The Jaimie Series - Part 7
The Ceremony
by Dee Price
Jaimie peered intently down at her desk, her face a study in concentration. Taking a deep breath she nodded her head and muttered "Okay", moved her chair and stepped closer to the desk. Hesitating a fraction, she then bent down and started to attach a wire. A sudden spark and resultant miniature explosion startled her causing her to jerk upright and step back, catching her foot on the leg of the chair. As she attempted to untangle her foot she lost her balance, stumbled backwards a step and then sat with a thud on the floor. Slapping both hands on the floor she growled out loud, "Blast this 24th Century equipment! Now I will have to start all over again."
Getting to her feet she stood with her hands on her hips, staring in disgust at the still smoldering wires and shattered relay connector. Waving her hand in defeat she turned and headed for the door. As it opened she charged out and bumped into Tom Paris just going by, sending them both off balance.
"Ooof, oh sorry Tom, I didn't see you."
"Obviously," he said as he rubbed at his chest. Then looking closely at Jaimie he smiled and asked, "Where are you going in such a hurry and what have you been doing?"
"Why do you ask," she said frowning.
"Well, you have a black smudge on your face and you sure were in a hurry."
Jaimie smiled in embarrassment as she wiped at her face. "Oh, just working on something."
Tom could barely keep from laughing out loud. "Now you've smeared it. Better go back in your room and clean up."
Jaimie turned, walked back into her room and headed for the basin. Tom, ever curious, followed her, spotted the mess on the desk and walked over to look at it. "What the heck is this?"
Jaimie peered around the corner, at first startled, then irritated, and finally amused he had followed into her quarters. "Oh just something I'm trying to build. Not much luck though, this equipment is so antiquated."
Tom smiled as his eyes darted around the room. "You keep forgetting you have to apply 24th Century thinking to this equipment." When she didn't answer he turned and looked in her direction and suddenly felt very uncomfortable being where he wasn't invited.
"By the way," he called out, "I was just heading to the Holodeck to see if anyone wanted to play Velocity, Hoverball or Tennis. Interested?"
Jaimie came walking around the corner still drying her hands and scowled at Tom. Then throwing the towel over her 'mess' she suddenly smiled. "Yeah, I think I would. I need to get rid of some frustration and what better person to take it out on then Voyager's inquisitive, sarcastic Helmsman."
"Aw come on, Jaimie, I'm going to beat you someday, I swear I will," he said ignoring the jibes
"Right," she said clapping him on the shoulder as they headed for the door, "And the day I lose to you I'm heading home."
"In that case, I plan on losing," and they both started to laugh as they headed up the corridor.
From behind Janeway and Chakotay turned the corner and spotted Tom and Jaimie. Janeway noting their laughter said, "Jaimie has made quite a friend in Tom hasn't she?"
Chakotay nodded. "They do seem to have struck up quite a camaraderie. Good thing. Tom misses doing things with Harry and this gives him an outlet. Wouldn't surprise me in the least that Jaimie is doing that purposely."
"How is Harry? I'm ashamed to admit I haven't kept up with his rehab lately."
"Hasn't made much progress since his setback two weeks ago and is getting quite discouraged. But the Doctor tells me Jaimie comes in every evening and works with Harry and that's the only time he brightens up."
"Every day? Jaimie is such a wonderful person, isn't she Chakotay?"
Chakotay bent his head towards her ear and whispered, "Just like her 11th Great Grandmother."
Kathryn smiled and looked up at him and immediately became lost in his eyes that at that moment were so full of love for her it almost took her breath away. "Stop that, Chakotay, we're on duty."
"Stop what?" he asked smiling mischievously as he noted a tinge of color creeping into her face.
"You know what," she said as they arrived at the turbolift, only to find Tom and Jaimie still waiting.
"Turbo not running?" she asked looking at Tom.
Tom, noting both their faces seemed flushed, opened his mouth to reply when the lift doors suddenly opened, stopping whatever he planned to say. Extending his arm he smiled, "After you Captain, Commander."
Jaimie, standing to one side of Tom, flashed a mischievous grin at Kathryn and Chakotay and proceeded to walk in before anyone else.
"Jaimie!" exclaimed Tom.
Jaimie chuckled. "Senior privilege, Tom." As Kathryn and Chakotay followed behind her they had a hard time maintaining a straight face.
Tom stepped in and said sarcastically, "Yeah, 500 years plus your age, I guess that's senior enough."
"Nobody loves a smart-ass, Tom," shot back Jaimie and as Tom started laughing Kathryn called out in a choked voice, "Bridge."

Later, Jaimie having finished her Hoverball Match with Tom headed for Sick Bay, and as she reached that deck started to jog, realizing she was later than usual. Nearing a corner she impulsively decided to take it at full speed to see if she could do it without losing stride and immediately collided with a Lt. sending both of them sprawling on the deck.
"Oh blast! I'm sorry, are you okay," asked Jaimie as she scrambled to her feet and held out a helping hand to the Lt.
He rose and smiled, to which Jaimie immediately felt relief that he wasn't mad. "I am fine, thank you Lt.", he replied.
"Ah, ah," cautioned Jaimie wagging a finger at him. "My name is Jaimie. I don't cotton to rank."
His grin widened. "Then you must be the traveler Jaimie."
"My reputation is spreading I see. Yep that's me, but I'm not traveling too well today. You are the second person I have bumped into in the last two hours," she said laughing. "And you are White Rain, I believe."
His eyes widened slightly in surprise. "You know my name? Our paths have not crossed before." Then he chuckled as he looked at her, the laugh coming from deep within his chest and taking on a deep rumble. "Maybe a good thing if you keep running over people."
Jaimie laughed delightedly. "Well they say things run in threes so warn everybody you see that I'm out of my room!" White Rain laughed at that, Jaimie then waved her hand and said, "I've got to go. I'm late to help Harry" and turned and started trotting. Suddenly she turned and as she back-pedaled called out, "I'd like to talk to you sometime, White, Rain, and Lopez, too."
White Rain, still watching her, held up his hand in agreement and replied "I would like that," then turned and peered cautiously around the corner before going on his way. Jaimie grinned as she saw this then said softly, "You still have an important role to play in Chakotay's life, White Rain, so stay healthy," then turned and continued to trot towards Sick Bay, although being careful at the next junction.

Harry sat on the bio bed staring blankly into the room. He was in a very 'feel sorry for Harry' mood right now.
The Doctor walked over and looked at him disapprovingly. "Mr. Kim you are not doing your exercises."
"This Stimulator isn't helping, Doc," he said giving a wave of his hand towards the pad on his head.
"It takes time, Mr. Kim. You are as impatient as Lt. White Rain was," he grumped. "I'm referring to your leg exercises. Unless you keep your muscles strong you will never be able to walk."
"What good will strong muscles do if I can't walk?'
"You will never walk with that attitude Mr. Kim. Now I have work to do and I suggest you do the same."
"Someone feeling a bit down in the dumps today?" came a voice from the door.
Harry, recognizing the voice of Jaimie, immediately broke into a large smile. "About time you got here, I'm tired of arguing with Doc."
Jaimie smiled. "So are you saying you would much rather argue with me?" At Harry's horrified expression and denial she laughed. "Okay but you mustn't argue with the Doctor, Harry. What's the problem today?"
"Just discouraged I guess. Nothing's working, I'm not getting any better, so I'm feeling useless."
"Bad word useless. Besides, falling out of bed awhile back certainly didn't help your rehab. You took quite a nasty crack on your head and that set you back. I should be nasty and tell you it serves you right for trying to get out of bed without help, but I wont."
Harry gave half a grin and said, "I know, but I was able to walk pretty good and now I can hardly stand up by myself."
"Well you have regained your speech and your hands are getting better. Just look at it as your legs are the farthest from your brain," she added with a laugh.
Harry grinned. Even though he knew what she said wasn't true it still made him laugh. "That must be it, Jaimie!" Then he looked closely at her. "You are all sweaty."
"Well besides knocking people over in the corridor I just came from the holodeck and a game of Hoverball with Tom."
"And . . . ?"
"Same o same o, that boy will never learn." Reaching down she moved Harry's right leg and started massaging it. "Seriously Harry you must keep up your exercising and do what the good old Doctor says."
"But you said a few weeks back that a planet down the line . . ."
"I said MIGHT Harry, might! Sheesh will you people ever learn to listen to my words?"
"Sorry it's just that you . . ."
Jaimie immediately stopped massaging Harry's leg and holding up a finger glared at him, that look saying more than any words possibly could. Harry blushed and nodded his head, understanding fully what she was saying.
Just then Janeway walked in. "Good evening you two. How are things, Harry?"
"Okay I guess, Captain. I just wish I could start getting better so I could be helpful around the ship."
"In time, Harry. In the meantime you have a mind. I think we should utilize that while you are working on your rehab . . . something that will help improve the efficiency of Voyager, perhaps."
Jaimie glanced approvingly at Kathryn and as she looked back at Harry admonished, "Yeah, Harry, start using that noggin of yours. Make yourself useful instead of sitting around like a fifth wheel and feeling sorry for yourself."
"Jaimie!" said Janeway sharply.
"It's all right, Captain," said Harry. "She's right, I haven't been doing anything but feeling sorry for myself." Then looking at Jaimie, "What do you think I should work on?"
"Oh no you don't, don't go pulling me into this." Slapping his leg she indicated she was finished with that one and moved the left into position.
"But . . ." said Harry with a pleading tone.
"No, buts Harry. You've got to do this for yourself!" and she gave the leg an unusually hard squeeze while jerking it, then looked up and exclaimed, "See Harry, you felt that, so don't give up on your exercises, understand?"
Harry, sudden excitement in his face, said "Okay! I'll double my efforts."
Jaimie rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Just do what the Doctor tells you, dumbo."
Kathryn stood watching this exchange and couldn't help marvel at Jaimie's way of getting people to respond. She just had a way about her.
Later as Kathryn and Jaimie were walking down the corridor, Janeway complimented her on not making a suggestion on what Harry could do and added that it was great he was getting more feeling back in the left leg.
Jaimie stopped, started rubbing at her head and said, "Well you see, Kathryn, Harry really didn't feel anything. I jerked his leg and made him think he felt it."
Kathryn's face first expressed surprise then sadness. "You mean there's no hope for that leg?"
"Didn't say that. Let me explain it this way . . . people should never give up hope, but Harry has. I just had to get him back on track. The mind is such a powerful ally, but we haven't tapped its full potential, even in the 29th Century. Harry just needed that spark of hope so he wouldn't give up and I gave it to him by making him think he felt something extra in that leg."
"You are a marvel, Jaimie," said Kathryn smiling. "Thank you for all you are doing with Harry. Chakotay tells me you are there every day."
Jaimie just shrugged. "Gives me something to do. Speaking of Chakotay, where is that handsome man?"
"In his quarters I believe," she said as she stared off into space.
Jaimie smiled to herself, knowing she was thinking of Chakotay. "Oh, okay. Well here are my quarters. Goodnight Kathryn."
"Goodnight, Jaimie, see you in the morning."
Chakotay sat in his dark room listening intently for a familiar voice. Finally he heard Kathryn and Jaimie coming down the corridor, then bid each other goodnight. Walking over to the Replicator he said, "One deep Red Rose, one bottle of vintage Champagne and two glasses." Gathering them up he left his room and rapped on Kathryn's door.
Jaimie, whose 29th Century hearing was acute, smiled as she heard the rapping and Kathryn's response. A relaxing conversation with a cocktail - things were progressing as they should she mused to herself. Then she frowned deeply as she thought of Tom Paris. He was becoming a big problem and she hadn't yet figured out what to do.

Midway through the morning shift Tuvok looked up from his console. "We are now within hailing distance of the approaching ship, Captain."
Janeway stood. "Open frequencies, Mr. Tuvok and hail them."
"They are replying, Captain."
"On screen." As a man with a rather stern expression appeared she said, "Good day to you sir. I am Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager. We are passing through your space on our way home. I trust this is all right?"
The man did not reply immediately, then tilted his head and asked, "Where are you from Captain? This Starship Voyager does not come to mind as being from this area."
"We are from a planet called Earth in the Alpha Quadrant."
"Alpha Quadrant! You are a long way from home, Captain. I've never met anyone from the Alpha Quadrant before. What is your compliment, Captain?"
"I don't understand."
"You number of crew members, your weaponry?"
"I don't see . . ."
"He's powering weapons!" called out Jaimie and before Chakotay could call out "Shields up" she had already done it. Just then Voyager was violently rocked by a blast to Starboard.
"Why are you firing on us? We have done nothing to provoke this attack!"
The man smiled. "A ship your size would be an exciting conquest and possession, Captain. Surrender now and we will do no more damage."
Kathryn turned and looked questioningly at Jaimie, but before she could ask anything Jaimie frowned and shrugged her shoulders.
Turning back to the screen Janeway said, "You have not identified yourself sir, or why you insist on taking this action. Is this the way of your species?"
"Who I am in is unimportant and meaningless to you. But, yes we are a warrior race from the planet Voss. Now I repeat, lower your shields to be boarded or we will destroy you." Then another explosion rocked Voyager as he fired again.
Regaining her balance Janeway turned her back to him and quietly asked Tuvok if sensors showed this planet nearby. Shaking his head he replied, "There are no planets indicated on our sensors, Captain."
Kathryn then glanced at Jaimie and received the same response. Chakotay walked up beside her and whispered, "He's only one ship, Captain, and my panel shows we are faster and better armed."
Kathryn nodded. "But I don't want to fight him if we can help it and I certainly don't want to run, at least not until we find where this planet is, Chakotay." Turning back to the screen she smiled. "We have no quarrel with you sir, and ask you to stop firing at us. I do not wish to engage you in a battle, which, by the way, we would surely win. Where is this planet Voss?"
The man responded with a malicious looking smile. "Thinking of running and don't know which way to go, Captain?"
"Our sensors show no planet in this area, which makes me think you do not belong here yourself. You are bluffing us, sir, in an attempt to procure a better transportation to wherever it is you are from." Placing her hands on her hips she stood staring at the man and waited for his answer.
Instead the man looked at Chakotay and then at the rest of the bridge. "You let a woman run your ship? You are sniveling, weakling, poor excuses for men!"
Kathryn turned to look at Chakotay and was going to intervene when she noticed his eyes and decided not to say anything. Chakotay stared at the man for a moment before crossing his arms across his chest. "On Earth man and woman have equal rights - one is not weaker than the other. She is Captain of this vessel and I am proud to serve with her."
At that moment, something unprecedented happened. Tom Paris suddenly stood and walked over beside Janeway, Tuvok left his post and took a position on the other side of Chakotay, while B'Elanna, having entered the Bridge unnoticed and hearing part of this exchange, walked quickly up beside Tom. All stood facing the screen, staring at the man.
Jaimie, remaining at her post, secretly smiled as she watched this show of unity, all the while aware Tuvok had quietly patched weapons control to her panel. When the man seemed momentarily taken aback and appeared to lose his concentration, Jaimie armed the Photon Torpedoes, and waited, her finger poised above the panel.
Kathryn squared her shoulders in pride at what had just happened, but was uneasy that all posts were empty. Suddenly she was aware Jaimie had not joined them and turning slightly glanced back over her shoulder. Jaimie was staring at the screen. Kathryn played a hunch that Jaimie would be ready for anything.
"We are not a warrior race, we are a peaceful race. However, when pushed we fight back." She hesitated a beat, hoping and praying she had guessed right and called out "Fire!"
Immediately a Photon torpedo was launched, even while Jaimie seemingly stared impassively at the view screen. The attacking ship rocked with an explosion, completely shutting down the Impulse Engines and Warp Drive, and tilted ominously to the side. Jaimie immediately followed with phaser fire to the Bridge and the communications and navigational panels on the Bridge spewed fire and were quickly followed by several explosions.
Janeway watched the confusion on their Bridge as people raced around putting out the fire. "I regret having to do that, but it seemed unless we fought back you were going to continue to provoke us."
The man reacted with a silent, yet noticeably angry tirade of words. Kathryn turned to Jaimie and indicated for her to cut off the view screen, then looked at everyone else and saw they were standing with a completely surprised expression on their faces.
Tom was the first to speak as he looked at Jaimie. "You little devil, to arm while we had his attention!"
Shaking her head Jaimie said, "Nope. Blame Tuvok, he transferred weapons control to my panel before joining you guys in that show of solidarity."
Tuvok frowned as everyone turned to face him with smiles on their faces.
"Why Mr. Tuvok, I'm surprised," said Chakotay with a large smile on his face.
"It seemed the logical thing to do," and with that he turned and walked quickly back to his post.
Kathryn smiled and looking at Jaimie said, "Excellent shooting Jaimie. You took out not only his drive capabilities, but his communications as well, although that was probably your intentions. Now he won't be able to call for reinforcements and this will give us time to locate this planet, if it does indeed exist in this area. Everyone - eyes sharp and Jaimie, extend all sensors. Keep a lookout for a planet and also any of his friends." Sitting down she looked at Chakotay who was moving to his chair. "Why does everyone in this Quadrant want to shoot first and say hello second? It gives me a headache!"
"Sounds like a caffeine break to me, Kathryn."
"I think you're right," she smiled. "Join me," and they headed for the Ready Room.
* * *
Following her shift and knowing most of the crew would be heading to the mess hall for dinner, Jaimie headed for the holodeck. She wanted to get some exercise. Upon arrival she found it was busy but entry was not locked so quietly stepped in. To her surprise two men were playing a game of some kind and bleachers were seen with people sitting and watching. Spotting White Rain she quickly headed his way and sat down beside him.
"Hello White Rain. We meet again."
He smiled. "Hello Jaimie, and I'm also thankful to be sitting." Both laughed.
"What's going on?" she asked.
"The Maintenance and Security departments are having a racquetball tournament. It's a game from the 20th century someone found in the database and after learning it some people decided to challenge us . . . why our department I do not know," he added with a chuckle.
Jaimie sat quietly watching for a moment and then whispered, "That's your friend Lopez playing now isn't it?"
"Yes it is Lopez."
"He's very good," said Jaimie. "I'd like to play him sometime – after I learn the game."
White Rain laughed deeply. "I think it would be best for Lopez to play you before you learn the game after what I have heard of your various games with Paris and the Captain!"
"Aw geez, somebody, probably Paris, has a big mouth."
White Rain chuckled and then stood and clapped as the game ended. "Lopez appears to have won his match," he said with a smile as he watched Lopez and his opponent leave the court. Lopez headed to where White Rain was and smiled shyly at Jaimie. White Rain introduced them and informed him Jaimie would like to play a game with him.
"Right now," he asked? "I'm a little tired."
Jaimie laughed. "That's when I like to play people – when they are exhausted! How else can this old lady win?" At that both White Rain and Lopez looked at one another and rolled their eyes, much to Jaimie's delight. They arranged for a game in two days and then started for the door. She walked out with them and then with a wave of her hand took off running down the corridor. She wanted to get something to eat, feeling that now the Mess Hall had probably thinned out.
"Be careful of the corners, Jaimie," White Rain called out. Jaimie laughed and told them she would.
* * *
Tom sat in the Mess Hall playing with his food, while occasionally glancing over at Jaimie sitting by herself in a corner. It was obvious she wanted to be alone, based on her choice of table, but he wasn't going to let this opportunity pass by. He had a question to ask. Rising, he picked up his plate and walked to her table. "Mind if I join you, Jaimie?"
Her look wasn't exactly a glad welcome, but she said, "Have a seat."
They passed a few minutes joking about the incident with the Voss ship, and then Tom suddenly put down his fork, leaned forward and quietly asked, "So tell me, Jaimie, how are you related to the Captain and Commander?"
Jaimie's heart lurched and she stopped her fork halfway to her mouth, and then quickly followed with the exclamation of "What!"
"Come on Jaimie. I can tell. There is some connection between you."
"You are sitting on a cracked limb, Tom. What do you mean connection?"
"There is something between you guys. I can feel it, Jaimie. What is it? Are you some descendent? God knows they love each other and just won't do anything about it."
Jaimie shook her head. "The only connection we have is a very strong bond of friendship that just seemed to occur the first time we met. Naturally I love them both, they are wonderful people, and the history of Voyager is well known in my time. It's just so neat to actually be with people you've read about."
"No, it's more than that, Jaimie. Come on you can tell me. I won't tell anyone else."
Jaimie sneered at that. "Tom you can't keep your mouth shut about anything. You are a devious, inquisitive, blabbermouth, who has made it a point to find out anything and everything about anybody and then leak it out to the whole ship!"
Tom blushed and felt momentary indignation and anger, then admitting internally it was true, smiled and said, "That's not true. I once kept a secret for a whole day!"
Both laughed and she said, "Well just stop trying to concoct a tie-in because there isn't any," and as she gave indications of leaving Tom quickly said, "Okay then, another question.
Jaimie scowled as she looked at him. "Are you going to be a pain in the butt, Tom?"
"Yes," he said as he smiled and asked "I've noticed you never call Captain Janeway Captain, in fact make a point of not saying it. Why?"
"Don't cotton to rank, never have, never will, my man. It's just a title and doesn't do the job - the person does. Look Tom I have to go. See you tomorrow morning."
"Invention again?" he inquired with a smirk.
"You're right - you are a pain in the butt," and she turned and left.
Tom sat and watched her leave. "I'll figure it out, Jaimie," he mused to himself, "because I know there's something." Finally he rose and after tossing his plate into the waste replicator left to see Harry.
Jaimie strode briskly into her quarters and uncharacteristically for her, kicked at a table as she walked through the room and then flopped on the couch. Blast Tom anyway! His ever-inquisitive mind had picked up on something for him to ask that question!
Rising suddenly she walked out of the room and to Kathryn's quarters, and rang the bell. Hearing 'enter' she walked in and saw Kathryn sitting on her couch by the view port. Sitting down by her she asked, "Kathryn may I ask you something?"
"Of course. What is it, Jaimie, you look a little upset."
"Tom just flat out asked me if I'm related to you and Chakotay. Told him he was off his rocker, but what have you entered into your logs?"
Kathryn quickly rose and strode to her desk, turning on the Log on her computer. Rolling it back she found where Jaimie had asked asylum and said, "Here, read for yourself. Hopefully you will find they read as you remember them from your century."
Jaimie sat down and while Kathryn went back to the couch and had some tea, Jaimie pored over the daily logs, both ship and personal. Finally satisfied she walked back to Kathryn and nodded her head. "Nothing there should our wise-ass helmsmen decide to check."
"What made him ask that? Have you let something slip around him?"
"No. I have been exceptionally careful, especially around Tom. Just in his mind
I guess. He said he feels a connection."
"Thank goodness you don't wear a Tattoo like your family!"
Jaimie grinned. "The day Katelyn decided to do it I went with her and almost had one put on myself! The only reason I didn't was because of the time travel business. Never knew when I might run into someone that would know the significance of the tattoo so I couldn't risk it."
Kathryn laughed. "Good thing. If Chakotay and I had seen it that day you saved our lives we would have known a lot sooner than we did!"
Jaimie joined in the laugh then said," I'm ahead of you on that. If I had a tattoo I had already decided that if I got an assignment with Voyager, I would hide it some way." She stood, smiled and said she was going back to her room. As she sat down on her sofa, she still felt ticked off. Blast Tom, anyway! His ever inquisitive mind . . . well, she would just have to be sure of what she said and did around him from now on. Just wouldn't do for him to know.
* * *
For the next week it was very quiet on Voyager, giving everyone time to catch up on reports, repairs, sleep and a lot of recreation time. Jaimie used most of that time to fiddle on her invention, changing the appearance, changing the connectors and adding a few more parts until finally she had what looked like a very crude Transferential Conduction Transponder. Even if it worked she couldn't tell anyone on Voyager about it, but it was not only relaxing to her but a good test of her mental abilities to try and build this.
Tilting her chair back, she stretched mightily. Too mightily it turned out as suddenly her chair went beyond 'the point of no return' and Jaimie landed with a crash on the floor, with her one leg flying up and kicking the table over. From her position on her back she saw the Transponder flying through the air. "Noooooooo," she yelled, and tried to reach out with her foot to deflect and possibly catch it, but it landed with a sharp crack and Jaimie dropped her head back on the floor and shut her eyes.
Her door chimed at that point and she called out "Enter" in a rather angry tone. Guinan walked in, took one look at the scene and smiled.
"Guinan!" said Jaimie sitting up. "I have seen you so seldom I keep forgetting you are here."
"Yes, it does seem our paths haven't crossed for awhile. I was passing by when I heard a yell and something fall." Noticing the mess on the floor she stepped over and kneeling down looked at it. Glancing at Jaimie she said, "You know you can't use this on Voyager, even if you hadn't broken it."
Jaimie smiled and nodded her head. "I know I was just fiddling around to see how close I could come with the materials they have in this century."
"Dangerous idea. If anyone saw this they could guess it's use and build one."
"I know. I intended to destroy it when it was finished and now I don't have to," she said breaking into a laugh. " So how are you anyway and how are things going for you on Voyager?"
"Fine, but I was wondering about you. This is more than just a change of ships. You've come back 500 years in time. It must be frustrating."
"Sometimes - the slowness of things and the awful equipment become frustrating. But it was my decision and I'm happy with it."
"Ever think of going back?"
"No, why do you ask?"
"No reason. Just that it's so different for you."
Jaimie stood up and looked at her for a moment. Finally, "All right, Guinan, out with it. You're not here for mindless chit chat."
Guinan smiled. "Ever the knowing one aren't you, Jaimie. Okay . . . I overheard Tom Paris in the Mess Hall yesterday talking to Lt. Torres. He feels you are related to the Captain and Commander."
Jaimie frowned. "He came right out and asked me a week ago what our connection was. I told him only a deep friendship."
"Well, he isn't buying it. Told B'Elanna he has been going over all the ships logs for quite a ways back and . . ."
"He won't find anything!" exclaimed Jaimie.
"Maybe not, but are you sure he won't?"
"Yes, I'm sure. Even Kathryn would know not to put anything like that in her personal logs."
"Have you checked them? Her personal logs?"
"Right after Tom confronted me with it last week I talked to Kathryn and she let me look over her logs. But I really didn't have to as they read the same as what I read in the 29th Century. There isn't anything about me until I came on board Voyager." She looked closely at Guinan. "What did B'Elanna say?"
"Thought Tom was crazy, but I detected a little uncertainty in her tone."
"Oh great! If she gets curious, they'll get Harry in on it and start him thinking!"
"So what are you going to do about it?"
"Nothing . . . nothing at all. If I even try to make an issue of it with Tom that will make him even more curious.
"Well I just thought I'd mention it. I'll leave you to clean up this mess," she said as she smiled and waved her hand at the Transponder. She had taken a couple of steps toward the door when she stopped and turned. "Oh, one more thing. If I ever decide I want to go back to the Enterprise . . ."
"It can be arranged, Guinan."
"Thought it might," she said with a knowing smile and left the room.
Jaimie stared out the view port, her hands on her hips and a deep scowl lining her face. "Tom Paris, you are going to be the death of me yet."
* * *
The next day, Jaimie was three hours into her shift when it happened - what she had been afraid might happen since coming on board Voyager. While working her panel she suddenly saw a flash for less than a nanosecond. After peering intently for a few moments, she raised her head, closed her eyes and groaned "Oh no."
Tuvok glanced at her and frowned, then tapping his panel and seeing nothing again turned to her and asked, "Would you care to explain that expression, Lt?"
Jaimie glanced at him and quickly moved out from behind her station and headed to where Janeway was seated. Stepping in front of her she said, "May I talk to you privately, Captain?"
Janeway, Chakotay and Tom Paris all turned to her. Captain! She had said Captain -something she never did! Kathryn looked at Chakotay and saw alarm in his eyes, then stood, told Chakotay he had the Bridge and started for her Ready Room. "Of course, follow me."
As the doors to her Ready Room hissed shut Kathryn turned to Jaimie and waited.
Jaimie walked past her a few steps, hesitated, and then taking a deep breath said, "Something has happened, Kathryn."
"What do you mean Jaimie? What has happened?" said Janeway with a very concerned look on her face. "Everything on the bridge was normal."
"A rift opened for a nanosecond."
"Rift?' she asked, yet knowing full well it meant a traveler. "Explain."
"A rift in space where Time Travelers enter. But it's more than that, the signature was 29th Century."
"Is that something to worry about? I remember you mentioning to Captain Gates that he would probably come and visit you sometime, that his curiosity would get the better of him."
"Yes," she said waving a hand, "But we had a pre-arranged signal for just a visit. Anything unannounced meant trouble and this is unannounced."
"What could it be?"
"I don't know, but based on when I saw the rift, Gates has probably parked above Voyager and is beaming down as we speak."
"You are correct, Jaimie," responded Captain Gates as he de-cloaked.
Jaimie stared at him. "What's happened Gates?"
"I'm afraid I have bad news, Jaimie."
Janeway quickly tapped her Com Badge. "Commander Chakotay, to my Ready Room!" Her tone was sharp and demanding.
"Right away, Captain."
As Chakotay came hurrying in and saw Gates, he started to smile then feeling the tension in the room frowned.
Jaimie, still staring at Gates asked, "Tell me Gates and don't hold back."
Gates looked at her, took a deep breath, then said, "I'm afraid Roman attempted a prison break two days ago and was killed in the attempt. Then the renegade Maquis cell immediately started reprisals. There was a big explosion at the Hospital. I'm afraid. . . . I'm afraid your son Chakotay and his wife were killed and Katelyn and Jeremiah critically injured. We have them in a private wing of the hospital under 24-hour care and guard."
Jaimie inhaled sharply and asked, "Kolobek and Hirato?"
"They were on missions, but have been sent the news, and are being transported back. The Maquis will undoubtedly try for them once they are back. I'm sorry Jaimie."
Jaimie turned to Kathryn and Chakotay who had been standing stunned by the news. "I have to go back," she said, her eyes hard.
Chakotay quickly stepped forward and enveloped her in his arms. "I'm so sorry, Jaimie," he whispered. "Kathryn and I both liked your son Chakotay very much."
Kathryn stepped over to Jaimie. "Go - we understand." Jaimie gave her a hug then said to Gates, "I just need time to change clothes," and left.
Gates looked at Kathryn and Chakotay. "Their cell isn't very large, but they are quite adept and devious in what they do."
"Will Jaimie be in danger?" asked Chakotay.
"Of course," replied Gates somberly, "But we will do everything in our power to protect her. Trouble is, Jaimie won't want protection - she'll just go full bore after them."
Just then Jaimie appeared in the room in her familiar traveling attire. Walking up to Kathryn and Chakotay she said, "I don't know when . . . or if . . . I'll ever be back. If anything happens to me I'll have Gates come and tell you personally." Then looking at Gates she placed her hand on her belt and said, "let's do it." Seconds before they disappeared she looked at Kathryn and Chakotay, smiled and said, "Take care of yourselves."
When Kathryn and Chakotay returned to the Bridge they announced that due to a problem, Jaime had gone back home.
Tom frowned. "That was pretty sudden. I hope everything will be okay."
"So do we Tom, so do we," said Kathryn and she sat in her chair, a very compassionate yet concerned look on her face.

A month later, Ensign Lopez, who had been transferred from Gamma shift to Jaimie's station, suddenly reported a fraction of a second glitch in space.
"What do you mean glitch?" asked Janeway.
"I'm not sure, Captain. Something showed and yet was gone so quickly I didn't have time to read it."
"Well, keep you eyes sharp, Ensign," said Janeway as she turned with a questioning look at Chakotay. A few minutes later Janeway felt a tug on her jacket. Looking down she saw nothing, then her jacket moved again as she felt yet another tug. Standing, she announced she was going to her Ready Room, asked Chakotay to join her and turned the Bridge over to Tuvok.
As the doors shut behind her, she looked around. Captain Gates de-cloaked and Kathryn's heart started to race and her hand flew to her mouth.
Gates nodded to both of them, started to speak, hesitated and looked at the floor.
"Captain?" said Kathryn in a soft, almost knowing voice.
He looked at her, anguish in his eyes. "Oh hell, there isn't any easy way to say this - Jaime was killed yesterday, but in the process not only saved Katelyn and Jeremiah from further injury, but killed or captured all the remaining members of the Maquis cell save one."
Both Kathryn and Chakotay sucked in their breath and then stood silently stunned and then they turned and placed their arms around each other, standing this way for several long minutes. Finally they turned and looked at Gates, their eyes glistening.
"Thank you for telling us, Captain," Janeway whispered. "I just find it hard to believe, she is such a survivor."
Gates just nodded his head and glanced at Chakotay who now stood clenching and unclenching his fists. He knew without a word that Chakotay's heart was breaking and yet filling with anger. "Bastards!" Chakotay finally spat out.
Kathryn slipped her hand in his, whether to offer solace or give herself time to maintain control on her own emotions, she herself wasn't sure.
Gates started to speak, stopped and cleared his throat, and then started again, "I'm sorry to have brought you such news, but I made a promise to Jaimie. It is also impossible for me to take you back for the ceremony tomorrow. That would put you two at risk and we can't have that." He again looked at the floor, looked at them then said softly, his voice heavy with emotion, "We are all going to miss her very much . . ."
"Yes, she was special," said Kathryn. "It was a privilege and an honor to have known her."
Gates just nodded. "Well, I have to get back, there is much going on. Just know that she loved you two very much - thought the world of you."
Both Kathryn and Chakotay remained silent for a moment, then as Chakotay placed his arm around Kathryn's shoulders he nodded and in a quiet voice replied, "Thank you for letting us know Captain Gates."
"Yes," added Kathryn, "You obviously have quite a situation at home. Thank you for taking time to come here."
Gates looked at them a moment, and then without another word his hand went to his belt and he was gone.
Kathryn and Chakotay continued to stand in place, totally shocked at this news. Finally turning to each other they hugged deeply and Chakotay choked out, "Let's not tell the crew just yet, Kathryn. I don't feel that strong right now."
"Agreed, Chakotay," Kathryn murmured and after taking a final moment to regain their composure, they returned to the Bridge.

It took three days before Kathryn made a ship-wide announcement to the crew that Jaimie had been killed. In the stunned silence that followed around the ship you could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Almost immediately Neelix set about turning the holodeck into a cheerful flower-laden festival to celebrate Jaimie's life, feeling it was not only appropriate because Jaime loved life and liked to laugh, but what she would prefer. The celebration lasted four hours, giving everyone a chance to make it for at least a little while.
When it was over, and even after the tears, stories and laughter, the crew's hearts were heavy - she had made an impression on everyone.

Five weeks later, Voyager was orbiting the planet Amian where for two days they had been acquiring supplies and making repairs. Janeway was on the Bridge while Chakotay had gone down to the planet, Tom was absentmindedly swiveling in his chair, Tuvok was in his usual business-like countenance and Ensign Lopez was studiously monitoring OPS.
"Chakotay to Janeway," suddenly broke the silence.
"Janeway here. No problems I hope, Commander."
"No Captain, I just wanted to report we have just about bought out the store as Jaimie would say, and . . . " then he suddenly went silent.
"Chakotay?" asked Janeway sitting erect in her chair.
"Sorry. I just realized what I said and it hit me kind of hard for a minute, Captain."
"Understood, Chakotay. But we can't ignore talking about her or saying her name. That wouldn't be natural and besides, I don't think she would want that."
"I know, Kathryn. It's just that I still can't get over it and find it hard to believe we've lost her."
Kathryn sighed. "I know. It still hurts doesn't it?" Then she looked up to find Tom staring at her. Suddenly realizing the Captain was looking at him, Tom blushed and turned around.
"Captain?" Chakotay called out.
"It's all right, Chakotay. We just had an eavesdropper is all." Then she laughed. "It was Tom."
"Tom is it? I might have known," said Chakotay with a small laugh of his own. Chakotay then finished his report and signed off. Janeway stood and walked over to Tom's side.
He looked up at her, blushed again and gave an embarrassed smile. "Sorry Captain. I didn't mean to be eavesdropping, but I miss her, too."
"Then double your efforts with Harry, like Jaimie was doing."
"Yes ma'am. Now?"
"Of course. We aren't busy at the moment. Go ahead."

A few days later, after dinner with Chakotay and while having quiet conversation and a follow up cup of tea on the sofa in Kathryn's quarters, she suddenly became quiet as she sat looking at Chakotay's profile. Her mind began to reflect back to the planet Aagon and the Cleansing and Unifying of the Spirit Ceremony she and Chakotay had gone through. She had never quite accepted the fact they were married in the eyes of that planet, but Chakotay had. Jaimie mentioned once it would take her awhile to accept it, but that eventually she would. Even now as she thought dreamily of that moment, she could feel the exhilarating yet peaceful and totally uplifting feeling that had come over her during the ceremony. But it wasn't only the ceremony itself. The soft and beautiful, almost hypnotic music, had also affected her greatly. It had seemed to penetrate deep into her soul. Suddenly she felt completely overflowing with love for Chakotay and moaned softly.
"Kathryn? . . . Kathryn!" called Chakotay.
"Oh! Yes, what is it Chakotay?"
"You moaned and your mind seemed a million miles away."
"More than that, Chakotay," she mused softly, almost to herself. Suddenly she placed her cup down and turned to him. "Chakotay, do you remember the planet Aagon and the . . ."
"Cleansing and Unifying Ceremony. Of course, it never leaves my mind - I think of it each time I look at you."
Reaching out she took hold of his hand, smiled softly, but didn't say a word.
Chakotay looked into her eyes and his heart started to race. "Kathryn?"
"Do you think we could set up a duplicate of that garden in the Holodeck?"
A soft smile started to play at his lips then spread across his whole face. "Better than that, Kathryn, if you are thinking what I hope you are thinking."
"I am, Chakotay," she said smiling, "and what could you do that would be better?"
"Set it up in our program of New Earth."
Those words caressed her mind and love for him exploded out of every pore in her body. "Perfect," she said quietly as she squeezed his hand.
They sat for a moment just looking at one another when the full realization of what had just taken place washed over them. Both reached out and wrapped their arms around the other and Chakotay moaned softly. "Oh Kathryn, I love you so much, you have no idea. You are my life!"
"And I love you, my dear one. I'm so sorry it has taken me so long . . ." Her words were stopped by Chakotay's lips as he gently kissed her.
Three days later, with help from B'Elanna and Harry, Chakotay had the program made. He nervously turned it on to see how close to the real thing, whether he and Kathryn had remembered everything, and as he entered the holodeck he took in a sharp breath. They had done it! It was beautiful and exact. Tapping his badge he asked Kathryn to come down.
Harry, now using a mobile bio chair started to leave, with B'Elanna also making the move. Chakotay asked them to stay and soon Kathryn joined them and stared in awe. "It's beautiful, Chakotay," she whispered. "It's exactly as I remember it," and then smiled at all three of them.
B'Elanna gave a big smile and said excitedly, "Set a date now, Captain!"
Chakotay and Kathryn looked at one another and both seemed to say at once, "Two days from now."
B'Elanna actually looked startled then smiled. "Well that was quick and unanimous, I must say."
Kathryn nodded her head as Chakotay said, "It was seven weeks ago that date, that Jaimie died," and Kathryn added, "She told us several times we would get married sometime, and I think that date is perfect."

The day arrived and the holodeck was teeming with festive and excited crewmembers. At the appointed time, Chakotay and Kathryn entered, both dressed in the same clothing they wore that day on the planet Aagon and Chakotay's smile indicated he was obviously quite happy. The crew hushed immediately and watched.
At the entry point Kathryn and Chakotay linked arms, stepped through the gate and onto the Celebrants Path, and walked towards the first Arch. Here, as previously prescribed, they joined hands and stepped through simultaneously and then continued their slow walk towards the Altar. Flower laden shrubs lined the walk on each side, their fragrance heavy, and a pure bubbling stream wound it's way beside the path, the sound adding a sense of calm peace.
Halfway to the Altar, B'Elanna stepped out and sprinkled the path ahead with petals of many colored flowers, handed Chakotay a single Red Rose then indicated for them to continue. As they neared the Altar, the music started, the same melodious, uplifting, yet soothing music they had heard on Aagon.
Upon reaching the Altar, White Rain, the Priest, waited and indicated for them to bow their heads as he started a soft, calm recitation of the words that Kathryn and Chakotay remembered from before. The combination of the words and the music brought an overwhelming feeling of peace and love spreading through Kathryn and she knew Chakotay was experiencing the same. When the words stopped, they both knelt and White Rain placed one hand on each of their shoulders, then with his right hand touched the area of the heart of Chakotay, moved his hand to over Kathryn's heart and back to Chakotay, then reversed the same hand movement from Kathryn to Chakotay and back, indicating the heart of each was being given to the other. From the heart he touched each forehead and nodded for Chakotay to pass the flower to Kathryn. She smiled and inhaled deeply of its fragrance. White Rain then placed his hands together, bowed his head and the only sound heard was the soothing music and the bubbling water of the stream.
After several moments White Rain raised his head, picked up a cup filled with pure water and handed it to Chakotay who took a sip, passed it to Kathryn for her sip and then the cup was returned to White Rain.
White Rain raised his face to the heavens and said, "Spirits, we ask your blessing on this man Commander Chakotay and this woman Captain Kathryn Janeway, who are here today to heal the soul, and cleanse and join their Spirits. Although they are closer to their far away place and strengthened by their circle of friends on this Starship Voyager, there are still many miles ahead as they embark on this part of their life's journey. We ask also your special blessing on this woman Kathryn, as women are the life givers of mother Earth." Again a moment of silence ensued, followed by White Rain motioning them to rise, join hands and move to Arch 2.
As they slowly walked to the next Arch Harry stepped out stiffly, and after regaining his balance and with a big smile, spread pure white flower petals on the path in front of them. After stepping through Arch 2, a waiting White Rain placed his hands together and as the music swelled his voice rose and was heard throughout the room, "Spirits, now with this music and my voice, I ask you to join this man and this woman, whose souls and spirits are now clean, to unify and entwine their love for each other to last through the ages," then bowed his head and again the only sound heard for the next minute was the harmonious and peaceful sound of the music. The crew stood stone silent and mesmerized by this ceremony.
When the music ended Kathryn and Chakotay walked on to Arch 3 and before stepping through Chakotay bent his head and kissed Kathryn, a gentle, slightly lingering kiss. As their lips parted he said, "I love you Kathryn" and she responded with "And I love you, Chakotay." Then they stepped through Arch 3, joined arms and headed for the exit gate. Once through they walked over to where Tuvok was standing and knelt down in front of him.
After a conventional Vulcan blessing, which was mercifully short, they gave their personal vows to each other and exchanged rings. Kathryn's was plain, her choice, with only a blue stone, but inside the band was engraved 'Your Angry Warrior' and the stardate. Chakotay's ring was a conventional wedding band, with the engraving inside saying, 'Yours Forever, Kathryn' and the stardate.
Rising, Kathryn, as she did on New Earth, held up her hand, palm out fingers spread and as Chakotay joined his hand with hers and their fingers entwined, they both broke out into big smiles, then Kathryn unexpectedly threw her arms around Chakotay in a big hug. No one heard what they said to each other in that moment but when they separated and turned and faced the crowd, well protocol be damned, the audience, her crew, burst out in cheers, whistles and clapping for several minutes.
Neelix bounded up on the stage and announced, "I have studied up on the weddings of Earth and discovered that the Bride and Groom must dance the first dance."
Chakotay and Kathryn smiled and walked up on the stage as Neelix called out for the computer to start the music. It was a slow romantic tune and sometimes they were cheek to cheek, sometimes their foreheads were together and sometimes they just dreamily looked into each other's eyes. When the music ended, Kathryn turned and seeing they were still the only ones dancing called out, "That's not fair, halfway through you people should have joined in!"
Tom called out, "No way, Captain, it was too much fun watching you two lovebirds. Besides, we had to see if Chakotay knew how to dance."
After the laughter subsided Neelix indicated for the happy couple to take their seats in the front row as they were going to have some entertainment. What followed kept Kathryn and Chakotay laughing so hard they were continually wiping tears from their eyes. Tom and B'Elanna did a parody on the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, Harry, playing his Clarinet, played the Wedding Song off key, Tuvok gave a rendition of the song Feelings in a dry emotionless voice and Seven, dressed as a Borg kept trying to assimilate the holographic Doctor.
At the end of the entertainment Kathryn and Chakotay looked lovingly at one another and then Chakotay said, "Jaimie would have been so proud to see this Kathryn"
"I know my love, I know," she said as she squeezed his hand, "But at least we have the consolation of knowing she knew our marriage was going to happen and even when."
Just then Jaimie appeared kneeling in front of them with tears streaming down her cheeks. Taking hold of both their hands she said, "I told you several times you would do it someday, and dead or not I wouldn't have missed this for the world."
Chakotay and Kathryn sat stunned, their mouths hanging open for several seconds before a chaotic scene of tears and hugs ensued for several minutes. The people nearby started saying "It's Jaimie!"; "Jaimie's here!"; "She's not dead!" and this spread like wildfire throughout the audience, until the cacophony of noise was almost deafening with everyone standing and craning their necks to try and see her.
Finally Jaimie broke from Kathryn and Chakotay and walked up on the stage. Cheers and shouts of "Great to see you, Jaimie" and "Welcome back from the dead!" greeted her. She smiled and held up her hands for silence, with everyone immediately becoming quiet.
"I guess I should explain my death," she said grinning. "I was critically injured in that firefight I assume you have heard about, and actually did 'die' twice, but as the Doctor finally told me, I must be the most stubborn woman in the Universe because every time he was about to declare me dead my heart would start fluttering again. The whole truth is I wasn't going to let dying make me miss this ceremony, so I guess I inherited some stubbornness," she said looking directly at Tom, who frowned not understanding what she meant.
"Anyway, once I made it, and knowing the remaining Maquis member had seen me carted out and rushed to the hospital, I concocted a plan to be dead." Looking down at Kathryn and Chakotay, who couldn't stop smiling seeing Jaimie alive, she said, "I'm sorry, but Gates coming to tell you was necessary to keep the circle closed and I guess he did a great acting job," to which Kathryn nodded her head. Looking back at the audience she continued, "Then they had this huge State Funeral for me . . . too bad I had to die to see that and hear some of the nice things they said about me," she muttered in one of her typical asides, which caused great laughter in the room, "and then when I was well enough to leave the hospital I disappeared. Even Gates didn't know my whereabouts."
"After a couple of months I finally succeeded in locating the lone survivor, captured him and he was brought to trial then imprisoned. Unfortunately for him, there were many prisoners who didn't care for him and he was mysteriously killed a few nights ago. This ended that Maquis Cell, but it is likely there are sympathizers."
Jaimie then looked down at Chakotay and Kathryn, who still had tears trickling down their cheeks. Quietly she added, "I won't be staying. I'm going back, but not to hunt down any sympathizers, but to somehow make peace and get Starfleet and Maquis together, just like what happened on Voyager."
The crew cheered at that and B'Elanna called out "If we can do it, why not the 29th Century!"
Jaimie smiled. "Why not indeed, B'Elanna, and all I can say is I will do my darnedest."
She then walked off the stage and down to Kathryn and Chakotay, knelt once more in front of them and took hold of their hands. "I don't know if you two will ever see me again, but know that I love you both and will be thinking of you everyday." Rising she kissed each on the cheek and followed this by placing her hands gently on their faces, stood tall and looked out at the assemblage, smiled and raised her hand in farewell to them.
She then turned to Tom, and almost as if she couldn't help herself, gave him a mischievous smile and quickly swiped the hair away from her forehead, thus revealing a Tattoo, and then winked at Tom as the hair flopped back. Tom's mouth dropped open as he sat stunned. Breaking into a laugh Jaimie glanced down at her 11th Great Grandparents who sat with looks of amazement, then leaned forward and whispered in their ears, "The tattoo is real and appropriate now, but," and she grinned, "just tell Tom I had it painted on as a joke for him."
"You are too much Jaimie," said Kathryn giggling, "One parting shot, eh?"
"Couldn't resist," said Jaimie who then rose smiling. Suddenly her face was very serious and she stood looking at them for several moments as if indelibly imprinting their countenances in her memory. Finally in an emotion filled voice said very softly, "You are special people, I will never forget you - long life, health and happiness to you and yours. I love you both," then she was gone.
* * *
Later in their 'new' quarters, new in that the crew had knocked out the wall separating their individual quarters earlier in the day, Kathryn and Chakotay sat holding hands. Chakotay looked at his bride and smiled. "What a day this has been, to get married to the woman I so dearly love and then find out our Jaimie is alive. I just wish she wouldn't have had to go back and could have stayed a couple of days. Somehow I have the feeling we will never see her again."
Kathryn nodded. "For some reason I feel the same way, sweetheart. But in reality we should never have known she existed. When she chose to make herself known to us and also disclosed our legacy, she made a momentous decision." Kathryn then giggled as she added, "One of many transgressions, but the most important one I feel overwhelmed knowing what we leave to the future."
"Agreed, but at the same time, my love, I feel very proud, especially if they are all like Jaimie and her family," said Chakotay.
"Yes, murmured Kathryn looking at him. "They were all such wonderful people."
Chakotay smiled, stood and extended a hand to Kathryn. She grasped his hand and stood, and as Chakotay put his arms around her he bent his head and whispered in her ear, "I think it's time we started on that legacy, don't you?"
Kathryn pulled her head back and looked at him, then a mischievous smile spread on her face. "And for some reason, my darling, I don't think it's going to take long."
Smiling and with their arms around the other's waist, they headed for the bedroom with Chakotay's answer of "Not long at all sweetheart, not long at all."
