The Jaimie Series - Part 1
Another Time
by Dee Price
Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay, deep in conversation, strolled slowly down the corridor on Deck eight, nodding to an occasional crewman who passed. Up ahead, two crewmen came around the corner towards them laughing loudly, nodded to both and went by. As Janeway and Chakotay neared the corner, another crewman stepped abruptly into the corridor, but this man had his phaser leveled straight at them.
"Hold it right there, Captain, Commander," he barked.
Janeway and Chakotay, a stunned expression on their faces, glanced quickly at one another and then the Captain placed both hands on her hips and her eyes became dark and hard.
"What is the meaning of this Ensign?" she snapped.
The reply came from behind them. "It means, Captain, you are both about to die."
Chakotay turned and saw the two crewmen who had previously passed them also had phasers pointing at them. The taller of the two sneered at Chakotay and glancing at his two comrades said, "Make sure your phasers are set to kill." Then looking again at the two officers said, "There's no bargaining. This will be fast. Goodbye Captain, Commander."
Out of nowhere a woman in an Ensign's uniform appeared and yelled to Janeway and Chakotay. "Get down!"
Chakotay grabbed Kathryn and threw her to the deck then landed on top of her, effectively shielding her with his body from whatever action was going to happen.
Even as Chakotay took this action the woman fired at the lone man, dropping him with one shot. The other two men turned towards her, their mouths open in astonishment. The woman, in an incredible display of athleticism and agility, immediately took two quick steps, leaped in the air and planted one foot on the wall just as one of the men fired at her. The woman gave a grunt as the phaser singed the back leg, but spun around on the planted foot, and while still virtually suspended in mid air, got off another shot, dropping a second man. As she landed, she dove headfirst, causing the remaining man's shot to miss badly, then executed a quick side roll and fired, dropping the last man beside Chakotay, who was still shielding the Captain.
Silence.
Then a soft groan, followed by, "Oh man, I'm getting too old for this."
Chakotay slowly lifted his head and seeing all three assailants down rose quickly, and then helped Kathryn to her feet.
The 'savior' moved to check the lone man, gave a quick glance at Janeway and Chakotay as she passed them and quietly asked, "You guys alright?"
Janeway, slightly stunned by this turn of events, nodded her head, but was clearly in an irritated state. "Who are you and what the hell just happened here?"
The woman continued to examine the victim, ignoring Janeway's question. In a few moments she gave an exasperated sigh and said, "Blast, I didn't mean to kill this one - that complicates things," then slowly rose and started for another man.
Again Janeway asked, "Who are you?"
"Lt. Jaimie Alexander, SI," was the short response.
Janeway's eyes widened in astonishment and she exploded, "Starfleet Intelligence on my ship!"
Chakotay, as startled as Janeway asked, "What is SI doing on this ship and how did you get here?"
"Simply stated," came the quiet reply, "Saving both your lives. Beyond that it's a long story." The woman then moved to examine the man lying at their feet.
"I have time, Lt.!" snarled Janeway.
The woman who called herself Jaimie glanced up, smirked, and with a sarcastic tone said, "60 years away from home . . . yeah, I guess you can say you have time, Kathryn."
Janeway's eyes became hard as steel and she said in almost a growl, "You will address me as Captain, and I'm still waiting for your explanation!"
Slowly Jaime stood up and in an exasperated tone said, "Oh alright, Kathryn. I just saved your life for heaven's sake. No need to be so bossy!" She then puffed her cheeks momentarily and then continued. "I'll make this as short as possible. SI learned that two spies had come aboard Voyager at DS9, with the express purpose of commandeering Voyager and turning it over to the Maquis." Turning her head slightly she added, "You had nothing to do with this, Chakotay."
He nodded, and looking at Kathryn said, "Definitely not! This is the first I've heard of it."
"Anyway," continued Jaimie, "I slipped on board Voyager just seconds before you left DS9 with the assignment of stopping them, but the little old Caretaker sorta spoiled their plans. However, I knew they would attempt something, sometime, so I . . . what you'd call 'blended into the woodwork' . . . and just kept my eyes and ears open."
"For four years?" asked a skeptical Janeway. "I know everyone on this ship and I don't recall seeing you before."
Jaimie ignored the comment and looking around at the three men, shook her head and sighed. "Two days ago I started to feel they were up to something so I stayed close by. Lucky for you two I did, but I've still got a big problem on my hands."
"Which is?" asked Janeway.
"Only one of these men is a suspect, Kathryn. That means he recruited these other two and I still have one to the other guy, and that's got to be quick. With this failure he might act immediately or try to hide. Either way, my assignment isn't over."
Janeway, still not certain about any of this, looked around her and then tapped her Com badge. "Security, I need a detail up here on Deck 8, Section 22 to take away some bodies."
"Bodies, Captain?"
"Just do it. Janeway barked. Out."
Immediately Jaimie held her hand up. "Whoa Kathryn. You realize that I can't be seen here or mentioned in your log, don't you? "
Janeway frowned, but nodded, knowing SI was a covert agency. "Understood," she said.
Jaimie smiled for the first time, giving her a rather pleasant look, then looked at Chakotay. "Catch, Chakotay!" and flipped her phaser to him. "This means you're the big hero, you just saved Kathryn's life!" and she started walking toward the corner junction chortling gleefully.
"Wait a minute," said Janeway. "I haven't finished with you yet!"
Jaimie just gave a wave of her hand and disappeared around the corner.
Turning to Chakotay, Kathryn gave him an exasperated look. "Something's not right. I can feel it in my bones."
Chakotay stood with his hands on his hips surveying the scene around them. "Well, she did save our lives, Kathryn."
At this point Tuvok hurriedly came around the corner and asked, "Is everything alright here, Captain?"
"Tuvok, call that Ensign back here immediately!"
Tuvok stopped and looked back along the corridor. "What Ensign, Captain? There is no one there."
"That Ensign that just went around the corner," Janeway sputtered.
With a puzzled look and a deep frown on his face, Tuvok again said, "I repeat Captain, there is no one there." He then glanced at the three dead men, raised an eyebrow and asked, "May I inquire as to what happened here?"
Janeway glanced at Chakotay. "It's a long story Mr. Tuvok, I'll explain later. Right now the Commander and I have to sort things out."
Tuvok looked at the phaser in Chakotay's hand and said, "I assume you are responsible for this Commander. You realize I will need a full report."
Startled, as he had completely forgotten he was holding the phaser, Chakotay looked down, then over at Kathryn, then to Tuvok. "In due time Mr. Tuvok." With that he handed him the phaser and he and the Captain turned and headed for the turbolift.
Tuvok, watched them, raised his eyebrow and in typical Vulcan fashion said, "Interesting."
* * *
Back in her Ready Room, Janeway relentlessly paced the room. Chakotay sat quietly on the couch, knowing Kathryn's mind was racing with the events that had just transpired. Suddenly she stopped in front of him.
"Let's summarize Chakotay . . . we are jumped by three men all with phasers leveled at us. Suddenly this Jaimie appears, puts them all down, says it's a plot, says she's SI, goes around the corner and Tuvok, coming from that same corridor, doesn't see her. Is that how you remember it?"
Chakotay nods, but before he can say anything Janeway continues. "How did she suddenly appear and then disappear? If she really is SI then she must have some sort of cloaking device, and if she has a cloaking device why doesn't Starfleet have it on their ships? And another thing, how could she not be seen or questioned in over four years? That's impossible!"
"Those are all legitimate questions Kathryn, but she did save us, that fact remains."
"But there is something not right with her story . . . something we're missing. I'm convinced she has a cloaking device! And who is she really?"
Just then a voice from across the room said, "I always knew you were a smart woman, Kathryn."
Janeway and Chakotay both turned and looked in the direction of the voice, but saw no one. Suddenly Jaimie appeared, sitting in a relaxed position at Janeway's desk. "And I assure you I am Lt. Jaimie Alexander, SI," then paused a beat before adding "of the 29th Century."
Again she paused, letting Janeway and Chakotay register their astonishment at this news. They stared at her, mouths agape as she walked over to them. "You see, Kathryn, I'm a Time Traveler and it's my job to keep all the time lines from changing. Those men were going to kill you both and that would have changed everything - and I do mean EVERYTHING. You have no idea what that would have . . ." She hesitated and looked out the port window, seemingly lost in thought. Shaking her head she looked back at them and continued, "Anyway I had to stop them."
Jaimie looked out the window again, then down at her hands. It was obvious something was troubling her. "It's the first time I've had to kill anyone," she said with a quick smile. "Usually I just use a heavy stun, but they left me no choice. They were going to kill you, and I had to stop them." On the last few words her voice got husky.
Kathryn, seeing a soft side to this brazen woman, suddenly softened her stance toward Jaimie as she realized how that act was affecting her. "You did what you had to do, Lt."
"Maybe, but I only caught one," Jaimie replied. "I don't have a clue why those other two poor souls got involved, but I still have one man I have to find, and until I do you two are still in danger."
Janeway raised her hands in an exasperated fashion. "But why did they want to kill us, what would that have accomplished and why now . . . we're still in the Delta Quadrant, 60 years from home. It doesn't make sense."
Jaimie simply shrugged her shoulders and said with a smirk, "I don't know, Kathryn. Maybe they just got tired of all the stops you were making."
Chakotay ducked his head at that remark, but not before he saw Janeway's body stiffening. Placing her hands on her hips Kathryn retorted, "Lt. I would appreciate it if you would address me with the respect I deserve. I insist you call me Captain!"
Jaimie snorted and in an insolent tone and a wave of her hand said, "Oh I don't think so, Kathryn. After all I'm not only SI, but from the 29th Century, so you have no power, not to mention jurisdiction over me. Besides I respect the person not the title. It's you who are running this ship Kathryn, not the title of Captain, and I respect you." Then her voice took on an irritated tone.
"I just don't cotton to this title crap or Starfleet Protocol, even though I've been in Starfleet since I was twelve." She laughed then and threw her hands up in the air. "Good heavens, do you realize I've been in Starfleet for 58 years! No wonder I feel old sometimes - I am! Anyway, Kathryn, I respect the person and I respect you for the job you are doing. I don't even call my own Captain, Captain. Never have - never will. And everyone calls me Jaimie, even the Admiral. Heck, I call everyone by his or her first names . . . even the Admiral. They all know I don't stand on formality." Then she gave Kathryn a shy smile.
"Besides, I like you Kathryn, and I always call people I like by their first name!"
Janeway spluttered in indignation. "I worked hard to become Captain and I expect you to call me Captain!"
"Ah come off it, Kathryn. Don't be such a stuffed shirt."
Chakotay quickly bent his head down and placed his hand over his mouth to hide his grin. He should have stepped in stopped her sarcastic comments to Kathryn, but he found himself enjoying this woman and her retorts. It certainly wouldn't be in his best interests for the Captain to see that.
Jaimie then continued. "What we have to remember, Kathryn, is that there is still one man intent on doing you two bodily harm, and it's my job to prevent that. I can't go home until I do, so if you two will excuse me I have work to do." With that she disappeared even as Janeway was saying, "Wait a minute! Come back here, Lt!"
Just then Janeway's door chimed. "Enter," she called out in irritation.
Tuvok strode in to report they were coming up on an M class planet that appeared to be highly developed.
Janeway glanced at Chakotay. "Do you suppose they knew that somehow?"
Chakotay merely shrugged.
Tuvok's brows went into a deep frown as he asked, "They? Are you referring to the dead men and knew what, Captain?"
Kathryn turned and walked to the view port. "Yes, those men who tried to kill us . . . they yelled something about going home before all the firing started."
Chakotay quickly looked down at the floor to keep Tuvok from seeing his eyes. 'That was good,' he mused to himself.
Tuvok replied that he didn't know how those men could have known they were coming up on a planet as the long-range sensors just detected it moments ago.
"Thank you, Tuvok, the Commander and I will be on the Bridge shortly."
Taking that as dismissal, Tuvok turned and left the room, but not before giving a puzzled expression in Chakotay's direction.
As soon as the doors hissed shut, Janeway's bottled up exasperation exploded. "The nerve of that woman! Her sassy, cheeky, disrespectful attitude! No wonder Starfleet doesn't get along with SI, they all seem to have this 'Holier than thou' attitude. I just can't believe she talked to me that way!" Janeway then looked at him. "And don't think I didn't see your smirk, Chakotay."
Chakotay's face flushed momentarily, then he smiled and in that quiet, calming voice of his said, "She was rather cheeky, but despite everything, you know what Kathryn? I can't explain it, but I like her." He paused a beat as Kathryn looked at him, and then with a smile added, "And I think you like her, too."
Kathryn's mouth dropped open and she gave every indication she was going to give an explosive denial, then hesitated, threw her hands up in the air in a hopeless gesture and looked momentarily out the window.
Unexpectedly she smiled. "Yes," she said almost to herself, "I do find myself liking her. Why, Chakotay? She's rude and disrespectful, yet somehow refreshingly honest. Why, with her tone, do I feel something for her?"
Jaimie was now in her ship, which was cloaked and attached to Voyager's hull. As she ran her fingers over the control panel, she glanced at her screen showing Kathryn and Chakotay, and smiled upon hearing the last few words.
* * *
Jaimie continued working her controls then suddenly sat upright. "Aha! I found you, you rascal." She hurriedly clicked some keys on her panel and then saw the remaining target. He was walking nonchalantly down the corridor leading to the Transporter Room.
"Smart man," Jaimie mused, "Taking time, not looking hurried or desperate." She considered possible action. Should she alert Kathryn to stop all transports to this planet? No . . . it will actually be better if he leaves the ship, so she crossed her arms over her chest and sat back in her chair, alertly watching as he entered the Transporter Room.
The Ensign working the panel glanced up as he entered and smiled as if she knew him. They stood conversing for a while and presently the Ensign departed the room, leaving the man alone. Jaimie jumped to her feet, punched a button on the small control panel on a belt around her waist and disappeared.
Outside the Transporter Room, Jaimie still cloaked, waited a brief second, then activated the door and quickly stepped through . . . just in time to see the man dematerialize.
"Blast!" she growled. "Timed that wrong you idiot." Running to the transporter she noted the coordinates, tapped a button on her belt and disappeared.

In the Ready Room, Janeway and Chakotay were now going over their report of the incident when Harry Kim hailed the Captain.
"Janeway here, what is it Mr. Kim?"
"Captain, someone just beamed off the ship!"
Just then Jaimie appeared in the room and desperately waved her hand at Kathryn and said quietly, "Just tell him it's ok."
Instead, Janeway asked "Do you know who it was Harry?"
Jaimie rolled her eyes and throwing her hands up turned to Chakotay with a 'what's the use' expression on her face.
"Ensign Kauffman, Captain."
"No one was authorized to go down to that planet. Get him back Mr. Kim."
"I'm trying, Captain, but it's too late."
"All right, Harry. See if you can pinpoint his whereabouts and keep track of him. Janeway out."
As Kathryn turned to her, Jaimie in an exasperated tone, while raising a hand and pointing a finger at her, growled, "You are so stubborn, Kathryn! I told you it was all right, but do you listen? No!"
Kathryn fired right back with, "I'm running this ship and I will do what I think best! Now explain what you mean by it's all right, Lt.?"
Jaimie quickly explained that it was actually better that he was off the ship . . . harder for her to track him, but safer for she and Chakotay. Suddenly she gave Kathryn a strange look and asked, "What planet is this?"
"I don't know. We haven't made contact as yet."
Jaimie's face suddenly registered alarm. "Kathryn, you can't stop here! Keep going to the next planet . . . it's only two days away at Impulse."
"Why shouldn't we stop here Lt., and how would you know about the next planet?"
Feeling it was a stupid question she exclaimed, "How would I know? For crying out loud, Kathryn, I'm 29th Century remember, and besides Voyager is required study during the second and third years at the Academy."
This last remark stunned both Chakotay and Janeway and Chakotay quickly asked, "Voyager is required study? Why? What do we do, Jaimie?"
Before Jaimie could respond an excited gleam came into Kathryn's eyes. "We get back to the Alpha Quadrant, don't we?"
Jaimie looked at them, her expression clearly saying, "Oh, Oh I slipped", but quickly and in an insolent, dismissal tone, said, "I didn't say that!"
"Then why are we required study if we don't get back?" Kathryn persisted.
"Kathryn, you know there are hundreds of ways . . . you're a derelict ship found floating in space, maybe for a hundred years; Starfleet finds a worm hole to the Delta Quadrant and comes upon your dead ship; you don't make it back and Starfleet uses you as an example of 'what went wrong'; aliens or traders with advanced technology find Voyager, go aboard, take all your logs and computer records and eventually turn them over to
Starfleet; Voyager eventually makes it back but with a whole new crew because all of you died years ago . . . should I go on?"
Kathryn still could not contain her excitement and replied with a wave of her hand. "I know all about those possibilities, Lt."
"Please call me Jaimie. I hate being addressed as Lt."
Janeway smirked and in a deliberate tone said, "What is the name of this planet you so desperately don't want us to stop at . . . Lt."
Jaimie grimaced, knowing Kathryn would now keep calling her Lt., and replied "It's called Kolin, but if you go down the road apiece you'll find her sister planet Koban, a nice peaceful place. Kolin doesn't like strangers at all. Also Koban has more of the minerals and supplies you need."
"Did we stop here on our journey, Lt?"
"Yes, but I assure you Koban is a more pleasant place."
"If we stopped at Kolin originally, but don't stop now, aren't we changing the timeline?"
Jaimie whirled and looked at Chakotay. "Is she always this stubborn? No wait, don't answer that – I already know!"
Turning back to Kathryn, Jaimie frowned. "Yes, but . . . oh all right, stop here but don't go down to the surface." She hesitated as if trying to recall something then slapped her forehead with an open palm. "Yes, yes, that's it. I remember now, just stop here, but go on to Koban. That's what you did before."
Still Kathryn persisted. "Are you sure Lt or are you altering your own facts?"
"I know your history Kathryn!"
Janeway nodded. "All right. Just being sure."
Chakotay who had been sitting quietly watching this exchange muttered, "Well, I think that round was a draw."
Both Janeway and Jaimie turned to him and said simultaneously, "What?"
Chakotay waved his hand and said, "Never mind. I was just talking to myself." He was saved further embarrassment when Tuvok interrupted from the Bridge, "Captain, we are being hailed from the planet."
"On our way Mr. Tuvok." Then looking at Chakotay said, "Leave your smirk and your mutterings here Chakotay." Then glancing at Jaimie said, "And you stay here."
Chakotay looked at Jaimie and saw her trying to cover her laugh with her open hand. "You're getting me in trouble, Jaimie."
Jaimie smirked and the minute Janeway and Chakotay turned and started through the doors to the Bridge, she initiated her cloak and followed.
A very stern looking man appeared on the view screen. Janeway put on her best smile and said, "Mr. Prime Minister, I am Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager . . ."
The Prime Minister interrupted. "Captain Janeway, it is nice to meet you, but I must ask what you are doing in our space? I'm afraid you will have to leave immediately, we do not take kindly to nor allow visitors."
Janeway again smiled and replied, "We are just passing through on our way home. If you do not wish us to stop, of course we will defer to your wishes, but we do have one problem. One of my crewmen beamed down to your planet a few moments ago and we are trying to locate him to bring him back. It was completely unauthorized I assure you."
The Prime Minister in an anguished voice cried out, "No! That is a terrible violation of our laws, Captain. You must find him and get him back immediately or he will be placed in detention!"
"I assure you Prime Minister we are working on it."
"Get him back immediately and I insist you leave the minute you have him returned on board your ship." And with that the screen went black.
Janeway arched an eyebrow as she looked at Chakotay, who had moved up beside her during this exchange, and whispered, "No wonder she didn't want us to stop here."
Turning to Harry, she asked, "Have you succeeded in locating Ensign Kauffman yet?"
"No, Captain, he must have taken off his badge."
Janeway then tapped her Com badge. "Bridge to Engineering."
"B'Elanna here, Captain."
"B'Elanna, what was that technique you used to locate Chakotay a while back?"
"Bone scan info, Captain, why has something happened to Chakotay?"
"No B'Elanna, we've lost Ensign Kauffman. It seems he beamed down to the planet."
"Oh, I wondered why he didn't show up for work this morning. We're rather shorthanded."
"Understood. Janeway out."
Janeway then turned to Harry. "Harry, get all the info you need on Kauffman and conduct that search." Then looking at Chakotay she nodded her head as she said, "Tuvok, you have the Bridge," and headed for her Ready Room with Chakotay right behind her.
As the doors swished shut they heard a bump followed by "Oooof!" Jaimie then materialized holding the side of her head. "You've got to walk faster Chakotay. That darn door almost cut me in half!"
Despite herself, Janeway laughed, then regaining control said, "Serves you right Lt. I told you to stay here." Jaimie simply rolled her eyes. Kathryn turned to Chakotay. "We have a real problem here, and have to find Ensign Kauffman fast."
Turning to Jaimie she asked, "What did the Prime Minister mean by detention?"
Jaimie, who was still rubbing her head said, "It's like a hospital in a way. They try to treat you and end any violent tendencies you might have. I'll go down to the planet, Kathryn. I can blend in and with my cloaking availability hide if necessary. I certainly have a better chance than any of you. They just don't ask questions - of any kind - when they find a stranger. You go immediately to detention. Besides, I'm still after him, remember?"
Kathryn snorted. "Need I remind you, Lt., he is a member of this crew and my responsibility! If you find him I want your assurance you will bring him back here so we can deal with him ourselves."
"What are you going to do, Kathryn, put him in the brig?"
"Yes, if he's found guilty, but we have to find him first."
At that Jaimie exploded. "That's stupid, Kathryn! You're going to put him in the brig, guard him and feed him for 60 years? That sounds as dumb to me as it must to you. You need your manpower and rations for better things than that!"
Before Janeway could respond Tuvok called from the Bridge. "Captain, the Prime Minister has hailed us and is quite upset. It seems our Ensign Kauffman has killed one of the natives and the Prime Minister now has the entire population of the city looking for him!"
Janeway rolled her eyes in exasperation. "We're doing our best, Tuvok. Make sure you emphasize to him that this is our No. 1 priority. Keep me posted." And with that Janeway sat heavily onto her chair.
Jaimie then repeated she would go down to the planet and do what she could to find Ensign Kauffman first.
"If you go down I want Chakotay to go with you," Janeway said wearily.
"You don't trust me, Kathryn?"
"I don't trust the difference between your Starfleet and mine. I want him to go with you and that final!"
Jaimie walked over to Kathryn's desk, placed her palms down and bent towards Janeway. "I don't give a rat's ass what you want Kathryn," she hissed, "and to insist Chakotay go down to the planet with me is stupid. If you weren't so stubborn and have such a rigid Starfleet attitude, you'd admit I'm right. Now just let me do my job!"
With that Kathryn slowly started to stand up, eventually stretching to her full and rigid height. Just as slowly Jaimie raised her head as her eyes watched Kathryn stand, then turned to look at Chakotay whose eyes betrayed his alarm at this exchange, and said, "Woof - she gets tall when she gets angry doesn't she?"
Jaimie then stepped back from the desk, knowing she had to mollify Kathryn, and holding both hands palm up said, "Okay, Kathryn, I apologize, I shouldn't have spoken to you like that. But it is a bad decision for Chakotay to go with me. Kathryn, I may be 70 years old, but I'm good at my job. In fact I'm the best or they wouldn't still be having me do these things." Then Jaimie smiled, "Granted, I'm cheeky, sassy, disrespectful and rude . . ."
Kathryn blushed at this, realizing Jaimie had heard her earlier comments, but Jaimie continued on as if she didn't notice. ". . . But what you see is what you get. I call things the way I see them, I'm outspoken, but I speak the truth. I respect people, not titles.
Chakotay will stand out on that planet; he will get caught and be put in detention. I know you don't want that, Kathryn. Besides, I can work faster by myself, so please, let me do my job."
Janeway's face had softened at the apologetic tone in Jaimie's voice, hearing it as heartfelt and sincere. Sitting back down she glanced at Chakotay.
"No, I don't want Chakotay put in jeopardy. Will you promise me you will bring Ensign Kauffman back to this ship?"
Jaimie, realizing she had pushed Kathryn as far as she dare, gave in. "Okay, if I get to him first I'll bring him back here." Then giving Kathryn a half smile, said, "But I still think it's a bad decision."
With that she started to reach for her belt, but Kathryn suddenly put her hand up.
"Jaimie, do you have another cloaking belt that Chakotay could wear? That way he . . ." She stopped and looked at Jaimie and Chakotay who were both standing there smiling.
"What are you two smiling about?"
Chakotay hesitated, looked at Jaimie and finally replied. "Do you realize you just called her Jaimie instead of Lt.?"
"I did not - did I?" Then shaking her head she laughed. "I guess you're getting to me. All right, do it your way."
"Now this is the Kathryn I know and love," beamed Jaimie. "See ya in a few," and promptly disappeared from view.
Janeway and Chakotay smiled at one another. Kathryn clapped her hand on Chakotay's shoulder as they turned to head for the bridge and said "What was it I told Harry once, 'weird is part of the job'."
* * *
Jaimie wandered around the city, unseen in her cloaked attitude, eyes and ears alert to everything done and said. Trouble was everyone acted suspicious, as the whole city appeared to be on the alert. Occasionally she took a reading from a Tri-Corder on her wrist, but was unable to pinpoint Kauffman or any disturbance as yet. Soon she spotted a group of people talking animatedly and merged into the back of the gathering. One of the natives was saying ". . . and they think they have him cornered in the SW quadrant of the city."
Jaimie immediately hurried in that direction, bumping into a small gentleman in her haste. If she hadn't been in such a hurry she would have immensely enjoyed his confusion, as he twisted and turned in every direction trying to determine what had bumped him.
Arriving at the quadrant, she quickly spotted a dwelling that was surrounded. If she could find a way in, it would be a simple matter to transport Ensign Kauffman back to Voyager, but all the doors and windows seemed closed. She continued her tour and finally spotted an open window on the third floor. Trouble was the crowd had seen it too. At that moment a native came running around the corner of the house and gestured wildly. Soon more natives came around the corner carrying a wooden object. Confused, Jaimie studied it - then it dawned on her. 'Oh yeah' she mused to herself, 'back in 20th Century Earth that had these wooden sticks with crossbars on them and called it a ladder.'
Placing the ladder against the wall, one native cautiously started up. Jaimie ran over and pulled the next man off the first step, then started up the ladder as the man, after regaining his balance, proceeded to argue with the man behind him – accusing him of pulling him off the ladder. She followed the first man through the window, silently complaining about how slow he was. Once inside Jaimie checked her Tri-Corder. Yes! There was body heat coming from a back room. Moving silently she entered the room and saw Ensign Kauffman sitting in a corner with his phaser leveled at the doorway. He was wounded as she noted blood slowly trickling down his forehead.
Jaimie moved quickly towards him and then stopped. She could not talk to him, as he would make enough noise to draw attention. Well, that left only one alternative. Looking down at her belt she quickly pre-set the coordinates for Voyager's Transporter Room, and stepped next to him.
Ensign Kauffman immediately sensed something and started looking wildly about. Like a flash, Jaimie reached out and delivered the Vulcan neck pinch, which immediately rendered Kauffman unconscious. "Thank you, Mr. Spock" she muttered softly, then placed both her hands under Kauffman's arms and with a stifled groan pulled him up enough to let him fall over her shoulder, punched her belt and disappeared just as a native walked in the room.
In Voyager's Transporter Room, a very startled Ensign suddenly sees Ensign Kauffman appear hanging in mid-air. With a groan Jaimie let Kauffman slide off her shoulder to the floor
"Man, you are really heavy or I'm getting weak." Forgetting that she was still cloaked Jaimie barked to the Ensign, "Quickly Ensign, transport this man to the Brig!"
The Ensign's eyes widened and she tapped her Com badge.
"Uhm . . . Captaaainnn?"
Janeway, sitting at her desk going over reports replied in a detached voice, "Yes, what is it?"
The voice over the Com, sounding obviously confused, said "A man just appeared in the Transporter Room suspended in mid-air and then some voice told me to transport him to the Brig."
This reply brought a smile to both Janeway and Chakotay's lips, but before she could reply she heard Jaimie's voice say, "Ensign, I told you to get this man to the Brig. Now do it immediately or I will shove you out an airlock!"
The Ensign gave an audible gasp, so Janeway quickly said, "It's all right, Ensign. Transport the gentleman to the Brig, and Ensign . . ."
"Yes ma'am?"
"You are not to say a word of this to anyone, do you understand?"
"Yes ma'am," and then the hum of the Transporter was heard.
As Kathryn stood to head for the Brig she heard "Boo!" over the still open Com line, followed by a startled scream, then laughter. Having had her fun, Jaimie, realizing she could not uncloak, headed out the door. As the doors slip open and shut without anyone visible, the Ensign started shaking and said, "Oh dear, straaange things are happening here, Captain."
Kathryn shook her head and looked at Chakotay, who was thoroughly enjoying this byplay. "It's really all right, Ensign, and remember not a word to anyone. Janeway out." She then wagged a finger at Chakotay and said as she headed for the door, "Remind me to lecture you on proper decorum, Chakotay!"
"But it was funny, Kathryn. Don't you have any imagination on what that must have looked like?"
Kathryn, now out of the room and away from Chakotay's eyes and ears, said quietly, "I certainly do, Chakotay, I certainly do." Then she broke into a big laugh as she headed for the turbolift.

Once out in the Corridor, Jaimie searched her memory for the Brig coordinates. At last she punched in the numbers and seconds later was standing in the security room watching Kauffman being checked by the Doctor. Janeway walked in and asked, "How is he, Dr?"
"Perfectly okay, just unconscious. The head wound is merely a scratch."
"Thank you Dr., you may return to Sickbay."
Janeway, after nodding to the Security Guard to put up the force field to Ensign Kauffman's cell, stood with her hands on her hips studying the man whose intent had been to kill herself and Chakotay. Suddenly she noticed his pips showed he was Starfleet, not Maquis. Why had she assumed he was Maquis - simply because he was going to turn Voyager over to the Maquis?
Then she heard a whisper at her side. "Yeah, I noticed the pips, too, Kathryn, but it doesn't change anything - he's still a traitor."
"What did you do to him, Jaimie?" Kathryn whispered.
"Just the Vulcan neck pinch. He'll be awake in a few more minutes."
"We need to talk privately," Janeway said and then turned to the guard. "Keep a close watch on this man," and then turned and headed out the door.
"Where to, Kathryn?"
"My Ready Room. Seems I've just about lived there the last few days."
Janeway felt a hand on her arm and then she was standing in her Ready Room. Jaimie uncloaked and smiled at Kathryn's astonishment. "A little faster that way."
"I felt absolutely nothing except your hand on my arm. That is marvelous technology."
Jaimie just nodded and walked to the view port. Janeway walked over beside her and asked, "Did you have any trouble capturing Ensign Kauffman?"
"Not really, he was cornered by a group of citizens in a house and I just got to him before they did." She then turned and looked Kathryn in the eyes. "He may be Starfleet, and maybe you can somehow justify to yourself the guarding and feeding him for 60 years, but the fact remains he killed a person down on that planet and they have the right . . . no, they should have jurisdiction in this matter." Besides . . ."
Janeway held up her hand and tapped her Com badge. "We are not going to continue this argument, Jaimie. Commander Chakotay, will you please report to my Ready Room?"
"On my way," came the reply.
Seconds later Chakotay walked in. Janeway turned to him and said, "We have Ensign Kauffman in the Brig and it turns out he's Starfleet, not Maquis, so if you were concerned in any way, your mind can rest easy on that issue."
Chakotay's expression remained the same, not revealing any reaction, and Jaimie silently marveled at this. Then Kathryn continued as she turned to Jaimie. "However, that is unimportant. What is important is that he is a member of this crew and we will not give him up to be executed by some alien planet."
Jaimie turned from the view port and glanced first at Chakotay, then Kathryn. In a voice barely audible, she said "Dumb."
Kathryn heard it and her reply, although almost a whisper had a very hard edge to it.
"It may be dumb to you, but we WILL handle this matter."
Jaimie turned away from Kathryn and again stared out the view port. "Your supplies are low, your manpower dwindles every time you are in a battle, yet you persist in saying you are going to guard and feed him for 60 years, simply because he is Starfleet. That is unbelievably stubborn, Kathryn," she said, her voice still extremely soft.
Kathryn's eyes blazed in anger. She was not used to someone continually calling her stubborn and questioning her decisions. "I will not have an alien planet execute one of my crew members regardless of the crime," she spat in a voice dripping with venom.
Jaimie, giving a huge sigh, glanced at Chakotay, looked down at the floor for a few moments, and then again stared out the view port. It was obvious she was having an internal battle of some kind.
Chakotay, watching her intently, suddenly sensed something and moved quickly to her side. Placing a hand gently on her left shoulder he asked, "What is it, Jaimie?"
Jaimie looked up into those soft brown eyes. With his Vision Quest abilities, did he see - she quickly brushed those thoughts from her mind and looked down. Kathryn, sensing something had passed between them moved up on Jaimie's other side.
"Have I missed something, Jaimie?"
Jaimie glanced at he, chiding herself as she did so to keep her mind focused, then gave a sharp shake of her head and abruptly sat down on the couch, with Chakotay and Kathryn following suit.
A few moments of silence, then Jaimie sighed. "Have you checked to see what the laws are on this planet, Kathryn?"
"No, not yet. I really haven't had the time."
Jaimie gave her a half smile. "You seem fixated on the word execution. I submit to you that you check it out, because this planet does not and has not in 2,000 years executed a prisoner, even though it might have involved murder."
Chakotay's eyes flared with a ray of hope. "What do they do?"
"They are placed in a detention center where they are examined and treated to correct the problem."
"You mean brainwashed," said Janeway in a statement rather than a question.
"No, not brainwashed. They don't even know what that term means."
"How do you know this?" Chakotay pressed.
"I spent a month on this planet once, just observing and learning, because we too thought they must use some type of brainwashing. But they don't. They school them and the prisoner rises from one level of treatment to another until it is felt they can rejoin society."
Again Chakotay pressed, "How long does this treatment as you call it usually last?"
"It depends on the person. It can go from a few months to a few years, even up to ten years. At least that's how long one man had been here when I was observing. I rather suspect he is still in detention. He appeared incorrigible."
Chakotay turned and looked at Kathryn, who had been listening intently to this conversation. She rose and walked across the room, hesitated and then started pacing. Jaimie started to say something but Chakotay held up his hand and shook his head no, and they both sat silently and watched.
Suddenly Tuvok called the Captain, and informed her the Prime Minister was hailing her.
Striding onto the Bridge she called out "On screen."
A very stern looking Prime Minister appeared, and upon seeing Janeway said, "Ah, Captain, it is my understanding or belief that you have captured and returned Ensign Kauffman to your ship."
Although wondering how he had discovered that information she replied, "That's right Prime Minister. He's currently in our Brig."
"Brig? I don't understand."
"We are holding him in a guarded room."
The Prime Minister nodded. "Well I must protest Captain. Do you not agree that as he killed one of our citizens we should have the right to handle this matter?"
"He is a member of the Starfleet Federation and a member of this crew. As such, I assure you Prime Minister we will handle this ourselves. We do not condone murder under any circumstances."
The Prime Minister winced and exclaimed, "Surely you do not intend to kill him? That is inhumane, Captain!"
As that statement seemed to coincide with what Jaimie had stated earlier, Janeway hesitated in her response. The Prime Minister then hurriedly said, "Again, Captain, I request that we be given the right to handle this matter. One of our citizens is dead because of your Ensign Kauffman. For you to say you will handle this and leave our space does not guarantee to our citizens that justice has been done. Also we warned you not to come to our space."
Janeway held her hand up. "Let me get back to you on this. I need to discuss this matter further with Commander Chakotay."
"Do not attempt to leave, Captain."
Janeway's eyes narrowed. "Is that a threat, Mr. Prime Minister? Because I assure you we do not take kindly to threats."
"If it had been a threat, Captain, you ship would be surrounded by our fleet. It was a request."
Janeway nodded. "Very well. As I said before, I'll get back to you on this."
Once back in her Ready Room, Janeway started once again to pace, with Chakotay still sitting and silently watching. Jaimie finally started to whisper to Chakotay, "You have the patience of Job, but she's going to wear a . . ." but Chakotay merely nodded, and continued his focus on Kathryn. Jaimie acquiesced and leaned back.
At last Chakotay sensed a difference in Janeway's movements. Turning to Jaimie, he asked, "Can we go down to the planet and observe this treatment?"
An agonized look crossed Jaimie's face; she hesitated, and then shook her head no.
"But you said you spent a month here," Janeway interjected.
"Sure, but I was cloaked the whole time. Besides they don't take kindly to strangers as I've already mentioned and I'm sure if you even make an official request you will be turned down."
Then, Jaimie seemingly made a decision, stood and smiled at Kathryn. "There is one thing I can do, however. And as I'm in deep trouble already, and it wont change the timeline, can you and Chakotay arrange for about three hours without any interruptions from the crew?"
Chakotay looked at Kathryn as she mulled this request over. Finally Janeway said, "I suppose we can arrange it, why?"
"Well let's see, it's ten hundred hours right now," said Jaimie who then did some mental calculations. "Get the Prime Minister back, tell him you will give him a decision at twelve hundred hours tomorrow, and then make your arrangements." With that she disappeared.
Janeway threw Chakotay an exasperated look as she turned for the door and said, "What is that woman up to now? She is driving me crazy!"
Chakotay just smiled and silently followed her out the door.
* * *
Janeway strode onto the Bridge. "Mr. Kim, contact the Prime Minister," then stood waiting impatiently drumming her fingers on her hip. When he finally appeared on screen Janeway informed him she was going into conference and promised him a decision 'one way or another' at 1200 hours tomorrow. "But I would like to ask you a question, Mr. Prime Minister - is it possible for my First Officer and myself to transport down to your planet to find out . . ."
"No! Definitely not Captain," thundered the Prime Minister. "No one may transport to our planet for any reason!"
"With all due respect we would merely like to . . ."
"The answer is no Captain. I do not like repeating myself!" With that the view screen went black.
Janeway turned to find Tuvok with his eyebrow raised, Harry with a shocked look on his face, and Tom and Chakotay with smirks on their faces. "What ever happened to diplomacy in this quadrant?" she muttered. "Commander," she said in a weary tone, "Once again, my Ready Room."
Before leaving the Bridge, she informed Tuvok quite emphatically she was not to be disturbed for any reason, that he was in charge and to handle all matters that occurred as he saw fit. Tuvok, as he was prone to do, raised his eyebrow and stared straight into the Captain's eyes for a moment, then nodded his head and said, "Understood."
Striding into her Ready Room, Janeway held her head and muttered about all this giving her a headache. Jaimie was now back and sitting at Janeway's desk and tapping at the console.
"What are you doing now and who said you could use my console?" she barked in an angry tone.
"Patience, dear Kathryn," Jaimie scolded. "I'm just transferring your Com code into a patch I can insert into my belt. That way you can be kept up with any problems that might occur and know if Tuvok has decided he must contact you."
Janeway grimaced and shot Chakotay a 'what's the use' look. "What are we going to do?"
Jaimie stood up and produced two belts. "Ok, all set," then proceeded to put one on Janeway, mused it will be a tight fit for Chakotay and announced they were going to visit the planet. As she worked on attaching Chakotay's she noticed Kathryn was intently studying the belt. "Won't do you any good, Kathryn."
Startled, Kathryn looked up as a red tinge flushed her face. Jaime grinned then proceeded to inform them that while on the planet they were not to touch anything, not to touch the belt, and above all, don't say a word."
"But don't we have to operate the belt?" Kathryn asked with a sly smile on her face.
Amused at the way Kathryn was trying to glean information about the belt, Jaimie broke into a big smile. "No, I have synchronized both belts to my panel. When I operate my belt it will also initiate your belts simultaneously. Pretty darn clever, this 29th Century technology, eh what?"
Chakotay flashed a smile at Kathryn and said "Nice try."
With a last look at their belts, Jaimie stepped between them, had them link their arms with hers, punched a button and all three disappeared.
In the blink of an eye Janeway and Chakotay found themselves in a large, white room where two people sat involved in deep conversation. Obviously patient and Doctor, Kathryn thought. Suddenly the patient stood and swung a fist at the Doctor, who nimbly avoided the contact, then quietly and calmly asked the patient to sit down. The three of them watched this scene about ten minutes with the patient alternately being calm then excited. At no time did Kathryn or Chakotay see the Doctor touch the patient with his hands or instruments. In fact, Kathryn suddenly realized there was no equipment or instruments of any kind in the room.
Kathryn then felt Jaimie take her arm and suddenly they found themselves in another room, much larger than the first. In this room were three patients and three Doctors. This situation was different. All three patients were either sitting or lying on a cot and the Doctors were merely touching them with their hands in various places and for different lengths of time. Kathryn looked around and noticed once again no equipment or instruments.
For the next two hours Jaimie constantly transported them from room to room and watched Kathryn and Chakotay as they studiously observed each scene. Patients were seen talking in a relaxed atmosphere in groups, visibly irritated or disturbed patients with Doctors attending them, more 'laying on of the hands,' but never equipment. Kathryn suddenly realized that not once did she ever hear a Doctor raise their voice to a patient. Other areas showed patients playing games, tending gardens or relaxing in their rooms.
Only in the last room did they see equipment. A patient was placed on a bed and pads placed on his temples and forehead. Aha, thought Kathryn. This proves Jaimie wrong! However as she watched she realized she was the one that was mistaken.
A nearby machine showed the brainwave pattern that seemed quite normal. The Doctor compared this brainwave with another that had many spikes. "Quite an improvement, Nagor, I think you are ready to be released to the commune for a year and after that hopefully to return to your family and living life on your own again."
The patient smiled broadly. "Thank you Doctor, I haven't felt this acceptance of myself for a long time."
Kathryn boiled to ask questions everywhere they had been, but maintained silence per Jaimie's request. Chakotay indicated a keen interest in each site and seemed to have a sense of understanding what was going on. Kathryn began to feel frustrated, and wanted to stay longer in one instance. Jaimie, of course, immediately picked up on her irritation, took firm hold of her arm, and frowned at Kathryn as she slowly shook her head while placing her finger over her lips. Kathryn tightened her mouth and nodded.
After they had observed a patient's second evaluation Jaimie felt they had seen enough and linking their arms, punched her belt and they were back in the Ready Room of Voyager.
"All right, Kathryn, let me get those belts off before you explode with all those questions I know are boiling inside you."
The minute the belts were off Kathryn started walking, stopped and stared out the view port, then walked some more, periodically raising her hands up in the air as if debating with herself. Occasionally she stopped and looked at Chakotay and Jaimie sitting on the couch, then resumed her pacing. Jaimie herself glanced at Chakotay periodically and silently mused 'How calm and quiet he is, and so patient with his beloved Captain.'
Finally Jaimie could stand it no longer. "For gosh sakes, Kathryn, will you stop. You'd make a tiger nervous!"
Kathryn halted and looked at Jaimie. "Ask your questions," Jaimie said and for the next half hour Kathryn did just that, bombarding Jaimie with questions about what they saw or didn't see. Occasionally a well-thought out question from Chakotay in his calm voice seemed to slow Kathryn down. At one point they both agreed the treatment seemed to be like a slow-motion Vulcan mind meld and Jaimie thought they might begin to understand the treatments used on this planet, but immediately Kathryn fired off more questions.
Finally only one question remained: "Are we breaking the Prime Directive or any Starfleet law if we left him here?" Janeway asked Chakotay.
"I think that's a matter for all Senior Officers to discuss."
Janeway agreed and immediately tapped her Com badge. "Mr. Tuvok, have all the senior staff arrange for relief and report to the Briefing Room immediately."
"Understood, Captain," came the reply. With that Kathryn and Chakotay headed out of the room. Jaimie cloaked and silently followed, fervently hoping this issue would soon be settled. She had known Kathryn Janeway was stubborn, but actually seeing her in action, unwilling to bend or change her mind until absolutely sure was an eye opener. 'Blast, she's worse than an iron wall! They'll never believe me when I get back.
Soon everyone was gathered around the table. Janeway looked intently at each person. How was she going to broach the subject of knowing what the treatment was when they had supposedly been in the Ready Room for 2 1/2 hours? Making her decision, she tapped her Com badge and asked the Ops Ensign to again contact the Prime Minister and patch it in to the Briefing Room. After a few moments the visage of the Prime Minister appeared.
"What now, Captain?" he asked in a tired voice.
"Since you wont allow us down on the planet we would like to ask some questions concerning how Ensign Kauffman would be treated should we decide to relinquish the rights to him." She felt rather than saw some unease or surprise from her staff.
The Prime Minister thought a moment, then held up one hand indicating he wanted some time, and disappeared from view. Janeway could feel the awkward tension in the room. After a few minutes, the Prime Minister walked back in view.
"I have been advised that as these are extenuating circumstances with you being from the Alpha Quadrant that I may briefly answer your questions. But first let me give you a brief overview. We place a patient in facility that we call The Essence of Harmony. They are given an initial evaluation and placed in one of twelve stations dependant on the severity of their anger or crime. We then treat them by attempting to understand, with the patient, the cause. As the violent tendencies are controlled or changed the patient advances to the next step. The final step is placement in a commune for one year and when they are released from here they are free to live their life again as they see fit."
Janeway nodded and noted to herself that this was basically what they had observed. "You don't punish or execute any patients?"
"Heavens no, Captain! They are treated with the intent to blend them back into our society."
Tuvok, after asking Janeway's permission, asked, "Mr. Prime Minister, do you use instruments of any kind to change the brain pattern of the offender?"
"No, it is basically an evaluation involving discussion and the blending into harmony the mind of the individual . . . after all, that is what has happened to cause their action. Their brain has become in disharmony with the outside world and perception of self and society has changed to one of distrust and violence." Tuvok nodded in approval at this explanation.
"How long do these treatment's take? In other words, how long is a patient in this facility?" Tom Paris quickly asked.
"Depends on the individual and how badly their brain patterns have spiked. Each individual is in various facets of disharmony, but the usual pattern is anywhere from five to fifteen years, some less, some more."
A few other question were asked when B'Elanna suddenly asked, "How can we be sure this is the actual method of treatment and that you don't use instruments or brainwash them, or chemically alter their brain?"
Janeway whirled to look at B'Elanna, but did not see the mistrust or anger she anticipated, only deep concern. Turning back to the screen, she was relieved to see the Prime Minister had not taken offense, but merely gave a small smile and nodded.
"I suppose it is a matter of trust . . . you believing what I'm telling you. We are an Isolationist Society and only the citizens themselves know of this treatment. But I assure you, Captain, and your staff, I have no reason to lie to you." He suddenly looked off screen, nodded and turned back to the viewer. "There is one other way, Captain. Our sister planet Koban has had two people treated here and upon completion of the treatment were released and returned to their homes in Koban. Feel free to check with them."
"And how far is this planet?" Kathryn asked.
"At high speed, you could make it there in half a day," came the reply.
Janeway shook her head. "Too much time," and turned to the people in the room.
"Anyone else have a question?" Shaking heads was the only reply. Turning back, she said, "Thank you Mr. Prime Minister. You have been most patient with our questions. As I stated before, you will have my answer at 1200 hours tomorrow." The Prime Minister merely nodded and the screen went black.
"All right people, you've asked your questions and heard the explanation. It's time for discussion."
Tom Paris immediately spoke up. "I believed him, Captain, and all due respect to Starfleet and all, but it seems to me Kauffman will live a much better life on this planet than spending 60 years in our Brig."
"In addition to what Mr. Paris has said," interjected Tuvok, "From what I heard I am struck by the similarity to a Vulcan Mind Meld, only over a longer period of time. A slow-motion process if you will." Both Janeway and Chakotay smiled, recalling their own similar discussion.
Debate pro and con continued for another twenty minutes as the group explored all possible solutions and angles. Jaimie, leaning against the wall and still cloaked, smiled to herself. She, of course, knew just exactly how this was going to end, but it was exciting to hear it first hand. She was also highly impressed with this senior staff.
Janeway finally excused the group. It was late and no new questions had been broached. Also she could feel a general leaning in favor of turning Kauffman over to the Kolin authorities, based on the treatment and the fact their energy and manpower would not be used for 60 years on one man. Kathryn smiled inwardly at that. That was exactly what Jaimie had tried to impress her with before. Was she fighting Jaimie just because she was Captain or was she really as stubborn as Jaimie kept telling her? Where was Jaimie anyway?
Turning her attention to Chakotay who still sat to her right she asked, "Where do you suppose Jaimie was during all of this?"
"Right here, Kathryn," said Jaimie as she suddenly appeared beside her, causing Kathryn to feel slightly startled.
"Can you verify what he said about the two Koban natives?'
"Sure, but it's still a matter of whether you believe the Prime Minister or not. As he said - a matter of trust."
"But do you know if this happened?" Kathryn persisted.
Jaimie sighed, whether of exasperation or defeat Kathryn could not be sure. "You're supposed to make this decision Kathryn, without any outside help from me. I'm already in so much trouble with what I've done and what I've told you, I'll be lucky to get only 15 years in the Brig. Captain Gates, my boss, will meet me there and in an exasperated tone will say, 'All right, Jaimie, what did you do this time!"
Kathryn and Chakotay couldn't help smiling at this. "Sounds like that happens often," Chakotay said laughing.
"Yeah, I have this problem where I like people I'm trying to help and end up saying or telling them something I shouldn't." All three laughed at this and Jaimie continued. "Based on what this assignment was I KNOW he'll be upset!" She then shrugged her shoulders and looked directly at Chakotay. "Can't help it, it's my nature to help people and have compassion for them." Kathryn did not miss the look or the statement, but decided not comment.
Then Jaimie laughed out loud. "I can tell you this. After my last two assignments, I just went straight to the Brig. It took Gates a half hour the first time to realize where I was, only ten minutes the second time and this time he will be there waiting for me!"
"Well Chakotay," Kathryn said after they had all stopped laughing, "It's been a long day. I think we should both retire for the evening."
"I will be available at anytime if you want to talk some more, need a sounding board or have any more questions, Kathryn."
"I know," she said and gently laid her hand on his forearm.
Chakotay smiled and headed out the door. Suddenly right beside him he heard, "Kathryn is in love with you, Chakotay."
"What? Where are you?"
"Right beside you. You know I can't de-cloak out here in the corridor."
They walked in silence a few moments and finally Chakotay let a soft smile come across his face. "Do you know that for a fact or are you guessing?"
Silence.
Another few steps and finally Chakotay said, "Well?"
"You know I can't answer that," came the reply.
Chakotay smiled and said, "Well with all you've told us already, one more infraction wont hurt."
"Nice try, Chakotay. Goodnight."
"Jaimie? Jaimie?"
Chakotay found himself smiling again as he reached his quarters. Somehow Jaimie's silence had given him the answer he desired.
* * *
It was 1159 hours and all Senior Officers plus Neelix were gathered on the Bridge. Janeway and Chakotay stood and came to the front. Turning to Ensign Kim, Captain Janeway said, "Now Harry."
The Prime Minister appeared on the screen moments later. "My compliments Captain Janeway, you are true to your word and right on time.
"Janeway smiled. "I'm sure you understand this has been a very difficult decision to make. Many hours of discussion with my First Officer Chakotay and my staff, plus researching the Starfleet laws, bylaws and logs . . . anyway after many heart-breaking and agonizing hours I have finally reached a decision. With our understanding that Ensign Kauffman will never be harmed, we. - I -," she corrected, "have decided to turn Ensign Kauffman over to you for treatment."
The Prime Minister smiled. "I fully understand how difficult it was for you to make this decision, Captain. We understand and admire your loyalty to your crew, but this is a wise decision. We have the time and resources to help heal him, whereas you do not, and I assure you he will have a good life here."
"If you will give us your coordinates, we will send a shuttle down with Mr. Kauffman aboard."
"No need, Captain." With that the Prime Minister closed his eyes and held up his hand. Moments later a bewildered Ensign Kauffman appeared at his side. At the same moment a call came from the Brig that Ensign Kauffman had disappeared.
"It's all right, Ensign, we see him on our view screen." Janeway, eyes still wide in obvious astonishment, sputtered, "You have advanced technology!"
The Prime Minister smiled. "Yes, Captain, we are far advanced beyond you, but we could not disclose that fact for obvious reasons. We actually could have transported Mr. Kauffman anytime we wished, but it was our desire this decision come from you. Again I assure you Mr. Kauffman will not be harmed. We have already made a tentative evaluation of him and find his time to heal will take approximately four years. He really has some good traits in him and should be quite receptive to our treatment, which by the way, Captain, does as I told you before, heal from within.
"The part not told you is that we first start work on the patient's aura. Once the rifts heal, then healing starts taking place within the body. This involves . . ." and he hesitated searching for the correct words, then smiled. "In your earth's 20th Century you had healers who used the 'Laying On Of The Hands' technique and that is basically our method. It is actually, as I believe you surmised at one point, an enhanced version of a mind meld as done by your Vulcan officer, but without the draining effects on the healer."
Janeway nodded and smiled, a new understanding and acceptance of these people showing on her face, and because of that she felt she must tell the Prime Minister the truth.
"I must be honest with you. Commander Chakotay and I made a secret trip to your center to observe the treatment being used." A gasp and stir went up from Bridge members at this startling announcement and Janeway could picture the deep frown that was undoubtedly on Tuvok's face.
"We were well aware of your visit Captain, but allowed it after discussion with The Emissary."
"Emissary?" questioned Janeway.
"Yes, and I'm quite sure when you think about it you will understand."
Slowly the realization of just whom the Prime Minister was referring dawned on Janeway's face and she looked at Chakotay. He smiled and nodded his head, indicating he also understood.
Janeway then turned back to the screen. "With the powers we now know you to possess, will you be able to return Ensign Kauffman to Voyager or the Alpha Quadrant when he is healed?"
Again the Prime Minister nodded and looked at Ensign Kauffman. "That choice, however, will be up to Mr. Kauffman. It is quite possible he will be content to remain here."
For the first time Janeway looked at Kauffman and realized he had been standing quietly during this whole conversation. Even now, Janeway thought to herself, he seemed calm.
The Prime Minister glanced at someone off screen and nodded his head. An Aide walked into view, took Kauffman's arm and led him away. "The official evaluation will begin immediately, Captain."
Kathryn then heaved a big sigh and looked down at the floor, still troubled by leaving a Federation citizen behind. She then realized Chakotay had called her name and was now gently touching her arm.
"The Prime Minister is speaking to you Captain."
"Captain, I have a surprise for you. We have debated doing this, but The Emissary has convinced us it will be uplifting to you and your crew's spirits." With that he raised his hand and a shimmering light of brilliant intensity appeared on the screen. Gradually the light lessened and a human form began to take shape.
"It's Kes!" shouted Neelix as he rushed up beside Janeway and Chakotay.
"Hello Captain, Commander, Neelix," she said with a big smile on her face. "It's so nice to see all of you again." She then looked at Tuvok, Tom, Harry and B'Elanna and greeted them in turn. "I'm sorry I can't come aboard Voyager to visit you all, but I still do not have my power under full control. But I am so glad to see you all once again!"
Janeway felt her eyes sting and could only whisper, "Oh Kes, it is so good to see you once again, we have all missed you so much." She glanced at Chakotay and saw that his eyes, too, were glistening, and knew without looking that the entire Bridge was experiencing the same emotion.
"Are you all right? Are you happy?"
Kes smiled and said, "Yes, Captain, I am very happy. The Kolin are teaching me to use my new entity, and I will be here for a while yet. Also, Captain, I can guarantee Ensign Kauffman will be well treated here."
Janeway nodded. "Seeing you there I am now in complete agreement with the Prime Minister that this was the right decision. And Kes, we want to thank you for your gift when you left Voyager last year."
Kes smiled and replied, "Well strap yourselves down, Captain, I'm going to send you on your way again."
"Another present, Kes?" said Janeway smiling.
"A Gift of Love for you all, Captain. Farewell to all of you," and then after seeing Janeway and Chakotay sit in their chairs, closed her eyes.
Voyager screamed through space, dipping, twisting, seemingly out of control, yet with the crew understanding they were safe. After a few moments, Voyager slowed down and settled in on Impulse power. Janeway looked first at Chakotay, smiled and then slowly rose to her feet.
"Report, Tom."
Paris studied his panel a few seconds then turned in his chair to face everyone. A big grin spread across his face. "Kes has just placed us eleven point nine thousand light years closer to the Alpha Quadrant."
Janeway looked up at Chakotay who was now standing beside her. Placing his hand on her shoulder, he grinned. "We're almost 12 years closer to home, Kathryn."
Everyone on the Bridge was very excited and laughed about the trip being shortened once again. Neelix, in his euphoria at seeing Kes again fairly bubbled, "Just think what she will do the next time we see her Captain. Why, she will probably dock us at home!" Then Neelix continued, "And we will see Kes again Captain - I know it!"
Janeway placed her arm around the pudgy Talaxian, and with a big smile on her face replied, "You know what, Neelix, I do believe you are right!"
Slowly the Bridge settled down and Voyager's place in space was determined and that all systems were fully functional. Janeway then stood, looked at her First Officer, and said, "Well Chakotay, while everyone is busy what say you and I celebrate this latest gift from Kes over a cup of hot tea," and she headed for the Ready Room with Chakotay following.
Chakotay then chimed out, "Mr. Tuvok, you have the Bridge!"
Kathryn, just as excited over this latest event, turned and playfully punched Chakotay on the arm. "That's my line, Commander."
"I just beat you to it, Captain. Besides, I haven't said that for quite a while."
Both were smiling broadly as they entered the Ready Room, still hearing the excited buzz among the Bridge crew on seeing Kes and being closer to home.
* * *
After getting their tea from the Replicator, Kathryn and Chakotay walked over to the couch, each giving a huge sigh as they sat down.
"Quite a day, Chakotay."
"An amazing day, Kathryn."
"A wild-ride day if you ask me," came a voice to their right. At that point Jaimie appeared leaning against the nearby wall. Smiling, she added, "don't cha think?"
Kathryn and Chakotay exchanged amused glances. "Now why aren't we surprised that you're still here, Jaimie - or should I call you 'Emissary'?"
Jaimie laughed as she pushed away from the wall. "That was the only name the PM and I could think of that we felt sure you would understand. After all, he couldn't say your 'Time Traveling friend' now could he?"
Kathryn, with a quick glance at Chakotay, asked, "Tell me something, Jaimie."
"If I can" came the skeptical reply.
"You knew all along about these people and their technology didn't you?"
"Yes."
"And about Kes being here."
"Yes."
"Then why did you try to convince me not to stop here when this was obviously the best place?"
Jaimie gave Chakotay a smirk and said, "Well I know you Kathryn, and I knew that if I told you not to do something, your stubborn streak would rear its head and you would do it!"
A muffled sound escaped Chakotay's lips as he quickly placed both hands over his face and ducked his head.
"Oh stop that Chakotay, I see you laughing behind your hands! It's obvious Jaimie has corrupted you and you need a lesson on proper decorum in front of your Captain."
Although Chakotay kept his hand over his mouth, desperately trying to keep from laughing out loud, he nodded and answered, "Yes, Captain, I'll try to do better in the future."
Glancing up at Jaimie, Kathryn rolled her eyes and then said, "I'm not that stubborn am I?"
Chakotay and Jaimie both glanced quickly at each other, and Jaimie replied, "I take the fifth!" and both burst out laughing.
Kathryn shook her head in mock exasperation and said, "You two are terrible but I still don't believe I'm as bad as you two are making it seem." Chakotay and Jaimie simply rolled their eyes.
Kathryn opened her mouth to say something, then stopped and looked Jaimie up and down. "You've taken off the Starfleet uniform I see. What kind of clothes are those?"
Glancing down at herself, Jaimie grinned. "These are my traveling clothes, I found them one time on 20th Century Earth. Patting her upper leg she said, "These are called Levis," then moving her hand to her chest, "This is a Western shirt, and this is what they call a Down Vest," she said as she touched the vest. Then lifting her foot in the air, "And these are 'tennies', although I must admit they are very confusing in a way. They all have different names based on their markings. Anyway I like to travel in them."
Realizing the intent of what she was saying, Janeway stood and looked at Jaimie. "Traveling? You are leaving us I take it."
"Yep. My job is done. Now I have to go home and face the medicine."
"Will we ever see you again Jaimie?" Chakotay asked.
"If I have my way I will stop by every time I'm out this way. However, with all the transgressions I've committed on this job, I'll be lucky if I ever get another assignment. Usually I'm not this bad, but the two of you are special people to me," and she stopped and just looked at them a moment before continuing. "I sorta bent the rules a little."
Kathryn, with a mock expression of shock said, "A LITTLE? Seems to me you buried them ten feet underground!"
Jaimie laughed. "Yeah and because of that this will go clear to the Admiral and he'll cluck his tongue at me. Actually the Brig isn't so bad. Gates has allowed me to set up my tracking and communications work in the cell." Then with a sheepish smile she added, "Plus they never put the force field up. I could actually walk out anytime, if I wanted to."
Kathryn smiled. "Why do I get the feeling you run SI?"
They all laughed then Chakotay asked, "How do they know what transgressions you commit?"
"Oh I tell them, of course." She looked at Kathryn. "I know you don't think highly of me and actually dislike me, but as I've told you before I'm honest - as well as outspoken."
A look of dismay crossed Kathryn's face as she quickly said, "Oh no, Jaimie, I don't dislike you at all. As a matter of fact I have grown quite fond of you over the last three days. It was just that . . ." and Kathryn hesitated.
The hesitation caused Jaimie to incline her head and ask, "Just what Kathryn - that I irritated the heck out of you at the beginning because I was so brash and aggressive? Maybe you saw a little of yourself in me."
Color spread across Kathryn's face. "I am aggressive by nature I suppose as a result of my upbringing to stand up for what I believe in. But you have to admit," Janeway said as she pointed a finger at Jaimie. "You came on like a buzz saw the first time we met!"
Jaimie laughed loudly. "Yes, but only because I knew your 'nature' as well as knowing mine, and realized I had to make a quick point without a lot of argument . . . which I still got by the way."
All three laughed, followed by an awkward few moments as the enormity of what had occurred the last three days engulfed them. Then Jaimie stepped close to Kathryn. "Well Kathryn, I must get going. I accomplished my job. I was here at the right time and things are as they should be. I hope you don't mind a hug from a 29th century scalawag."
With that she suddenly reached out and wrapped her arms around Kathryn who responded with a big hug of her own. "I will miss you Jaimie."
Jaimie smiled, and then turned to Chakotay who had already stepped close to her and immediately wrapped his arms around her. Jaimie's eyes started to mist as the enormity of her own situation engulfed her, but she quickly regained control and after a moment leaned back in Chakotay's arms and looked into his eyes. Reaching up she gently placed the back of her hand against his cheek. Her mouth opened as if she was going to say something, but then she stopped, stepped away and said "What a hunk!"
Looking at Kathryn she asked, "How can you resist him, Kathryn?"
Kathryn's face flushed and she quickly glanced at Chakotay and then back to Jaimie. "I'm not sure I have," she said softly. Chakotay's eyes widened and filled with love for his Captain.
Jaimie smiled. "Well just remember, "Resistance is Futile! Besides you're 48 years from home yet and . . . well that's another story. But they don't come any better, Kathryn," she said as she patted Chakotay on the back. "He gave up his ship for you, blended his crew into Voyager where there could have been trouble and took a demotion to serve at your side."
Janeway looked Chakotay full in the eyes and said, "I'm well aware of all that. The problem is the integrity of the command structure."
"A bunch of hogwash in this situation if you ask me," growled Jaimie. "Deep feelings or love can't be stopped by a bunch of Starfleet rules that in my opinion, considering your circumstances, are quite antiquated, Kathryn."
A soft "Maybe," was the only response Jaimie and Chakotay heard. Then Kathryn broke eye contact with Chakotay. "Have a safe trip, Jaimie."
Jaimie turned without a word. This scene was almost too much for her and it would be best if she say nothing more. She had only taken a couple of steps for the door when Kathryn said, "Jaimie, with all that you have said and done here I was wondering . . ."
"Don't Kathryn," Jaimie interrupted, "I can't tell you!" Then glancing at Chakotay, she shook her head and asked, "Does she ever stop wheedling?"
Chakotay smiled broadly and while shaking his head said, "Never."
Kathryn shrugged her shoulders and held her hands out to the side. "Well I didn't think it would hurt to ask when we get back home and do we all make it safely?"
"Don't put me in that position Kathryn, you know I can't tell you that." Jaimie turned and walked another five steps toward the door, hesitated, then turned to face them while backpedaling. Smiling she said, "I love you two very much. Take good care of yourselves . . . you have a long trip ahead of you," and with that she cloaked and went out into the corridor.
A gasp escaped from Kathryn and she quickly hurried through the still open door. "Jaimie, I know you're out here. Thank you."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," came the soft reply.
Kathryn stepped back into the room. Placing her hand on Chakotay's shoulder as they moved towards the couch she said, "Well she told us something Chakotay. At least we know that much."
"And knowing you as I do, Kathryn, the next time she stops by you'll try to wheedle another answer from her."
They both laughed and Kathryn turned to get two cups of Herbal Tea from the Replicator as Chakotay sat down on the couch.
Meanwhile, Jaimie, who had by then transported to her ship, parked on Voyager in 'Shadow Mode', smiled as she listened and watched them on her screen. "You're a good wheedler, Kathryn, and you will see me again. Maybe someday you'll know . . ."
Jaimie shook her head, and then smiled. Now was definitely not the time. She leaned back in her chair.
"Computer."
"Jaimie's voice recognized."
"Let's set this bucket of bolts for the return home."
"Bucket of bolts does not compute. Please refrain from slang, Jaimie."
"Oh don't be such a prude, you know what I mean."
Silence.
"Okay, okay," she growled. "You want formal we'll do formal, but I'm re-programming you when we get home!"
In the Ready Room Kathryn and Chakotay sat drinking their tea, quietly reflecting over these momentous last few days. Janeway then tapped her Com badge. "Janeway to Paris."
"Paris here, Captain."
"Let's bump it up to Warp 8 Tom, when you're ready."
"Yes ma'am."
Jaimie finished punching in her coordinates on the console, leaned back and said, "All right, let's go."
Slowly the ship rose and turned to face the opposite direction of Voyager.
"Engage," said Tom.
"Engage," said Jaimie.
The two ships simultaneously sped apart - each heading for home.
