctor then turned back to Chakotay and he and the Nurse
continued tending him for a few more minutes and checking the monitors on all
the readings. The Doctor smiled. "I'm sure he's going to make it, his
vitals are getting stronger by the minute."
Despite the hour, Kathryn, after again kissing a drowsy
Chakotay, said she was going to call the children and walked to the wall panel
and placed a call to Tom and B'Elanna's house.
As B'Elanna's sleepy face appeared and she saw Kathryn,
alarm filled her eyes, but Kathryn smiled and had Jonathan step in front of
her. "Tell her Jonathan."
Jonathan smiled and said in an excited voice, "Dad's
awake, he's going to be alright!"
B'Elanna broke out in a big smile and turning away from the
monitor yelled, "Adam! Katie!
Maori! Wake up and come in here, it's your mom. Your father's awake!"
* * * * *
Adam and Katie, holding onto Maori's hand, raced into the
hospital room, followed closely by Tom, B'Elanna and their children. As Tom later said, "I think we broke
all speed records and every law in the city getting here."
The kids were ecstatic, and Maori, as expected cried, but
this time in sheer happiness that her father was all right. Chakotay held tight to Kathryn's hand while
on the other side of the bed, the children, bubbling with excitement and
happiness, kissed Chakotay's cheek while at the same time touching, squeezing
and holding his other hand.
The Doctor and Nurse, who had stepped back for this happy
moment, finally moved back to the bedside, and Kathryn and the children stepped
to the back wall. At this time she decided to make a quick call to Harry and
asked him to notify everybody else. Shortly after, Harry and Neelix arrived, both smiling broadly as they
greeted Chakotay.
During the following week, Chakotay continued to gain
strength and improve, and despite his objections Kathryn stayed in the
room. The only difference being when
Chakotay slept she got some rest herself on the neighboring bed. "I almost lost
you three times, my darling, and you're damn well not making me leave this room
until we go home together!"
Chakotay smiled and looking at his children said he was too
weak to fight 'this stubborn woman', which caused them all to laugh in delight.
On the seventh day after regaining consciousness, Chakotay
was released from the hospital. As Tom
landed the shuttle out front Chakotay and Kathryn were shocked to see the front
porch decorated with the sign "Welcome home Dad, we love you."
Upon entering the house they found it full of not only
family and friends, but even Kathryn's sister Phoebe, who had flown in to help
welcome him home. After everyone left,
Chakotay, Kathryn and the children went out into the backyard and sat in front
of The Family. "I missed seeing
this," said Chakotay softly as he put his arm around Kathryn. Then he looked at her. "You know, in
the back of my mind I seem to remember your voice asking me not to leave
you."
Kathryn smiled. "I constantly asked that my love. If I had lost you, and despite our wonderful children, I felt sure I
would have slid back down into that black hole. I can't stand the thought of being without you, and I know the
children feel the same way."
Suddenly both became aware all the children had risen and
gone up to the sculpture. Placing their
hands on the father and leaning in so their foreheads were also touching, all
four were standing silent with their eyes closed. They remained this way a good minute before all kissed the father
and backed away, then turning to their parents, who were watching this in
wide-eyed amazement, walked up to them and one by one hugged and kissed their
father and mother. Then Adam simply
said, "We're a family again."
As the children walked inside to retire for the evening,
Kathryn, knowing Chakotay was tired on first day out of the hospital, suggested
they retire as well.
"Not just yet, hon," Chakotay said and he rose, took
Kathryn's hand and they walked to The Family and lovingly caressed it, then
hugged each other tightly.
"I wonder if Bartu will ever realize how much this gift
means to us, how much it transcends being just a sculpture of a family? It has a mystical, spiritual bond of love
with and for us," said Chakotay softly.
Kathryn smiled and nuzzled her head into Chakotay's
neck. "And now you are back with
us, we are home, and as Adam so eloquently expressed it, "We are family
again."
*****
It took Chakotay over two months before he somewhat felt
like himself again. But Kathryn and the
children didn't care how easily he tired or that he couldn't play with Maori
like he did Adam, Katie and Jonathan on the planet - all of them understood and
were just grateful he was alive. The
EMH, although not really having anything to do other than check the blood
pressure, heart and keep a daily check on his physical condition, none-the-less
finally felt needed.
As a follow-up to his shooting, Chakotay had to see Dr.
Garcia twice a week and on one occasion Kathryn mentioned the EMH. The Doctor
was amazed they had him but said he was probably out-of-date as to the reason
Starfleet had him listed as destroyed. At that remark, Chakotay asked if he could be updated. Doctor Garcia was silent for a few moments
as he looked at him, then said quietly, "Tell you what, bring his disc
next time and I'll see what I can do."
On their next visit Chakotay noted the Doctor had another,
much larger computer on a rollaway cart. The Doctor simply said he was trying to brush up on any of the latest
techniques of treating Phaser injuries and had it brought to him this
morning. However, after the Nurse left
the room the Doctor asked Chakotay for the EMH disc and slipped it into a slot
in the computer, then while he conducted his exam of Chakotay's injuries, and
gave him more treatment on his injured heart, a slight clicking and whirring sound
was heard, causing Kathryn to get a I-know-what-you're-doing impish smile.
When the Doctor finished treating Chakotay he walked to the
computer, retrieved the disc and handed it back to Chakotay, telling him he
would run it through updates each visit, but if Chakotay or Kathryn ever
mentioned that to anyone, he, the Doctor, would brand them as liars. Both men had a hearty laugh as Chakotay
pocketed the disc, then both Chakotay and Kathryn gave Doctor Garcia a
heartfelt hug and left for home.
Chakotay spent what energy he had puttering in the yard,
reading, participating in civic functions, and attending the school activities
the children were in. Adam played in
the school band, finding he was quite adept with the Clarinet, much to Harry's
glee. Katie was in the Choir and
sometimes sang solo, while Jonathan, the athletic one of the bunch, was on the
school track team.
However, at Jonathan's very first meet he learned a painful
lesson in humility from his father. Jonathan won his event quite easily, and afterwards stood on the track,
looked up at his parents and excitedly started jumping up and down while
shouting, "I won! I won! I won!"
Chakotay had immediately called him over to his seat and
quietly explained to him that yes he had won, but his actions when the race was
over was an embarrassment and an insult to his competitors, as well as
exhibiting poor sportsmanship overall.
A very chagrined Jonathan immediately went to each
competitor and personally apologized for his behavior, and then followed that
by going to each opposing coach and offering his apology. Feeling his victory
now tainted by his behavior, when Jonathan accepted the victor's ribbon he
immediately turned and placed it around the neck of the second place finisher
saying, "I don't deserve this. At the end of the season if you think I
deserve to have this back you can give it to me, otherwise it's yours,"
and then quietly walked over and sat with his parents, who put their arms
around him and told him they loved him and were proud of him.
Before everyone realized it another year had gone by and
Maori proudly entered first grade, Adam started his Senior year while Katie
entered her sophomore year in High School and Jonathan, after Kathryn finally
relented and let the teachers move him beyond his grade, started his last year
in elementary school. Kathryn and Chakotay participated at length in civic
affairs and served as consultants and honorary dignitaries for Starfleet.
But once again tragedy struck the Chakotay family.
It was a beautiful day and Kathryn and Chakotay, returning
from a morning shopping trip, walked into the house, their arms full of
groceries. As they started to put them
away the Incoming Communiqué started chirping and Kathryn, after quickly wiping
her wet hands, punched the button. The
face of a very distraught Adam appeared.
"Mom! Dad! Katie's been injured and they have
transported her to the Base Hospital. Please come!" and the screen went black before Kathryn could say a
word.
Both turned and ran out the door, ignoring the remaining
groceries on the kitchen counter. Upon arrival at the Hospital a Security
guard, obviously waiting for their arrival, directed them to the Emergency
Wing. Entering that area a Nurse took
hold of Kathryn's arm and led the parents down a hallway. Entering a room on
the right, Kathryn and Chakotay could see two Doctors through the door window,
working feverishly over a bio bed.
"Your daughter is there, Captain, Commander, but it
will be awhile before we know anything."
Both Kathryn and Chakotay started forward, but the Nurse
said firmly, "No! Let the Doctors do their job. We'll keep you informed - go sit with your son," and
gestured to the back wall. Turning they
saw Adam sitting in silence and staring straight ahead, his face a stone mask.
Walking to him they sat on each side and Chakotay softly
asked, "What happened, Adam? Do you know?"
He nodded his head and in a wooden voice said, "I was
making a science presentation today and something went wrong and it blew
up. Katie had come to watch so I had
her holding it for me as I explained it to Professor Hill."
Both Kathryn and Chakotay took a sharp breath, and then both
put their arms around Adam's shoulders and waited.
An hour later Doctor Garcia entered the room and came
over. "We meet again. We've done all we can with your daughter and
now we just have to wait. She had burns
on her hands, arms and face, along with several bruises and lacerations, but
those were easily taken care of. The
serious injuries are internal. She has
a partially collapsed right lung, burning on the other lung, a broken rib and
some internal bleeding from a lacerated and bruised liver. Also there is a concussion from where she
apparently hit her head on the wall where the blast threw her. At the moment she is unconscious and we are
deepening that to a semi-coma state to facilitate healing."
"Bottom line, Doctor," said Kathryn her jaw set.
"The next twenty-four hours are very important to her
healing and we are going to transport her to IC." Then he gave a half smile. "If your daughter has half the
stubbornness you have Captain, she'll be fine. And I don't mean that in any derogatory sense, either."
Kathryn nodded as Chakotay tightened his arm around
her. "No offense taken
Doctor," she replied in a soft tone. Just then she saw the shimmering in the room and heard the soft buzz of
the Transporter. The Doctor also saw
this and immediately said "I'll walk with you to IC."
Adam, who had stood stiffly between his parents during this
conversation suddenly felt weak in the knees and grabbed onto Chakotay's
arm. The Doctor seeing this, made a
quick scan, called to the Nurse for a Hypo and injected Adam on the neck. Turning to Kathryn he smiled. "Nothing to be concerned about. His blood pressure dropped suddenly,
probably from the stress."
When they arrived at IC the Nurses had already transferred
Katie to a Bio Bed and were now running Medical TriCorder's over her body. As the parents and Adam walked up to the
bed, Kathryn was shocked at how fragile and pale Katie looked. One Nurse glanced up to Doctor Garcia. "No change in the readings Doctor. She handled the move very well."
Kathryn took hold of Katie's hand. "Show your stubbornness, Katie," she whispered. "Fight - fight hard young lady. We aren't going to lose you."
Kathryn, Chakotay and Adam stayed an hour before the Doctor
told them there wasn't anything they could do, as Katie would sleep the rest of
the night. He also assured them he
would arrange to transport them to the Hospital should there be any change,
thus relieving their fears of losing time trying to get there in their own
shuttle. Kathryn at first tried to argue but both Doctor Garcia and Chakotay
convinced her otherwise and she finally relented, agreeing to spend the night at
home.
Knowing they would stay a bit longer, Kathryn made a quick
call to B'Elanna who was home on Maternity Leave, explained the situation and
asked if she could pick up Jonathan and Maori from school, but not to say
anything about Katie, as she would explain everything to them when she and
Chakotay got home.
Both children were distressed to hear the news, but then
spent the rest of the evening supporting Adam, telling him it wasn't his fault.
Adam remained silent and just shook his head.
That night was a sleepless one for everyone in the Chakotay
household and the next morning after breakfast, which was a useless endeavor as
no one ate, they headed for the hospital. Arriving at Intensive Care they were horrified to see her bed empty.
Searching frantically for a Nurse finally brought the news
she had been transferred ten minutes ago to a private room, and they quickly
headed in that direction. Entering the
room they saw Katie was still unconscious, but Doctor Garcia was at her bedside
checking her condition.
Glancing up at the family he smiled. "Good morning. Katie has turned the corner and we are
starting the process of slowly bringing her out of the coma. Another hour or so and she should start to
wake up. She's a fighter,
Captain."
"Thank you Doctor," said Kathryn as a wave of
relief washed over her. "Is she
really going to be alright?"
"Yes, she will be fine. We have inflated the collapsed lung, the bleeding stopped during
the night, there are no signs of infection and the burned lung was treated
early this morning with excellent results." He then glanced down at Jonathan who was holding tightly to
Maori's hand. Kneeling, he placed one
hand on each of their shoulders and said, "Your sister is going to be like
new." Both children smiled and
said together, "Thank you Doctor." The Doctor then looked at Adam, patted him on the back, and said in a
tender tone, "She's going to be
just fine, Adam." He didn't respond and just stared at Katie.
For the next two hours the family sat at Katie's bedside,
Kathryn and Chakotay on one side and Adam, Jonathan and Maori on the
other. Adam had still not spoken since
telling his parents yesterday how the accident happened and both Kathryn and
Chakotay knew the anguish and guilt that was raging inside him.
He sat now staring at Katie, his eyes rarely blinking. Katie suddenly moved her head and with a
soft moan slowly opened her eyes and looked at her parents. She smiled and whispered, "I knew I
wasn't going to die. I could feel the
love from both of you holding me here." Turning her head to the other side of the bed she smiled at Maori and
Jonathan, but her eyes searched out Adam's face.
"Hi Adam," she said as she reached for his
hand. "I'm glad you're here. Don't
feel bad -I'm okay. I love you Adam."
"How can you say that!" he blurted out. "I almost killed you!" Then the
dam broke, the stony-face facade faded and Adam burst into uncontrollable
sobbing as he placed his head down on the side of the bed.
Katie placed her hand on top of his head and rubbed. "No Adam you can't feel that way. I'm okay, but I've got to tell you, in the
back of my mind I remember seeing a wire slip and touch the other wire . . .
the connector must have been loose. All
you have to do is put some shielding between the wires and strengthen the
connector. It's a great invention and
I'll help you with it."
"What?" said Adam in an incredulous tone.
"Katie you almost died because of me and that stupid invention. You can't be serious!"
"But I didn't die Adam. You're my brother and I love you. I don't want you to give up on that invention. It's a great idea."
"If anything happened to you I would never forgive
myself," said Adam and he wiped at the tears with both hands. Looking over at his parents, who couldn't
hide their emotions, nor pride at this family scene of love and caring, he
said, "I'm sorry Mom and Dad. I
was stupid. I guess I didn't check
everything and it almost cost my sister her life."
"It's a lesson for all of us, Adam," said Kathryn,
with Chakotay nodding agreement.
Maori, listening to all of this and seeing Katie lying so
still in that bed but Adam crying, leaned into Jonathan and whispered,
"What's happening? Why is Adam so upset?"
"I'll explain everything when we get home, Maori."
"Promise?"
"I promise. We'll go out to The Family and I'll tell you everything."
Maori, knowing she could trust her brother, nodded her head
and straightened up.
Chakotay and Kathryn, upon hearing this squeezed each
other's hand and looked at Katie and Adam, who now had small smiles on their
lips, as they too had witnessed Jonathan again taking care of his little
sister.
Three days later the Doctor said Katie was one hundred
percent and could go home. Adam had insisted he be the one to pick her up and
as Katie walked through the doors, she smiled a big smile. "Boy is it good to be in this
home," then hugged her parents, and Jonathan and Maori, who both had been
allowed to stay home from school to await their sister's return.
Two weeks after this incident, a communiqué arrived for Adam
from Starfleet, asking him to fill out a biography so they would be able to put
all his information into his Academy record and have it ready when he entered
the Academy next year, but Adam stubbornly refused to do that. When asked why by Katie he had strongly
proclaimed, "I am going to take the Starfleet Entrance Exam. I want to earn my way into the Academy, not
have it handed to me!"
Both Kathryn and Chakotay supported his decision and said
"That's very admirable of you Adam, and I'm sure you will make it without
any problem."
"Well," answered Adam with a grateful smile,
"The exam is in two months so that gives me some time to prepare, plus
I've been planning this and have been doing some work on the side."
Both Chakotay and Kathryn smiled, looked at one another and
in unison said, "Might have known."
The big day finally arrived and Chakotay took Adam to the
Academy, wished him luck then went home. It was an all day affair and knowing they wouldn't get a call until
evening, Kathryn and Chakotay engaged in their normal routine.
Eventually the call came, and after picking up Adam the
family went to Neelix' restaurant for dinner, then stopped by Tom and
B'Elanna's to visit. They knew it would be a week or so before Adam heard the
results, but that didn't stop the family from being ‘antsy' while they waited.
Finally the messenger arrived and as Adam nervously accepted
the Padd, his parents were almost having a stroke while they waited. Adam read the announcement, looked up at his
parents and back down to the Padd. The
tension in the room was almost unbearable and Jonathan was just about ready to
explode, when finally in a hushed voice Adam said, "I'm sorry to tell you
this Mom and Dad, but I didn't make it."
Chakotay started towards Adam saying "it was perfectly
alright," when Adam broke into a huge smile. "Just kidding! I finished
in the top ten percent!"
Bedlam erupted in the room for the next several minutes and
when things finally calmed down Katie placed her hands on her hips ala Captain
Janeway, and said, "Well thanks a lot Adam! Do you know what you just did?"
"What?" asked Adam, unable to contain his smile.
"You've just set a precedent. Now all the rest of us have to take that stupid exam," causing
everyone to break out in loud laughter.
"And you'll all fail," chided a laughing Adam.
After everyone calmed down Katie thought she'd better admit
she wasn't sure she was interested in Starfleet herself, but was immediately
assured by both parents it didn't matter, she could do whatever she wanted as
far as her schooling and avocation.
"And Dad," she added with a shy smile. "As far as the Tattoo and my
challenging the fact the women in your tribe didn't do it . . . ?"
"Yes?"
"Well I've decided not to have it, so you needn't worry
about your daughter breaking tradition," she said with a laugh, only to
receive a big hug from Chakotay and the words that he really wouldn't have
minded if she did.
"Now you tell me," she kidded.
However Jonathan, as he had the day they arrived on Earth,
declared emphatically he would be going to Starfleet and not only that, he
would also be a Captain of a Starship someday!
That night as Kathryn and Chakotay lay in bed, their pride
in Adam keeping them awake, Kathryn said, "I guess we did a pretty good job
of teaching on that planet, honey. All
our children are doing well and now Adam will be in the Academy next year. I just feel so proud of all of them."
"It was your teaching, sweetheart. They learned so much from you. Did you see Adam's score in the
Sciences?"
"He has an aptitude for science so I really didn't have
that much hand in it. Let's just say we
did a damn good job!" and they both broke out in loud laughter, causing
Adam to call out from his room, "Quiet in there, some of us want to get some
sleep!"
"Fat chance Adam," called out Katie. "You're as wide awake as the rest of
us!"
"Yeah," piped in Jonathan. "Why did you have to be so smart Adam -
now the rest of us have to study and be good students!"
"Well I don't know what all the fuss is about,"
said the small voice of Maori. "He
just passed a stupid test. I got an A
in my class today, too, but no one cheered for me."
"Three cheers for Maori," called out Adam and the
house reverberated with a raucous three ‘Hip-Hip Hooray's' for Maori, followed
by more laughter.
"That's better," said the small voice. "Now go to sleep everyone," and
then unable to restrain herself any longer she broke out into a fit of giggles,
causing everyone to again start laughing.
As the children finally settled down and drifted to sleep,
Kathryn and Chakotay made love, their pride in their children making for a
rather passionate night.
