The Jaimie Series - Part 3

Something I Forgot

by Dee Price

Jaimie peered cautiously around the corner of the building and phaser fire immediately lit up the night sky. She instinctively ducked her head and pulled back. "Blast! They are zeroing in on my position and I can't cloak." An earlier shot had struck the belt, effectively putting it out of commission, both a blessing in that it had probably saved her life, and now a problem because she couldn't cloak or transport to her ship. Well she had to think of something and fast. That last phaser had almost singed her hair. Looking around she tried to plot a retreat from this position. She could sure use some help right now, but from where eluded her. Even Q would be a welcome sight at this moment. Where was Q anyway? She had suddenly popped up two hours ago, then smiled sweetly and said she'd be gone for a little while.

Silently Jaimie crept to the other end of the building and peered into the night. Her darting eyes caught movement to the right! Well, they were here, too. This was turning into a worst-case scenario, stuck here and her ship on the edge of town. Gates had told her this particular assignment was dangerous, but she'd just smiled, as she'd always managed before. What irony, the possibility of dying on a strange planet and the wrong century!

Just then a black cloud moved in front of the face of the moon, immediately and very effectively darkening the area. Jaimie, feeling this was her only chance, reacted instantly and sprinted for the trees fifty yards away. Halfway there she was spotted and phaser fire danced her way.

"Another few steps and I'll be . . ."

She fell heavily, her face smashing into the dirt, with her momentum causing her to slide several more feet. At last she laid still, a soft moan emanating from her lips from the searing pain in her side and chest wall.

Captain Janeway was relaxing in her Ready Room with a cup of tea. Everything had been quiet for three days now and she was catching up on all her reports. Chakotay had the Bridge and B'Elanna had almost all repairs completed. In short, it was almost boring.

Her door chimed. "Come" she called out, and Commander Chakotay entered.

"The last report, Kathryn, from Tuvok."

She smiled at Chakotay as she reached for the Padd. "Any problems I should be enlightened about?"

"None at all. Everything is moving along quite smoothly."

"Good, we could all use some quiet time."

At that moment Tuvok hailed from the Bridge. "Captain, Ensign Kim is reporting long range sensors show we are coming up on an M Class planet."

"How soon will we be there, Mr.Tuvok?"

"Checking. In 0.53.5 minutes, Captain. And it does appear to be advanced enough for warp capability."

"Keep me posted, Tuvok. Janeway out." Then glancing at Chakotay, she added, "Hopefully we can also give the crew some R&R here. It's been awhile."

The pain in Jaimie's chest was now intense. She had been pulling and dragging her body a few feet at a time, which increased the pain, but she gritted her teeth and forced herself to keep moving. Just a few more feet and she would be in the trees and that hope kept her going, knowing survival training would then help her elude her tormentors. So far they had not found her, as the night had stayed exceptionally black. Finally reaching the trees, she used a low branch to first get to her knees and then after struggling to her feet started stumbling and weaving in the general direction of her ship. If she could just make it there she would be all right. After only a few steps a wave of dizziness swept over her, caused no doubt by the loss of a lot of blood.

"Just hold on old lady," she mumbled, but suddenly her face was in the ground and her mouth full of dirt. She was acutely aware of a black window slowly closing down her mind.

Janeway looked closely at the view screen. Sensors were now showing the planet and they had been hailed from the surface. After making some adjustments on his console, Ensign Kim said, "All right Captain, I have cleared up the interference."

"On screen."

The visage of a humanoid female appeared, smiled, and said, "I am Zayla of the planet Aagot. To whom am I speaking?"

Kathryn smiled and replied, "I am Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager. We are on our way home and wonder if we might visit your planet?"

Zayla nodded. "We welcome all visitors to our world Captain Janeway. Perhaps we may also conduct business in the matter of supplies or repairs?"

Janeway nodded in agreement. "That sounds promising Zayla as we are in need. May we send down an away team to appraise what you may have to offer?"

Again Zayla nodded and said, "We will give you the coordinates," and the screen went dark.

"Harry?" asked Janeway as she turned to face him.

Harry studied his console a moment, and then looked up with a smile. "Got them, Captain."

Janeway then turned to Tuvok. "Mr. Tuvok, take B'Elanna and Neelix, plus a security team, and beam down to take a look."

"Acknowledged," and Tuvok left the Bridge while at the same time contacting B'Elanna.

Kathryn turned to Chakotay. "Zayla seemed pleasant enough. Let's hope looks are not deceiving."

Thirty minutes later Tuvok beamed back to the bridge. "B'Elanna is bartering for her supplies and Neelix is obtaining the needed fresh fruits and vegetables, Captain. It appears to be a very hospitable planet. As you have previously mentioned repairs, might I suggest other members of the crew be given some time on the planet."

Kathryn smiled. "You have read my mind, Tuvok. Chakotay, let's adjourn to my Ready Room and make up the crew's rotation. You have the Bridge Mr. Tuvok."

"May I also suggest, Captain, that you and the Commander be in the first group? You have not had any rest for sometime and are both as needy as anyone else."

Janeway stopped and looked at Tuvok. "Are you suggesting we're a little worse for wear, Tuvok?" Then laughing, she waved her hand and said, "We will consider it."

After entering the Ready Room Janeway sat at her desk, with Chakotay in the chair across from her. "Who do you think should be in the first group, Chakotay?"

Before he could answer he was interrupted by the appearance of the female Q.

"Captain, Commander, quick. You've got to come with me right now!" she exclaimed in a very agitated state.

"Q! What do you mean come with you?" asked Janeway.

"You've got to come right now. Jaimie needs help!"

"What help?" asked Kathryn. What has happened?"

"She's dying, if she's not already dead!"

Chakotay jumped to his feet. "What do you mean dying?"

"Just that. She's dying and she doesn't want to die here. She wants to get to her ship so she can go home to die! Please! Please help her."

"Dying! Where is she?" yelled Chakotay grabbing hold of Q's arms.

"She's laying in some bushes. I found her a minute ago. She's been shot and can't get to her ship. She needs your help."

"Calm down, Q," said Kathryn. "Why couldn't you get her to her ship with your powers?"

"Oh'" said Q momentarily faltering. "I guess I was afraid of not doing it right or maybe I forgot because I was so scared for Jaimie. Besides she asked for you guys."

"She asked for us?" said Janeway incredulously.

"Yes. Please come . . . please! We can't let her die! I can get you there, really I can."

"I'm going, Kathryn," said Chakotay. "Come on, Q, take me to her!"

"Now wait a minute, Chakotay. Let's think about this," said Kathryn.

"There's nothing to think about Kathryn! She needs us or me - now!"

"But what about the ship?"

"All we are going to do is take her to her ship. Isn't that what you said Q?"

"Yes, she needs to get to her ship so she can go home. Please let's go!" and without waiting for their approval snapped her fingers.

All three appeared in a dense forest. "She's over here," whispered Q and moved quickly to a pile of leaves and branches. Pulling then quickly away, Jaimie's body was seen.

Chakotay quickly bent down on one knee. "Jaimie . . . Jaimie! It's Chakotay. Can you hear me?"

Kathryn, kneeling on the other side, felt her neck. "I can barely feel a pulse Chakotay, and she's cold, she's going into shock." Kathryn then saw all the blood. "Oh my," she said softly.

Suddenly Jaimie stirred and her eyes fluttered opened. Pain clouded her eyes as she looked up. "Chakotay?"

"Yes, Jaimie. I'm here."

She smiled as she looked up into Chakotay's face. "My hero." She mumbled.

"Where's your ship, Jaimie," asked Kathryn.

"Kathryn? You're here, too?" Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Yes, now where's your ship and why can't you use your belt?" At that moment she glanced down and saw the answer to her question. "Oh, I see."

"My ship - hundred yards - SE. Help me . . . get there. . . . don't want to die here."

Meanwhile, Chakotay had been examining the wound. Glancing up at Kathryn, he frowned and shook his head. Kathryn's eyes widened in alarm at the implication.

"We'll get you to your ship right now, Jaimie," said Kathryn. Chakotay gently slipped his arms under her shoulders and legs and lifted her up, almost falling down as one foot slid on the bloody leafs as he stood. Jaimie groaned at the movement of her body.

A short time later they found the ship. "How do you get the door open, Jaimie?" asked Kathryn as she felt around the fuselage for a latch.

"Voice command, Kathryn. 'Open sesame'," she said weakly. Nothing happened.

"Your voice is so weak it's not being recognized," said Kathryn.

"Open sesame," Jaimie said in a louder voice, then immediately started moaning and coughing from the effort.

It was loud enough as with a hiss of air the door dropped down. Chakotay quickly walked in, followed by Kathryn and Q, and moved to the command seat. However, he saw at once it would be difficult to place Jaimie in the chair.

"I need your help, Kathryn."

Kathryn quickly moved up beside him and then said, "She's unconscious, Chakotay. How's she going to fly this ship?" Both looked at one another and then Chakotay stepped back and gently laid Jaimie on the floor. Kathryn sat down beside her and slipped her leg under Jaimie's head and looked questioningly at Chakotay, then Q.

"Q, do you know how to operate this ship?"

"No, Captain, and I hear some people coming. They are still looking for Jaimie, so I'll go out and distract them. Good luck." With that she walked out and said "Close sesame," and the door hissed shut. "It worked," she said gleefully and then hustled off in the direction of the voices.

Jaimie stirred, then groaned. "Where am I?"

"In your ship, Jaimie," Kathryn answered quietly. "How do you fly it?"

"Voice commands mainly, with a few sets," she said so softly she could barely be heard. "Help me to the seat." As she tried to move, she collapsed back in pain and gave a sharp groan. "Guess I'm getting old, Kathryn. I can't seem to get up." Then her head fell to one side as she lost consciousness.

Kathryn quickly reached over and checked her pulse, then looked up with horror in her eyes. "I'm not getting a pulse, Chakotay!"

Chakotay looked back. "Do something and keep her alive, Kathryn! I don't have a clue how to fly this ship!" he said as he looked down on the panel.

Kathryn started calling Jaimie's name and patting her cheek. Jaimie's eyes fluttered, then opened and Kathryn said quickly, "Jaimie, we need your help to fly this ship."

Jaimie then asked Kathryn to help her sit upright. After a painful effort, she was reasonably straight as she leaned into Kathryn's chest, then with an agonizing groan started to slide sideways before Kathryn caught her.

"I can't do it," she said gasping in pain. "You'll have to take me back." Her voice was barely a whisper and Kathryn put her ear to Jaimie's lips. "I can get the computer to recognize Chakotay's voice and help him with the sets, but that's about all I'm good for. I'm sorry," and her voice trailed away.

Kathryn and Chakotay looked at one another. Go to the 29th Century? What about Voyager?

Chakotay knew what they were both thinking. "I'll take her, Kathryn. You go back to the ship," he said firmly.

Kathryn looked down at Jaimie, who had again passed out. It was obvious she was going to need both their help. She began shaking Jaimie until she was conscious enough to understand.

"How long will it take us to get there?"

"Not long," came the weak reply.

"Then we'll both take you home, Jaimie," said Kathryn making the decision. Chakotay smiled and asked Jaimie how to get started.

"Computer," said Jaimie, raising her voice.

"Voice not recognized. Is this Jaimie?" came the reply.

"Injured," groaned Jaimie. "Need you to recognize Commander Chakotay's voice."

"Understood, but who is Commander Chakotay? That name is not in my memory bank."

"24th Century Starfleet, you oaf!" said Jaimie, breaking into more coughing from the exertion of raising her voice. "Chakotay, say your name for the computer."

"I'm Commander Chakotay," he said in a strong, firm voice.

Silence followed and after what seemed forever, the computer responded.

"Commander Chakotay's voice recognized . . . but are you sure about this Jaimie?"

"Yes, he has to take me back home," and then Jaimie closed her eyes.

"Understood. What are your orders Commander Chakotay?"

Chakotay looked back at Jaimie, then Kathryn. "Keep her conscious, Kathryn, or else who knows where we'll end up."

Kathryn prodded Jaimie to guide Chakotay, having to say it several times to make it register on Jaimie's faltering mind. Finally Jaimie understood.

"Say Red 58, White 29, Blue 15, then press the yellow Y panel."

Chakotay repeated the instructions, pressed the panel and a soft hum began. "What next, Jaimie?" Chakotay called out.

"Portal 47, R2D2."

At this both Kathryn and Chakotay looked at Jaimie. Jaimie opened her eyes when she didn't hear the command, then smiled weakly. "What can I say? The inventor was a fan of 20th Century Earth's Star War films."

Chakotay smiled and repeated the commands. The ship gently lifted off the ground. Chakotay was then told to touch the Warp panel, repeat Portal 47, but add NW 29 and Engage. At those commands the ship shot up into the air.

"What now, Jaimie?" he said. "We're off the ground – in fact we're already entering orbit."

But Jaimie was again unconscious. Kathryn again checked her pulse and her face showed grave concern. Chakotay, looking back, called out "You've got to keep her conscious, Kathryn. We have to go through the portal and I'm not sure she has given us all the commands!"

Kathryn again went through the ritual of prodding Jaimie to a semi-conscious state. "Jaimie, stay with us."

Jaimie grimaced and opened her eyes. "What?" she asked weakly.

"We're in the air, Jaimie. What now?" yelled Chakotay.

Jaimie attempted to answer but her voice was so weak even Kathryn holding her, didn't hear. "Say it again, Jaimie," prompted Kathryn as she put her ear to Jaimie's lips.

"Tell computer to Auto ride Portal 1 and she'll take you through the Time Rift."

Kathryn repeated the instructions, Chakotay turned back, took a deep breath and hoping the directions Jaimie gave were right said, "Computer, Auto ride Portal 1."

"Understood, Commander. Auto ride Portal 1. Do you wish me to take you through the Time Rift without further instructions?"

"Yes, Computer," said Chakotay expelling a big breath. "Take us home."

"Understood. You are more polite . . ."

"We don't have time for this. I'm depending on you to get us home – we have to save Jaimie!" said Chakotay rather sharply.

"Understood. Time Portal 1 now on screen. Moving to warp 15SS."

A white line appeared on the screen and suddenly the ship shot forward. In the blink of an eye Chakotay saw a difference in space. Turning to look back at Kathryn he asked, "How is she?"

Kathryn shook her head. "I'm having trouble finding a pulse. Where are we?"

"Obviously not in the Delta Quadrant."

"Can you read anything on the panel?"

Chakotay looked at everything. "On one panel there's a bunch of numbers rolling by so fast I can't read them, and I don't dare touch anything. Other than that I don't know where the hell we are!"

"Well, let's just hope we end up in the 29th Century and the right quadrant."

Chakotay noticed his breathing had become rapid and felt his heart racing. Calm down he told himself. Everything will be all right.

Suddenly the ship slowed and the computer said, "Entry complete."

"Thank you, but where are we?"

"You have entered Portal 1, NW 29."

"What the hell does that mean, computer?"

"You are home now, Commander. The base should contact you soon."

"Home?" asked Kathryn.

"Home?" repeated Chakotay.

"You have successfully entered the 29th Century."

"Oh," they echoed, almost with a tinge of disappointment in their voices.

Space started turning from black to a brilliant shade of blue. A planet appeared ahead that looked exactly like Earth. Suddenly a man's face appeared on the View Screen.

"Voyager 2, welcome back! Hey, Jaimie, you're overdue. We were worried about you."

Chakotay moved in front of the View Screen and looked at the man.

"Hey!" he said, "You're not Jaimie! Where is she and what are you doing in her ship?"

"I'm Commander . . . "

"Oh my God," exclaimed the man, "You're Commander Chakotay of the Starship Voyager!"

"How do you know my name?" asked Chakotay frowning.

The man smiled, then almost laughed. "How do I know you're name? I've studied you, Commander. You're my hero!"

"Look, that's all beside the point right now."

"Yes sir. Where's Jaimie?"

"Jaimie is critically wounded, dying, and we have brought her back. She needs immediate medical assistance, but I need help to land this ship. What did you call it . . . Voyager 2?"

The man nodded, then asked Chakotay to move aside so he could see the interior. "Ah yes, I see Jaimie on the floor, and that's . . . my God, Captain Janeway, too!"

"That's right," responded Kathryn, "But please, if you will, Jaimie needs help and right now!"

"Hold on."

A Lieutenant moved into view. "Ah, Commander Chakotay, Captain Janeway, welcome to the 29th Century. I'll help you dock Commander. First of all we have to get you down to impulse, so do the following."

Chakotay followed the Lt.'s instructions and the ship immediately dropped to Impulse.

"All right, now just relax Commander, we can bring you in with a Transport Guide. Release the Computer from Auto ride."

"How do I do that?"

"Just say it, Commander."

"All right. Computer, release Auto ride."

"Auto ride, released," came the monotone response.

Chakotay immediately felt the ships subtle change. Then - a jolt.

"We are locked on now Commander. We will bring you into Dock 47. Just sit back, and we will have Medical Assistance standing by."

Chakotay leaned back and took a deep breath, slowly expelling it before he turned and rising to his feet walked back to Kathryn and Jaimie. Kneeling down he asked, "How is she? Any change."

"None. She hasn't regained consciousness since her instructions on Auto ride, nor have I felt her pulse. Her breathing is getting shallow, too - I'm afraid, Chakotay."

After a short period of time they felt the ship change position. Chakotay stood to look out the View Screen and said, "I see buildings, Kathryn. We're gliding towards a large one and now we're going through some doors. Looks like we're going to set down on one of the pads." As he said that the ship rocked gently, then was still.

"Commander Chakotay?"

Chakotay went forward and sat in the chair. "Yes?"

"Please remain in the ship. We will enter and retrieve Jaimie, but it is imperative you not make any moves. Understood?"

"Understood, but we are not dangerous, if that's what you're implying."

"Not at all, Commander, but you are in a different Century."

Chakotay smiled. "Understood."

Suddenly the door hissed open and a young Ensign quickly entered pointing a Phaser Rifle at them, looked around, then nodded to someone outside the ship. "All clear, Doc."

Two men with medical insignia entered, knelt by Jaimie, placed her on a mobile bio cot and quickly exited the ship. The Ensign, with his Phaser Rifle still pointing at them backed towards the door. With an embarrassed grin he said, "Sorry sirs. Orders." With that he left and the door immediately hissed shut.

"Their diplomacy here isn't much better than the Delta Quadrant," smiled Kathryn as she moved forward to sit in the other seat. She looked at the control panel and shook her head. "It's similar, yet so different." She then peered out the window, but could not see anything in that direction except another ship so looked at Chakotay and smiled.

"Although we can't tell, we are in the 29th century Chakotay. I wonder if they will allow us to see anything?"

"Probably not, Kathryn. Might break some Temporal Directive if we do," and then the two sat and quietly waited.

After what seemed an endless amount of time, but in reality was only 20 minutes, the doors opened and a Captain strode briskly into the ship and his countenance was furrowed with a deep frown. Upon seeing the two he smiled, his eyes almost danced and as he extended his hand he nodded his head

"Captain Janeway, Commander Chakotay, welcome to the 29th Century. I'm Captain Gates, Jaimie's superior officer. First I thank you for bringing Jaimie home and I must also apologize for the seemingly rude reception you received, but we had to get Jaime to the Medical Center, then a brief conference was needed regarding your appearance in our century, followed by some arrangements . . . befitting your arrival," he said as he smiled again.

From Jaimie's previous discussion of Gates, Kathryn expected to see a grumpy old man, but he was around her age, maybe a little older, tall, with brown skin, eyes and hair – and actually quite handsome.

"How is Jaimie, Captain?" Kathryn quickly asked as she stood.

"Yes," Chakotay added. "We are very worried about her. Is she going to make it?"

Captain Gates pursed his lips. "Haven't heard anything as yet. It's a bit early I think, but you know the old saying, 'No news is good news'." Then he smiled. "I suppose you have heard of me from Jaimie."

"Yes, Captain," replied Kathryn. "Jaimie has often mentioned you."

He grimaced. "I'm sure she has."

"Oh no, I assure you, it was nothing bad," exclaimed Kathryn as her face flushed. "In fact they were rather amusing incidents."

"If we had time I would like to hear about these 'incidents' as you term it. But for now I have orders to take you to the Admiral's office. If you will, please," and he extended his hand towards the door.

Kathryn and Chakotay walked to the door. What they saw caused both of them to stop suddenly and Kathryn emitted an involuntarily gasp. From the ship to the building doors were two rows of Starfleet personnel, all standing with eyes toward the ship. Janeway turned to look at Captain Gates, who smiled and said, "As I previously stated, some arrangements were made befitting your arrival."

Gates then walked down the ramp, stopping at the bottom as Janeway and Chakotay moved up beside him. From somewhere a sharp command of "Attention!" rang out and both rows became ramrod stiff with a simultaneous clicking of heels. Again a call rang out. "Present Arms!" and Sabers were extended from both sides, forming an arch.

Captain Gates smiled at the two, as they stared with mouths open, said, "Let's go," and then started a slow walk down the rows, with Janeway and Chakotay in complete awe beside him. "Chakotay," whispered Kathryn, "This gives me chills."

"Me, too, with extra-large goose bumps!" he whispered back.

As they walked toward the doors, Kathryn couldn't help noticing some of the personnel sneaking looks at them and smiling shyly. Most of the faces seemed young and she surmised those were cadets. She smiled and nodded. At one point she noted a Cadet with tears on her cheeks and glanced questioningly at Captain Gates, hoping he would explain. However, his eyes were focused straight ahead.

Upon reaching the doors they automatically and silently swung open, and again as far as could be seen, were two rows of Starfleet Personnel and Cadets. Upon entering a turbolift, Gates smiled and said, "I think you will understand this formality in a few moments. But it accounts a little for the delay. I don't think anyone on this base has moved so fast for years," he said with a deep chuckle.

The turbo stopped and the doors opened. Again two rows of Starfleet personnel extended down the corridor. Kathryn and Chakotay felt absolutely spellbound and awed by all this attention.

Finally Gates stopped at a door, opened it and indicated for Kathryn and Chakotay to enter. Inside, an Ensign stiffened straight as a board at a desk.

"Is the Admiral ready, Ensign?" asked Gates.

"Yes sir, you are to go right in with our guests," she said, then couldn't suppress a smile.

Gates ushered them into the room. "Admiral Kappa, I have our guests."

A white-haired man standing behind the desk smiled broadly and moved towards them, offering his hand first to Kathryn. "Welcome! Welcome to both of you. It is indeed a pleasure to meet you Captain Janeway." Turning to Chakotay he extended his hand, "Commander Chakotay, an honor, sir." Indicating two chairs for them to sit, he took his seat behind the desk, while Captain Gates stood to one side.

"I realize you must be in shock at the moment, however, I must thank you for returning Jaimie to us. We certainly don't like to lose any of our Time Travelers to another Century."

Finding she could finally speak and disregarding any protocol that might have been called for Kathryn asked, "Please Admiral, how is Jaimie?"

Immediately the Admiral pushed a button on his console. "Any word on our Jaimie, Ensign?"

Kathryn couldn't help smiling and looked at Chakotay. Jaimie had said everyone including the Admiral called her Jaimie.

"No word as yet, Admiral. Do you wish me to make an inquiry?"

"If you would, please."

"Right away, Admiral."

Turning back to Janeway and Chakotay he said, "We shall find out shortly. She's a tough old gal and has survived more mishaps than I care to count. Starfleet wouldn't be the same without Jaimie – taught me everything I know and Captain Gates as well."

Gates smiled as he added, "Jaimie has taught most of us." Then he grinned as he saw the surprised expressions. "Jaimie holds her age well," he said then laughed as he added in a joking tone, "Must be her cheery disposition." Janeway and Chakotay couldn't help smiling at that.

The Admiral then addressed Captain Gates. "Captain, are we able to make arrangements for Captain Janeway and the Commander's trip back?"

"No sir. The only other 'Timer' just went out yesterday and isn't expected back for sometime."

The Admiral sighed but smiled as he turned back to Kathryn and Chakotay. "Well, it looks like you will be our guests for awhile."

"With all due respect sir, we must get back to Voyager. As mind boggling as this is to be in the 29th Century, Voyager is probably searching for us now," said a concerned Kathryn.

"Not to worry, Captain," replied the Admiral as he glanced at Gates. "Everything will work out, I assure you." The Admiral then tapped his console again. "Ensign, have our two Lieutenants arrived yet?"

"Yes sir. They just came in."

"Excellent!" Then nodding to Captain Gates, "Will you get them Captain and escort them in here." Captain Gates immediately left the room.

"We have a surprise for you Captain, Commander. I don't think we could have kept this from you, so we are not even going to try."

Puzzled, Kathryn and Chakotay looked at each other.

Then Captain Gates re-entered the room. The Admiral stood and said, "Captain Janeway, Commander Chakotay, I'd like you to meet someone."

Kathryn and Chakotay stood and turned towards the door. What they saw caused them both to stare wide-eyed and in utter astonishment. Both Lieutenants had Chakotay's tattoo on their foreheads!

Captain Gates smiled broadly upon seeing their reaction and as he looked at Chakotay said, "I'd like you to meet Jeremiah and Katelyn," then he paused a beat before adding – "your 13th Great Grandchildren."

Chakotay's mouth dropped open, and then Kathryn upon realizing she'd felt keen disappointment at this news, turned to Chakotay and said, "It looks like congratulations are in order for you Chakotay."

"Excuse me," Gates quickly said. "I wasn't specific enough it seems. Captain Janeway these are your Great Grandchildren as well."

Kathryn stared and her heart started pounding. "Mine . . . ?" She looked closely and saw that Jeremiah had her eyes and facial features, while Katelyn seemed to be the spitting image of Chakotay with soft, brown eyes and dark hair. Both smiled broadly and took a tentative step forward and then stopped.

Finally Jeremiah broke the silence. "This is fantastic! Who would have ever dreamed we would actually get to meet you two face-to-face!" he exclaimed.

Katelyn joined in, bubbling with excitement. "Grandma has told us so much about you!"

Chakotay was the first to react as Kathryn continued to stand in shock. Chakotay looked first at Admiral Kappa, then Captain Gates. "Wait a minute. Are you saying . . . ?"

Gates continued to smile broadly while nodding his head. "Yes Commander. You and Captain Janeway eventually marry and have children. Jeremiah and Katelyn are two of your descendents."

Chakotay stared at Gates, still feeling thunder-struck by this news. His mouth opened and closed several times without a sound being emitted as his mind whirled.

Chakotay suddenly asked, "Jaimie?"

"Jaimie is Jeremiah and Katelyn's Grandmother - your 11th Great Grandchild."

Chakotay turned to Kathryn as tears of pure joy began streaming down his cheeks. She was still standing with her mouth agape. Placing a hand on her shoulder he whispered, "Kathryn."

She turned and looked at him and the realization of what she had just heard finally sunk in. She had gone from thinking Chakotay had married and they were now meeting his descendants, to being told these were she and Chakotay's descendants!

Briefly her hand went to her mouth, and then as her eyes became moist she said, "Oh, Chakotay. I had begun to think that could never happen with us." With that they wrapped their arms around each other and stood in this silent embrace while tears were silently shed throughout the room, as the enormity of this situation had even affected the Admiral and Captain.

Finally Kathryn broke the embrace, touched Chakotay's face gently with her fingertips, then turned and looked at Jeremiah and Katelyn.

"Well, don't your Grandparents get a hug?" she asked, and both literally flew at Chakotay and Kathryn.

The Admiral's console chirped at that point. "Yes?" called out the Admiral.

"Admiral, the hospital just reported on Jaimie. Seems it's really bad - touch and go. But Jaimie's putting up one hell of a fight and . . . oh, excuse me sir, Jaimie is . . ."

"Never mind, Ensign," came the Admiral's response. "Your first statement said it all." Turning he looked at Jeremiah and Katelyn. "How about the two of you escorting our guests over to the hospital? Captain Gates and I have some business to discuss."

Jeremiah immediately stepped to Kathryn and offered his arm, while Katelyn, with a large smile, moved to Chakotay and took hold of his arm.

All four talked animatedly as they walked through the building. Exiting a door, Jeremiah procured what looked like a board to Kathryn, and then held her arm as they stepped on, with Chakotay and Katelyn following suit. Two sidebars slowly extended to waist high and Kathryn and Chakotay were instructed to hang on.

"I don't want to lose my Great Grandparents off the Hover Board," laughed Jeremiah.

"You would never live that down," Katelyn said.

Slowly the board began to hum and lift off the ground, stopping at about two feet in the air. When Jeremiah was sure everyone was secure, he touched a button with his foot and the board began moving forward, slowly at first and gradually gaining speed as Jeremiah saw Kathryn and Chakotay enjoying this mode of travel. Moments later the board settled to the ground and all stepped off.

"That was marvelous," enthused Kathryn as she looked at the board.

"I somehow think you would like living in the 29th Century, Kathryn," laughed Chakotay.

They entered the Medical Center and walked down a corridor, took a turbo and shortly entered a room.

Jeremiah called out, "Dad, how is Grandma?"

A Doctor standing at a bio-bed with his back to them turned around. Again Kathryn and Chakotay stood in shock.

Katelyn laughed delightedly and said, "We wanted to surprise you. Dad . . . this is Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay."

Kathryn's hand went to her chest and she gasped, "Does everyone around here wear a tattoo?"

"Only your descendents," laughed the Doctor. "I'm Jaimie's son and the proud bearer of your name, sir. I'm Doctor Chakotay."

Chakotay stammered out, "I feel like I'm looking in a mirror."

Kathryn smiled. "Your tattoo seems to be quite a trademark, Chakotay."

"It appears so," and then overcoming his shock, he stepped forward and gave Doctor Chakotay a big hug.

Kathryn, after also hugging him, moved to Jaimie's bedside. She lay there deathly still and as white as the sheet that covered her. Looking up Kathryn asked, "How is she, Doctor? Bottom line."

Shaking his head he said, "Bottom line - very iffy. We almost lost her once, but mother is quite a fighter" Glancing at his tri-corder he added, "What is amazing is that her vital signs have improved just since you two entered the room. It's as if she knows you're here!"

Kathryn took hold of Jamie's hand. "Fight, Jaimie - fight harder. That's not only an order, but I have a lot a questions for you young lady!"

Dr. Chakotay, Jeremiah and Katelyn all burst out laughing, while Chakotay placed his arm around Kathryn's shoulders. "Knowing you, Kathryn, I'm quite sure you do."

Whether caused by the laughter or talking, Jaimie suddenly groaned and her eyes slowly opened. "Can't keep a good woman down," she whispered in a very weak voice. Then her eyes closed and she again lapsed back into an unconscious state.

Doctor Chakotay smiled, threw his hands up in the air in happiness and said, "She's fighting – she's not giving up!" Then somberly he added, "Seriously, I do believe now, that she will somehow pull through. All her signs are improving."

"Thank God for that," said Chakotay, which was immediately echoed by everyone else.

* * *

Kathryn and Chakotay stood outside Jaimie's room. Jeremiah and Katelyn had gone off to procure a place for them to stay and the Doctor was tending to another patient. They felt awkward with each other in light of the astounding events that had unfolded. Finally Kathryn looked at Chakotay. He was watching her and smiled as she glanced at him.

"What is it, Kathryn?"

"I'm just a little stunned by what we have found out, Chakotay," she answered quietly and then glanced down the corridor.

He reached out and took hold of her hand. "Are you sorry, Kathryn?"

Quickly she looked back at him, her eyes wide. "Oh no, Chakotay! I'm not sorry – really." Her free hand reached up to his cheek. "It's just that . . ."

Chakotay looked deep into her eyes. "I love you, Kathryn, more than words could ever express. I have loved you since the moment you showed on my view screen that first time at the Caretaker. It feels wonderful to be able to say it out loud," he said, his voice soft and caring. "Besides, you have known I've felt this way based on . . ."

"I know Chakotay," Kathryn interrupted. "It's just that I have held you at arms distance for over four years, even on New Earth, and now suddenly to find out we get married and have children . . ." and she raised both arms and left them drop weakly to her side.

Chakotay smiled warmly. "I know, and I think it's the most wonderful news I could ever expect to hear." Then he looked intently at her face. "But why does it disturb you?"

"I just keep wondering when it happens. Do we get back to the Alpha Quadrant soon? Does something happen that makes me change my mind about the integrity of the command structure" There are just so many unanswered questions running through my mind at the moment."

"Why must you question," he asked with a tinge of irritation "You still won't acknowledge our marriage on the planet Aagon, when we went through the Cleansing and Unifying Ceremony, and now you seem hesitant about this. Why can't you enjoy this news and this moment?" He hesitated and looked down for a moment, then said, ". . . Unless you don't . . ."

Kathryn placed her fingers over his lips to stop him talking. Smiling, she said, "Have I ever told you what enticing, wonderful lips you have? How I have looked at them and constantly wondered, and wanted to know what they felt like?" Suddenly she leaned forward and kissed him softly, then drew back and looking intently into his eyes said, "I love you, Chakotay, and as you, almost from the moment I first saw you. I . . ."

Chakotay suddenly wrapped his arms around her and kissed her long and deep, and then both stood quietly with their arms around each other, reveling in the joy of the moment.

"I really don't think we should put on such a public display my dear," said Kathryn quietly with her face against his chest.

Chakotay looked down at her. "I really don't care about that. I have waited four long years to hold you in my arms and I don't intend to let go soon." They both laughed, but neither made a move to separate.

Doctor Chakotay, hearing this as he walked out of the room, walked over to them and smiled. "Legend has it that your love for each other was the strongest, deepest love Starfleet had ever known, and you would allow nothing to separate you. Seeing you this way, and yet knowing it has yet to happen, is rather inspiring to me."

Chakotay and Kathryn smiled at him then looked lovingly at one another. "Do you know when it occurs, Dr.?" asked Kathryn.

The Doctor smiled as he nodded his head. "Of course, but I'm not allowed to say. The magic moment of how and when it happened is also among our legends, and is always told to our children."

All three smiled, then the Dr. looked towards Jaimie's room. "She is gradually becoming conscious. A few moments ago she called out both your names. Would you like to see her again?" Without waiting for an answer, in fact assuming it would be affirmative, the Dr. turned and walked into the room, closely followed by Kathryn and Chakotay.

As they reached the bed, Kathryn took hold of Jaimie's hand, while Chakotay slipped his arm around Kathryn's shoulders. At the touch of her hand, Jaimie stirred, and then slowly her eyes opened. Gradually they cleared and she saw them both. Smiling she said weakly, "Hi guys, thanks for getting me home."

"No need to thank us, Jaimie," Kathryn said softly. "Don't try to talk, you must rest. The Doctor says you are getting better by the minute."

Jaimie gave a feeble grin. "The Doctor? You've seen him?"

"Yes, as well as Jeremiah and Katelyn and even Captain Gates," replied Chakotay.

At that point Jaimie saw Chakotay's arm around Kathryn and her eyes seemed to light up. "Then you know what I couldn't tell you guys all this time?"

Kathryn looked up at Chakotay then back to Jaimie. "Yes we do, and we are the most proud parents, grandparents or whatever you want to call us. Somehow, I think deep down both Chakotay and I must have sensed your interest in us meant more that just a job or friendship."

Chakotay leaned over and kissed Kathryn on the cheek. "And we couldn't be more proud or happy, Jaimie."

Jaimie nodded her head, closed her eyes and mumbled something unintelligible, then smiled and drifted off.

The Doctor, who had been standing on the other side of the bed, said, "She's going to sleep a lot for the next few days. But she has always been a fighter and it won't surprise me if she's the one to take you back."

At the mention of going back, Kathryn became extremely concerned as to what the crew must be thinking about their disappearance.

"Don't even worry about it," the Doctor said. "I'm sure Jaimie will simply back-time the whole event. Which should really make things interesting the next time she visits."

"Back-time? I don't understand," said Kathryn.

A pained look came over Doctor Chakotay's face and he stared at them for a moment. Shaking his head and with an embarrassed grin, he said, "Oops. I shouldn't have mentioned that, but you have a right to know I guess. It's a process whereby Jaimie takes you back and deposits you in exact positioning a couple of minutes before all this started."

"You mean we wont remember any of this?" exclaimed Chakotay, a hurt, disappointed look crossing his face.

"I'm afraid not, but I assure you, you two will get together. At least you better or 500 years worth of your descendents will cease to exist!"

Kathryn and Chakotay stood looking at one another for a few moments, and as they slipped their arms around each other Kathryn said, "Then I want to enjoy the time we have together now." Suddenly she thought of something and turning to the Doctor asked, "Will you remember meeting us? Will Jaimie have to relive being shot?"

"Yes and no," smiled the Doctor. "We - all of us here at Starfleet as a matter of fact - will know and remember your visit. Jaimie won't experience her trauma again because after she deposits you she immediately leaves and returns to the 29th Century. But it did happen in her original time trip to that planet and she will bear the scar, both physically and mentally."

"It happened but it didn't happen. Tell me another thing if you can. All this time travel – doesn't it change everything each time Jaimie or whomever travels into another century?"

Dr Chakotay smiled. "Our scientists have come up with a method through juggling quantum mechanics equations, whereby when the time-ship enters another century the time ripples of that century are not affected, so it is perfectly safe. I worried for a while about the traveler, and there was a residual effect at first, but now even they are safe."

"I feel a headache coming on," replied Kathryn as she rubbed her forehead.

As Chakotay and Dr Chakotay chuckled, Jeremiah and Katelyn returned and after checking on Jaimie's condition, told Chakotay and Kathryn they would be staying at Jaimie's apartment.

"I certainly hope you cleaned it up," admonished their father.

"That's what we've been doing, Dad, don't worry." Smiling at Kathryn and Chakotay, Jeremiah said, "Grandma is gone so much she doesn't get much time to keep things organized at her place. We probably shouldn't have re-arranged some things as she knows where everything is even if it looks like a mess." Both laughed at that and then Jeremiah said, "We can leave now if you wish. You probably want to freshen up and then we can get something to eat."

After a last check on Jaimie, they turned to Doctor Chakotay, bid their farewells, then Kathryn, Chakotay, Jeremiah and Katelyn left the room.

* * *

As they walked down the corridors Kathryn and Chakotay were met with constant smiles of passing personnel. Upon finally exiting the building, Jeremiah indicated a Transport. After everyone was seated, Jeremiah, sitting in the pilot's seat said, "Computer, Jaimie's home on Voyager Place."

Kathryn gave a short laugh. "Voyager Place?"

Jeremiah turned back to Kathryn and smiled. "Yes, Grandma has a place out of the city. Says she wants peace and quiet with trees and fresh air, that she gets more than enough excitement on her trips."

"I think what she meant, Jeremiah," spoke up Katelyn, "is the name, Voyager Place."

"Oh - yeah," laughed Jeremiah. "Grandma is the Voyager expert in all of Starfleet. Knows everything there is to know, including even minute details. She named her street Voyager Place and. . . ." he hesitated and looked at Katelyn and they both burst out laughing. Finally he continued with, "She also named her home J&C's Haven."

Katelyn, still laughing, said, "She is totally in love with Voyager and you two. Hoped for years to find something to check on in the Delta Quadrant so she could see you two personally. Said pictures just wouldn't do!"

Jeremiah laughed. "But Captain Gates, knowing the situation, deliberately kept those assignments from her, at least that's Grandma's story."

Kathryn and Chakotay chuckled at this bit of information and Chakotay remarked that Jaime was quite a woman.

Conversation waned for the moment and the Hover Transport sailed quietly along, with Kathryn and Chakotay intently peering out the windows trying to absorb everything they saw.

"What city is this, Katelyn?"

"It's New San Francisco. The old city was almost completely destroyed in a cataclysmic event two hundred years ago and rebuilt."

At that point the Hover Transport came to a stop, and sat motionless in midair. Kathryn craned her neck looking around and finally asked, "Why have we stopped, Jeremiah?"

"It's a required stop. This is a Hub Street and because we haven't moved a Hover Shuttle must be coming. They have priority because they are usually on official business." Kathryn then noted two other Hover Transports across the street also waiting. The wait lasted a few more minutes when suddenly a Hover Shuttle shot by them at extremely high speed.

"I guess they have priority," muttered Chakotay. "They went by faster than the speed of light."

Jeremiah smiled and nodded his head, but didn't respond as their Hovercraft immediately moved forward, seemingly without any commands from him. After a Kilometer they made a turn to the south and tree-lined streets were seen. Shortly the Hover slowed in a quiet, almost secluded area, and settled down at the front of a small house. Blooming flowers of various colors were spaced around the front and sides of the house and trees surrounded the grounds, offering a serene scene of peace and tranquility.

"This is beautiful," commented Chakotay. "Actually what I would expect from Jaimie."

"Yes it is beautiful, Chakotay," said Kathryn, "But almost contrary from the person Jaimie seems to be."

"That's exactly what I mean, Kathryn. This is probably closer to her true nature then what she is on her job."

"Exactly, Grandpa," exclaimed Jeremiah. Then he blushed. "Oh, I'm sorry, may I call you that or would you rath . . ."

"That is just fine, Jeremiah. A little strange and takes some getting used to, but I like the sound of it very much." As he said the last few words he turned and smiled at Kathryn, who returned his smile while nodding agreement.

The four exited the transport and walked to the porch where Katelyn inserted a card in a slot by the door and said, "Computer - recognize Katelyn."

"The voice of Katelyn is recognized. Welcome Katelyn."

The door slid open revealing a small, but tidy main room, with books and equipment in one corner. Katelyn showed them the bedroom, then suddenly hesitated and gave an embarrassed smile.

"I'm sorry, I just remembered you two aren't together as yet, but she does have another small room down the hall that one of you may use."

Chakotay smiled and turned to look at Kathryn, who, he discovered, was already looking at him. Kathryn turned to Katelyn. "Don't worry about it, we'll work it out later," then gave both Katelyn and Jeremiah a mischievous wink, which caused them both to laugh delightedly.

"What? Did I miss something?" asked Chakotay.

"Not a thing, dear," said Kathryn as she placed her hand on his arm.

Jeremiah and Katelyn then suggested they would leave and return in two hours, giving them time to shower and rest as well as absorb all the astounding events they have been experiencing.

As Kathryn walked with them to the door she commented on the number of paper books Jaimie had.

"Grandma collected them from the various areas she was in," said Jeremiah. "Said it gave her a better perspective."

"Actually," continued Katelyn, "Jeremiah and I spend a lot of time here reading them. Some are extremely interesting and informative, but it does seem strange handling paper books. She has Classics, History, Mystery and even Science Fiction."

"Science Fiction?" said Kathryn. "Anything like Quantum Mechanics lying around?"

"Only you would read something like Quantum Mechanics, Kathryn," laughed Chakotay, "But I don't see any Native American books."

"No she doesn't have any of those," replied Katelyn with a smile. "She said she didn't need any when she has you and that she has learned more from you and Great Grandpa Kolopak than any books could ever begin to offer."

At the mention of his father's name, Chakotay's eyes widened in astonishment. "She has seen my father? She's never mentioned that, has she Kathryn?"

"Not that I recall. When was this?"

"I think it was several years ago. She had a trip back into his area and decided to stop and see him. I guess they had a great conversation. She was disappointed you weren't there, but was told something about you being away at Starfleet Academy."

Chakotay's eyes misted. "Did she tell either of you about father?"

"Yes she did," chimed in Jeremiah, "But you should ask her if you want to know about it. We should leave now and we'll see you in a couple of hours."

The door slid shut, leaving Kathryn and Chakotay alone for the first time. Immediately they turned to each other, and after putting their arms around one another, just stood silently in the middle of the room.

Finally Kathryn broke the golden silence. "Well, I think I'll take that shower." Chakotay lifted his head to look at her, his soft brown eyes overflowing with emotion. He then kissed her, a gentle, yet somehow passionate kiss that made Kathryn tingle all over. Then a mischievous smile spread across his face. "About sleeping arrangements, sweetheart . . ."

Kathryn chuckled softly, slapped his shoulder, and as she started to walk away said, "Later."

"But we have to decide," said Chakotay in mock dismay.

Kathryn without further word, and just a backward glance and smile, disappeared into the bedroom. Chakotay grinned, then turned his attention to the books, eventually ending up at Jaimie's electronic setup. This must be where she monitors everything, he mused to himself. While studying the equipment he heard the shower stop and soon Kathryn walked into the room. Chakotay could not hide his admiration and love as he watched her dry her hair. She was so beautiful, and to think she will finally be his wife. But when he thought impatiently.

Kathryn herself was alert to Chakotay watching her and felt a great love well up inside her. When will we get together and how, she thought. For some reason, I hope it's soon. Glancing at Chakotay, she said, "Your turn. It's real water, not sonic and marvelously refreshing."

Chakotay nodded and rose. As he walked by Kathryn he softly placed his hand on her cheek and said, "You are so beautiful and I love you so very much. But most of all, it's wonderful to be able to freely tell you of my feelings."

Kathryn gave a shy smile, and taking his hand kissed it softly. "I love you, too, Chakotay, but get into that shower or we wont be ready when the kids return."

At the words 'kids' they both burst into laughter, and as Chakotay turned to go said, "Kids . . . who would have thought."

Sometime later they both sat relaxing in the front room. Chakotay was browsing through the books and Kathryn was intently studying Jaimie's equipment, much to Chakotay's amusement. She had also found several Voyager tapes and as much as she was tempted, kept reminding herself not to play them.

Suddenly, without warning, Jaimie's door exploded and five men in masks burst through the door, all holding phasers leveled at Kathryn and Chakotay. Before they could even move, they were grabbed, hands tied behind their backs, a hood placed over their heads and pushed roughly out the door.

* * *

Exactly two hours later Jeremiah and Katelyn arrived back at Jaimie's. They were horrified to find the door in shambles and Kathryn and Chakotay missing. Immediately they placed a call to Starfleet Security, followed by a call to Captain Gates. Then they sat down to try and figure out how this could have happened.

Shortly after Security arrived and started to investigate the house, Captain Gates arrived. "Tell me what you know," he asked a shaken Jeremiah and Katelyn. They related all events from the time they had left Admiral Kappa's office. Gates then turned to the man in charge of the Security detail, and inquired of their findings.

"Maquis," the Lt. said simply.

"Maquis!" Gates, Jeremiah and Katelyn echoed simultaneously.

"Yes sir, that faction we thought we had quelled two years ago. They left a message."

"What kind of message?" asked Gates.

The Lt. indicated a chip sitting on the table. Captain Gates walked over to it and peered intently. "Have you played it?"

"Yes sir, would you like to see it?"

"Indeed I would Lt." Gates said sharply.

The Lt. slipped on a pair of gloves and then proceeded to insert the chip in his wrist Tri-Corder. The image of a man appeared. Gates, Jeremiah and Katelyn stared unbelieving. The man had a tattoo identical to Chakotay's descendents.

"It's Uncle Roman," whispered Jeremiah.

"I am Roman. This is to let you know we now have your precious Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay. Within twelve hours they will be dead and all of their descendents will cease to exist. We will have purged Starfleet of their legacy and the Maquis will once again take their rightful place in the world. To put it simply you have murdered us for the last time. The Maquis will continue to fight for their land and their rights." The screen then went black.

* * *

Meanwhile, Kathryn and Chakotay had been pushed into a Hover Transport and then shoved roughly down on the floor. "All right, let's go," a voice said and the Hover started to move. Kathryn strained to be aware of turns, but being unfamiliar with this city she soon felt totally lost.

After a period of time, the Hover stopped and Kathryn and Chakotay were pulled to their feet. After walking a short ways they felt themselves being put in a transport of some sort and again shoved to the floor. This time a cover was thrown over them.

Chakotay had tried twice to ask why they were doing this, but was greeted only with silence. He tried again. "Why are you doing this? We have done nothing to you."

At last, an answer: "Be quiet Commander. You will know soon enough."

"Kathryn?" said Chakotay.

"Yes?" came the muffled reply.

"I guess this answers whether we sleep together tonight or not."

"Chakotay! How can you joke at a time like this?" came Kathryn's sharp reply.

"Just trying to relax my mind a little so I can think. We have to find a way to get out of this situation."

"Agreed, but we obviously can't do anything at the moment. Just stay alert, my dearest, we'll figure out something."

A loud "Quiet you two," along with a foot kicking Chakotay in the ribs ensued. The pain in his ribs was sharp and he muffled his groan as best he could. He wasn't going to give them any satisfaction if he could help it.

"You all right?" whispered Kathryn.

"I've had worse," he whispered back

After some time, the Hover started to descend and Kathryn and Chakotay tensed as the Hover touched the ground. At first everything was still and then the Hover seemed to glide forward before stopping again.

The cover was pulled off them and Chakotay jerked roughly to his feet, Kathryn no less gingerly. They were led forward, and Kathryn was aware of her footsteps echoing and knew they were in some large, empty building. Shortly both were turned around and backed up until they could feel something at the back of their legs.

"Sit down" came the command and they both slowly lowered themselves until sure they were on a chair.

Immediately their arms were pulled behind the back of the chair and felt their wrists being tied together. At that point the hoods were then pulled off their heads and both blinked at the sudden light in their eyes. Slowly people came into focus. Chakotay, as he had before, asked why they were doing this.

"I don't understand. Why are we prisoners? We are not even supposed to be in this century."

A man stepped forward, his face partially shaded, and looked at them. "You look exactly like the pictures we've seen for years," he sneered, then suddenly pulled back his hand and slapped Chakotay across the face.

"Stop that!" cried out Kathryn "We've done nothing to you."

"Ah, but you have," said the man. "For centuries you have plagued us!"

"In what way?" asked Kathryn sharply.

"Starfleet attempted to kill off all the Maquis in your century. At least they thought they did. And you, Chakotay, deserted the Maquis to serve in Starfleet."

"I did not desert," countered Chakotay. "Kathryn . . . Captain Janeway was sent to capture me and the situation became bad. Captain Janeway graciously saved my crew and incorporated them into Voyager's crew when I sacrificed my ship. I don't call that desertion. Besides, it wasn't Starfleet that killed the Maquis, it was the damn Cardassians and you know that!" said Chakotay virtually spitting out the last few words.

The man tilted his head and Chakotay's eyes widened. "You are wearing my tattoo! What's the meaning of that?"

The man smiled. "I was wondering when you would notice. I am Roman, brother of the esteemed Doctor Chakotay. I assume you have met him?"

Chakotay nodded and whispered, "You are also the son of Jaimie. How can you betray your own mother?"

Roman's eyes clouded with pain for a moment before he answered. "Yes I am and I want to make it plain she is not at fault in any way. She is as wonderful a mother as any son could wish to have." Roman then became quiet.

"By killing us you are also killing your mother," Chakotay said.

"Not really. She will just never have been born," Roman snapped back.

Kathryn entered this exchange. "But why have you joined the Maquis?"

"Very simple. I believe in their cause. For centuries they have been persecuted and killed. When word reached us that you two were actually in the 29th Century it was unbelievable. We will be able to undo centuries of murder to our ranks."

"By doing what?" asked Chakotay.

Roman smiled and knelt down so he was face level with both Kathryn and Chakotay. "As I've already said, kill you both, thus effectively eliminating all of your descendents, who I might add have all served in Starfleet and at times helped in hunting down various factions of Maquis."

"But by killing us, Roman, you will also cease to exist, if what you are saying about being a brother is true," said Kathryn.

"Oh, it's true all right. And I know the risk. But it will be worth it knowing that somewhere back in time, the Maquis will still live and fight for their rights and their land." He then stood and walked away, with the rest of the group following him.

Chakotay and Kathryn looked at each other. "I'm sorry, Kathryn. It looks like you would have been better off to have killed me at the Caretaker's Array."

"Stop that! We must think of something to do, to delay this so Starfleet can mount a rescue operation." Then she smiled. "If we don't make it, at least you finally know how much I love you." Immediately she turned serious again. "But that aside, we have to think positive."

Chakotay's face was full of love and emotion as he looked at Kathryn. "And I love you, but I want to experience our love and have those children we're supposed to."

For a few moments they looked at one another, aching to be close. Then they both started looking around the room they were in, hoping beyond hope they could see something that would aid them. A quick look determined they were in a large warehouse and it was virtually bare. The Maquis were gathered on the other side of the room and in deep conversation. Chakotay could see there were only five of them, if that were any consolation, but even so, what could he and Kathryn do? It seemed hopeless.

* * *

Back at Starfleet there was a maze of activity and meetings going on. Jeremiah and Katelyn had gone back to the Hospital, as whatever was going to be done wouldn't involve them anyway. Besides, if Kathryn and Chakotay were killed, they wanted to be with their Dad and Jaimie when the moment of existence would be wiped out. Jeremiah gave a big sigh and walked over to Jaimie's bed. She was arguing with her son Chakotay and he decided to listen and hopefully find out what was going on.

"Have they found where they are located yet, Chakotay?"

"No, mother, and you are too weak to do anything anyway, so just be quiet and rest."

"Rest! I don't need rest. I need to get out of here!"

"No, mother, you are making a fast recovery, but you need at least two more days in bed," he said.

"I've got eternity to rest if they kill them, Chakotay! Now get out of my way. I have to get to my equipment. I might be able to find them before it's too late!" She then started to sit up and a wave of nausea, accompanied by dizziness made her collapse back down on the bed.

Dr. Chakotay shook his head. "Maybe that will make you realize what I'm saying, mother! Now just lay still."

"It was only because I sat up too fast," she said breathing heavy, then in a determined effort raised herself slowly to a sitting position.

"Please lay down, Grandma," pleaded Jeremiah.

"Now, now, Jeremiah. Not to worry, I know what I'm doing. I'll be okay in a few minutes." But as hard as she tried to remain sitting, her weakened condition forced her to again drop back onto the bed.

At that moment Captain Gates walked in and went straight to Jaimie's bedside. Leaning down he looked at her and said, "Jaimie, can you hear me?"

Without opening her eyes she replied, "Yeah, Gates, what's the latest?"

"Nothing as far as news concerning Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay. But I need to know something. Have Jeremiah or Katelyn told you who's in charge of this kidnapping?"

Jaimie opened her eyes and stared at Gates. "No, but something in your voice tells me it's my son, Roman."

"I'm sorry, yes it is. Do you have any idea where he might have taken Kathryn and Chakotay?"

She looked at Gates for a long moment and then closed her eyes. "No," she whispered weakly.

Gates nodded his head and turned to leave. Looking at Dr. Chakotay he said, "We are doing absolutely everything we can think of. How is Jaimie doing . . . really?"

"She's quite weak, but making her usual remarkable recovery."

"An amazing woman, Dr. Chakotay. And all the more amazing in light of the fact when she got here she was virtually dead."

"She has an indomitable spirit to live, Captain, so it's really not so amazing."

"Dr. do you - Do you know anything or have any ideas that might help us?"

"I'm afraid I can't be of much help. Roman and I haven't spoken for the last three to four years."

"I see. Well, thank you, Dr. We'll keep in touch." He then turned and left and Jeremiah ran after him. "Captain Gates! Sir, do you have any ideas at all where they are?"

Gates slapped Jeremiah on the shoulder and smiled. "We'll find them Jeremiah. Virtually every Starfleet personnel, including all the Cadets are being mobilized for this search."

"You've got to find them, sir, because . . . " and his voice trailed off.

"We will Jeremiah," he replied firmly and walked away.

As Gates walked away Jeremiah stared after him, then finally turned and went back into the room. He felt so hopeless. If only Grandma had her strength, she would think of something. She would find them! Sitting down at his dad's console, he absentmindedly punched in Jaimie's chart.

* * *

Meanwhile, Chakotay had worked his wrists in a frenzied attempt to free them from the ties, but the only thing he had succeeded in doing was making his wrists raw He could also feel wetness and knew they were bleeding. He looked over at Kathryn and saw she was attempting the same thing.

"Any luck, Kathryn?" he asked softly.

"Not yet," she answered, "but we have to keep trying."

At that moment Roman started walking towards them. Seeing their efforts he smiled. "How does it feel to be tied up? Rather a hopeless feeling isn't it?"

"Please," said Kathryn. "Can't we talk about this like two civilized people?"

"What? You mean a talk between us could solve 500 years of persecution, Captain?" he sneered.

"It would be a start, Roman. I don't understand all of this. Maybe through you and I talking we could come up with something that would . . ."

"Now really, Captain," Roman interrupted. "Do you really think there is a solution after 500 years? We would just sit here and talk and in a few moments everything would be all right! In a way, I pity you Captain, because you have no idea what this is all about. You've been out gallivanting all over the galaxy while the Maquis - and your precious

Chakotay - were trying to save their homes, their families, and their land. You had no idea what was going on, and what's more, you didn't care!" he spat out angrily. With that he suddenly pulled out his phaser and angrily pointed it at Kathryn's head.

"No!" screamed Chakotay. "Please don't! Kill me if you must, then we wouldn't have the children that you are so worried about, but let Kathryn go - let her return to Voyager. Please!"

Roman slowly released the pressure in his finger and looked at Chakotay. "You make a good point, Chakotay." And he pointed the phaser at Chakotay while a sinister smile spread across his face.

"Please no," cried out Kathryn. "Chakotay, that was a beautiful try, but we must find a way to resolve this so no one dies. Please Roman, this isn't necessary. Chakotay and I can agree not to become lovers and have a family. Then you live, everyone lives, but if you kill us it will only exacerbate the Maquis-Starfleet issue."

"That's stupid thinking Captain. Besides, I let you go, you go back to Voyager away from us and then marry anyway. Nice try." Then looking at Chakotay he said, "She's quite a talker isn't she Commander?"

Chakotay looked Roman in the eyes. "You are part of me, Roman. I think there is good in you - your thoughts are just confused right now. Even though I fought in the Maquis, I am non-violent, and every time I had to kill someone, I was sick for months after. That non-violent trait is in you, Roman. I see it in your eyes!"

Roman hesitated and blinked. "All this talk is just that, talk. Enough!" He then turned as one of the men called to him. "Yes! What is it? Can't you see I'm busy?"

"Our leader has contacted us."

Roman's eyes went wide in surprise. "Are you sure? He wouldn't call here," and he then turned away from Kathryn and Chakotay and walked toward the group.

Kathryn looked at Chakotay. "Good work, Chakotay. I think you got to him a little. We must keep him talking."

Chakotay smiled. "He has my eyes, Kathryn, but your stubbornness."

". . . and your heart, Chakotay," she said with a soft smile. "Keep him talking, it might just work!"

Back at Starfleet, a massive search, the biggest in Starfleet history, was underway. Privately Gates held out no hope. Roman had said within twelve hours and already over five hours were gone. What could they hope to accomplish in such a limited time frame? More than likely they would soon get a message from Roman on where to pick up the bodies. He turned from the window. He sighed deeply, pain and anguish creasing his face. Jaimie would cease to exist. His mentor. His friend. Oh yes - friend. Despite all their battles they really did love and respect each other. He knew he did and when Jaimie thought he wasn't looking he could see the affection for him in her eyes. What would his life be like without her around? Shaking his head to clear such thoughts, he moved back to his desk and noted his private line was blinking.

* * *

Roman continued to talk with his accomplices over on the far side of the room. He was now having an argument with one of the men. Kathryn and Chakotay looked at one another. It could either mean a delay or the execution would be moved up. Both had continued to work at their ties, but succeeded only in making their wrists bleed more.

Suddenly Roman broke away from the group and came striding angrily towards them. Both Kathryn and Chakotay tensed. Was this the end?

"The time line has changed!" said Roman sharply. "You have ten minutes! Say your goodbyes."

"For God's sake, untie us Roman," asked Chakotay. "Let me hold Kathryn in my arms. Please - let us die together!"

Roman laughed. "Wouldn't that be a pretty picture." Then he knelt down and said softly so the others couldn't hear, "I'm really sorry it had to come to this. You two did good things in your Century. It's only been the last 200 years that things went sour, but there isn't any way to adjust for that, so it's all or nothing."

He then stood and walked thirty feet away and when the group joined him they engaged in an animated conversation.

Just then Chakotay and Kathryn heard a whisper right behind them. "Don't say a word and don't react to anything. I'm going to untie you, but keep your hands in back as if you are still tied up. When I give the word I want both of you to run like hell for that door and don't look back! Once you're outside, turn left and run down that street. Understand?"

Both gave subtle nods and then Kathryn felt her hands being untied. Seconds later, Chakotay's hands were freed. Both looked at each other and held back smiles. It was Jaimie! How in God's name had she found them? But more than that, how could she possibly be on her feet? She was dying less than 24 hours ago!

Moments later Roman turned and walked towards them, with the other four following closely. He gave them a half-smile. "I guess I'm the one elected to do the dirty work, seeing as how you are my ancestors. Once I shoot this phaser you two will die, and ironically I will also cease to exist. Weird feeling. Wonder if I feel anything or if

I'm just gone 'poof'." Slowly, almost reluctantly, he raised the phaser and pointed it at Kathryn.

Chakotay yelled "No! Let me die first."

Roman merely shook his head. Just then a loud yell of "Now! Run!" boomed from close by and at the same moment a phaser fired. Roman gave a grunt and dropped to the floor. Chakotay and Kathryn jumped to their feet and started running for the door and saw phaser fire erupt from that area - but it wasn't aimed at them! They heard a lot of yelling as they burst through the door.

Meanwhile Jaimie, after dropping Roman, ran a few feet to her left and fired again, dropping another man and noted the phaser fire from the door. Good, she noted with satisfaction, Jeremiah was in the right spot and doing his job. With all the confusion now she should be able to easily get the last two. Her adrenalin was in high gear and she quickly changed her position by diving back to her left, rolled over to one knee and fired. Almost simultaneously another burst came from Jeremiah and then all was quiet. Cautiously Jaimie looked all around. All five men were down.

'That was a pretty fair fight, Jeremiah," she said aloud. "Two against five. Are you all right?"

"Yes Grandma, but how are you?" replied Jeremiah as he un-cloaked

"I'm ok, now get out of here and stay with the plan!"

Meanwhile Kathryn and Chakotay, after running out the door, turned left as they had been instructed. Chakotay grabbed Kathryn's arm as they raced down the street. Just ahead, Katelyn suddenly appeared in a doorway.

"Here!" she called. "In here. Quickly."

Kathryn and Chakotay headed for Katelyn and rushed through the door. Shutting the door behind them Katelyn turned and tossed a belt to Chakotay. "Put that on and here's one for you Grandma" After helping Kathryn put on her belt she pushed a button and Kathryn immediately disappeared. Noting Chakotay had his belt on she cloaked him, then herself. Opening the door she peered out. "Come on, let's get out of here," she said quietly, and all three walked out into the street.

At that point they saw Jeremiah running as fast as he could down the street.

"Jeremiah . . . here, right by the door," Katelyn called out. Jeremiah immediately ran over to the area.

"How's Grandma?" Katelyn asked anxiously.

"She said she was all right, but I'm going back, she didn't come with me."

"You better put your cloak back on Jeremiah," called Katelyn.

"I'm all right," Jeremiah answered as he turned and started back but just then Jaimie slowly came around the corner of the building. She was obviously struggling and as Jeremiah ran up to her he put his arm around her for support.

Stopping, Jaimie clicked something on her wrist and said, "Gates, where in the heck are you?"

"Coming right down now, Jaimie," came the reply and almost immediately six Hover Craft appeared over the building and settled to the ground in various positions.

"They're all down, Gates! Get in there and tie them up," yelled Jaimie. "Where's the darn Hover to take Kathryn and Chakotay away?"

"Right behind you, Jaimie. Now all of you get out of here! We'll take over," came his sharp reply.

Jaimie turned just as a Hover settled by the doorway where Katelyn, Kathryn and Chakotay were told to be. Knowing they would be there, Jaimie yelled, "Move Katelyn! You too, Jeremiah. Get out of here!" Jeremiah hesitated momentarily, but seeing the look in Jaimie's eyes he whirled and sprinted for the Hover, diving in headfirst just as it lifted off the ground.

Kathryn looked down at Jaimie from her Hover. She was now on one knee, and in obvious distress. Turning to Jeremiah she shouted, "We must go back and get her!"

Jeremiah shook his head as he stood. "Everything has been worked out to the last second. She'll be along in the next Hover!"

On the ground Jaimie felt absolutely whipped. She could hardly breathe. The adrenalin high she had been on was now gone, her strength was gone and she felt totally helpless. Gradually she collapsed until she was on her hands and knees. Her head hung down as she struggled desperately to get air in her lungs. I'm going to die but at least we saved Kathryn and Chakotay she mumbled to herself.

Suddenly she felt two strong hands under her arms lifting her to her feet. Looking up she saw Gates who grinned and said, "Come on old lady. All aboard!" He picked her up and stepped into the Hover that had settled quietly beside them and placed her gently on the floor.

"I'm so weak I can't even dispute that old lady remark," she grumbled, which caused Gates to chuckle. Raising her head she asked, "Roman?"

"They have all been put in the Hovers. He's ok Jaimie."

Jaimie lay back on the floor not trying any longer to remain upright. "When we get back I want to see him."

"I assure you he's all right, but they are all still unconscious. You and Jeremiah must have had your phasers set at heavy stun."

Jaimie weakly nodded her head, mumbled something, then drifted into a semi-conscious state. Gates grinned as he threw a cover over her and the Hover quickly moved off. What a woman!

Jeremiah and Katelyn, after again making sure the still cloaked Kathryn and Chakotay understood their instructions on what to do when they arrived at Starfleet, prepared to exit the Hover as it settled to the ground. Just after he stepped out a nearby Cadet called out, "Jeremiah, any word on Janeway and Chakotay?"

"None," he said. "We are preparing for the worst," then looked down at the ground as he continued to walk toward the building. Reaching the door, Jeremiah held it open and motioned Katelyn to go through first. She hesitated as she looked over at the cadet and waved, thus giving Kathryn and Chakotay time to enter the building, and then walked through the doors.

Jeremiah and Katelyn, with Kathryn and Chakotay trailing close behind, walked quickly down a corridor, got on a turbolift and exited on the third floor. When Jeremiah so no one in the corridor they quickly got on another turbolift and went down to the Lower Level. Exiting here they walked to a door marked Garage and at this point Katelyn also cloaked, leaving Jeremiah the only visible person. Moving to a Hover they all climbed in, and then Jeremiah engaged the motor and moved the craft slowly out the door. Climbing quickly he headed North a few hundred yards, abruptly dipped and touched briefly on top of another building just long enough for Katelyn, Kathryn and Chakotay to jump out. Jeremiah then headed towards the Security Building and landed out front, making sure people saw he was alone.

As he walked toward the doors "Any word," was called out by a Lieutenant. "Not yet" Jeremiah replied and entered the building.

Katelyn led Kathryn and Chakotay, who still did not understand all of this secret moving about, across the roof to a door. Peering in cautiously she nodded and all three headed down the stairs, with Katelyn uncloaking as she pulled open another door. As she stepped into a corridor Kathryn suddenly felt in familiar territory and realized they had entered the Hospital and were now on the floor Jaimie was on.

Entering her room, both Kathryn and Chakotay were astonished to see Jaimie already in her bed. Both she and Chakotay rushed over and peered down at her and then up to Doctor Chakotay who was standing opposite.

Without taking his eyes from Jaimie, he whispered, "I can't see you two, but with Katelyn now standing beside me, I am assuming you are here."

"We're here," whispered Kathryn, "But I must admit I feel quite confused at the moment. How is Jaimie?"

"Jaimie will be okay. She pushed it tremendously today and is very weak, but I'm confident by tomorrow she will not only be okay but up on her feet. As to being confused, I can't say as I blame you - it will all be explained soon enough." Then looking at Katelyn, he asked "Roman?"

"He should be in the Brig by now. Everything went just the way Jaimie planned it."

Doctor Chakotay nodded. "At least he wasn't killed and you got our guests out safely. Now, where will you have them stay for a few hours?"

"Right here if you don't mind, dad."

He looked up and smiled. "That is logical and the two private rooms in the rear are empty. Take them over to #23 Katelyn - that's the most private." The Dr. then walked over to the main door and peered up and down the corridor.

"Empty . . . do it now."

Once inside the room Katelyn had Kathryn and Chakotay uncloak and took the belts, but advised them to rest and talk quietly. "Tomorrow morning, if everything goes well, Grandma will take you two back to Voyager."

Before Katelyn could leave, Kathryn quickly asked, "Katelyn, can you explain to us how Jaimie could possibly get out of that bed today? When we last saw her she was barely alive!"

Katelyn almost laughed. "Well, you just don't know Grandma's will or her stubbornness."

Chakotay placed his arm around Kathryn and said, "I think we know where she got her stubbornness, Katelyn, but it's still amazing she was able to get up, and now look at her, back in bed and weak as a kitten."

"When she makes up her mind she is going to do something, nothing can stop her!"

Chakotay looked down at Kathryn and smiled, but Kathryn quickly said, "Don't you say another word, Chakotay. I think you've said enough already." Then looking at Katelyn she added, "Chakotay seems to feel I am the most stubborn woman in Starfleet, but you know something? If Jaimie got her stubbornness from me it just saved our lives!"

They were all quietly snickering when Katelyn put her hand up for quiet and quickly stepped out while closing the door. Voices were heard coming down the hall and soon Gates entered, along with Admiral Kappa.

"How is Jaimie, Doctor Chakotay?" called out the Admiral.

"She is coming along just fine, Admiral. Should actually be up and walking around sometime tomorrow."

"Good! Such a remarkable woman," he said as he gazed down on the sleeping Jaimie. Then glancing up at the Dr he gave a wink and said, "Take good care of her Dr. We do want to see her up and around soon."

Gates gave Katelyn a questioning look and received a subtle nod. Gates then said, "I'll be back later to check on her." Then nodding to both the Doctor and Katelyn he and the Admiral turned to leave, with Dr. Chakotay walking with them to the door. As soon as they turned up the corridor, the Dr. looked back at Katelyn and nodded. She immediately ducked into Kathryn and Chakotay's room.

Kathryn looked up and smiled. "We have another question, Katelyn, besides wondering at all the cloaking and moving about. We are still concerned about Jaimie. How on earth, besides stubbornness and determination, did Jaimie get on her feet, find where they were holding us, make a plan and execute it? It just all seemed very fast!"

"Now that's a long story." Seeing both were waiting she decided to fill them in. "Gates came by to see Grandma briefly, and told her it was Roman that did this and asked her if she knew where he might take you. She told him no, but something in her eyes made Jeremiah think she was not telling Gates everything. Then he got playing on dad's console and punched in Jaimie's chart and noticed on two different occasions when Grandma came back rather beat up she'd had a particular medicine and was on her feet the next day.

"What kind of medicine?" Kathryn interrupted.

Katelyn shrugged her shoulders. "I'm not sure, but it's something she and dad developed - it seems to speed up her healing somehow. Jeremiah then asked dad about it and got bawled out for looking at something that was none of his business. Grandma heard and said it was all right for him to know and that while 'resting' she had been preparing a plan of rescue and needed one of those shots."

"But how did she know where we would be?" interrupted Kathryn again.

Katelyn smiled. "Grandma has a fantastic memory and she recalled when Roman, as a young boy, used to go to a deserted part of the city – the 'old city' we call it - and play with his friends in an empty warehouse. She said Roman loved that area, felt it was full of mystery."

"She felt even then that Roman was involved?" asked Chakotay.

"Yes, says she's 'butted heads' with Roman about the Maquis for years. Anyway she contacted Gates on his private line, got us together and outlined her plan. It took Gates about twenty minutes to secretly gather up six Hovers and 12 men he could trust." Looking at Kathryn she said, "You see we have some people in Starfleet that we feel we can't trust, yet we have no evidence."

Kathryn and Chakotay looked at each other. "Some things never change," said Kathryn.

"Unfortunately so. Anyway we slipped out of here with Grandma barely navigating, but when we got to where she thought you would be we momentarily panicked because you weren't there. Then Grandma just seemed to sense where you were and once her scanner determined seven hot spots she notified Gates to reposition and she and Jeremiah cloaked and went in." Katelyn smiled and then asked, "Now you have to fill me in on what happened inside."

"Nothing much to report, Katelyn," said Chakotay. "Kathryn and I suddenly heard Jaimie behind us telling us what to do as she untied our hands. I must admit, though, when Roman lifted that phaser to fire and nothing happened with Jaimie, I thought sure she had fainted and we were goners!"

"Hardly," said Katelyn with a chuckle. "Knowing Grandma she was probably moving to a position whereby when she fired, if it tripped an automatic firing reaction from Roman it wasn't going to strike you."

"In other words, her angle of shot to set up his reactive angle if his phaser fired when he was hit," suggested Kathryn.

"Exactly!" said Katelyn.

"Are you into Quantum Mechanics again Kathryn?" laughed Chakotay.

"At least the science of action and reaction," chortled Kathryn, causing all three to start laughing.

"What's so funny?" was heard as the door opened.

Looking up they saw a very weak, but smiling Jaimie.

Both Kathryn and Chakotay jumped to their feet and took hold of her arms. "What are you doing out of bed, young lady?" scolded Kathryn.

"Young lady?" said Jaimie. "Why that's the nicest thing anybody has said to me in 500 years!"

She was led over to the bed and gratefully sat down. Kathryn sat beside her and placing her arm around Jaimie's shoulders said, "We haven't thanked you yet, Jaimie, for saving our lives. I'm still amazed by you and how you found us, but Chakotay and I are forever grateful."

"Forever grateful is about right. As for how I did it, I guess you could say it's in my genes!" Then she turned to Katelyn. "Where's Roman?"

"In a Security Cell, and Jeremiah has gone with Captain Gates to see him."

"I must see him, Katelyn, as well as talk to Gates."

"Don't you think you should rest, Jaimie," spoke up Chakotay. "You may have great genes, but you look like hell."

Jaimie gave her familiar wave of the hand. "Too much to do. Got to see Roman and Gates and get you two out of here before the remaining members of that cell make another attempt." She then called out, "Chakotay, I need another booster so I can go see Roman."

"Mother!" said Dr. Chakotay as he appeared at the door. "You've already had two. You and I don't know the effects of more than one shot, let alone three!"

"Do you see anything wrong with me right now? I'm okay and where's my belt?"

Dr. Chakotay looked at Jaimie, then at Kathryn, Chakotay and Katelyn. In an exasperated tone he said, "I'm supposed to be in charge here Mother, and somehow I can't get that through your head!"

Jaimie smiled sweetly and said, "You are son, but these are special times and when this is over I promise you I will rest for a month! Now get me that booster and my belt. In fact, where are the belts for Kathryn and Chakotay? I want them all right away."

"Why do you have to wear a belt to see Roman?" asked Katelyn.

Jaimie looked at her a moment and then said, "Good idea, Katelyn! I wont wear the belt."

"Idea Grandma?" asked Katelyn with a confused look on her face.

"Never mind. Just help me get my clothes on and take me over so I can see Roman and everyone can see me up and around." Turning to her son she reminded him of the booster.

He returned with the needle and Jaimie's clothes. Katelyn and Kathryn helped Jaimie dress while Dr Chakotay administered the shot and Chakotay discreetly turned his back.

As Jaimie and Katelyn started for the door, Jaimie, in quite a stern voice, told Kathryn and Chakotay to get some rest.

Kathryn and Chakotay looked at Dr. Chakotay with bemused looks on their faces. "She's telling us to rest and she's the one that almost died!" said Kathryn.

Dr. Chakotay gave a small sarcastic laugh. "That's our beloved Jaimie. Well I do suggest the two of you get some rest. I'll lock the door, as you still have to remain unseen. My brother Kolobek will be here soon and wants to meet you. I just hope he can make it in time."

"You have a brother?" asked Chakotay.

"Two actually. Besides Kolobek there is Hirato, but he's away on a two year mission and is going to be devastated to have missed meeting you!"

Chakotay and Kathryn looked at each other in wonder as well as astonishment. Chakotay then put his arms around Kathryn. "Looks like we started quite a legacy, Kathryn."

Looking up at him with eyes beginning to water, Kathryn nodded her head and said in a husky voice. "Quite a legacy," then buried her head in Chakotay's chest. Chakotay, knowing she was trying desperately to hold back tears, tightened his arms around her while kissing the top of her head time and again.

Dr. Chakotay smiled, silently left the room, and closed and locked the door.

When Jaimie arrived at the Security Building she was greeted with continual looks of astonishment and comments of "Jaimie! I can't believe it!" and "Wow, Jaimie, you're all right!" Taking the turbo she and Katelyn were soon at the Brig. As Jaimie walked in Gates looked at her with wide eyes and said loudly "Jaimie, what are you doing out of bed?"

Jaimie waved her hand at him and walked to Roman's cell. He was sitting on the bed, his back against the wall. Turning his head, he looked out at his mother. A tinge of red colored his face as he said softly, "Glad to see you're feeling better, mother."

Jaimie looked at Gates who nodded to the guard to release the force field. Jaimie entered and Roman stood as she neared. She looked at him for a moment, then silently reached out and put her arms around him. Roman, at first shocked by the move, then put his arms around her and squeezed tightly. "I'm sorry, mom," he whispered.

"You did what you thought you had to do, Roman, it was just the wrong decision." Leaning back she looked into his eyes. "I love you Roman, despite all of this, and I'll do everything I can to help you through it, but someday I want us to sit down and discuss everything. What you were going to do was so wrong I can't even begin to comprehend your thinking."

Roman silently nodded. "You better get back to the hospital. You don't look too good."

Jaimie agreed that was probably best and before rising gave a huge sigh. As she stood Roman stood and suddenly hugged her again, then whispered in her ear, "It was you, wasn't it mom? The one who shot me?"

Jaimie pulled back and looking into his eyes said simply, "Yes son, it was me."

Roman smiled. "Good. I'd have hated for it to have been anyone else."

Jaimie smiled as love and understanding passed between mother and son.

Jaimie turned and walked out without a backward glance, and Katelyn quickly joined her after a quick smile and wave to Roman.

Upon entering the Hospital room, Jaimie, without any suggestion from her son, gratefully laid down. "Remember what I told you Katelyn. You and Jeremiah be ready with everything in the morning," and she turned on her side and was soon fast asleep.

"I swear, she could lay down on a picket fence and be asleep in one minute," sighed Dr. Chakotay. Katelyn giggled.

"She is a wonder, father."

"What's this about tomorrow," her father then asked.

"Grandma has a plan for getting Kathryn and Chakotay out of the building tomorrow and returning them to Voyager."

"Figured she would have something worked out by now. Sometimes it seems her mind works faster than a computer," and both of them smiled.

"I didn't see Jeremiah at Security. Have you seen him, dad?"

"Yes, he popped in while you were gone. Said he had some errands to run for Captain Gates."

Katelyn nodded, looked over at Jaimie, then said she was going to get something to eat, find Jeremiah to fill him in on the plan and then rest for a couple of hours.

"Been quite a time, hasn't it Katelyn? I must admit to being in awe seeing those two," as he nodded his head to the back room.

Katelyn grinned broadly. "What a thrill, father! They are both so wonderful and though not together yet in their time, so much in love. And Chakotay is even more handsome in person, his eyes are so beautiful . . . so soft and full of compassion."

Dr. Chakotay agreed as he reached out and put his arms around his daughter. "They are very special people, Katelyn. Actually seeing them is going to be another legend unto itself. Well off with you now and be careful. I'll see you in the morning."

"Aren't you going to get some rest dad?"

"I'll spend the night here - much better than that empty house."

A sad look crossed Katelyn's face. "I miss mom so much, and I know you miss her even more, but her ship is due back in a year and we'll all be together again."

He nodded. "I'm just sorry she isn't able to meet them. Especially Kathryn. They are very much alike and she admired Captain Janeway so much." Giving a big sigh, he added, "I just hope Kolobek gets to see them. I think the Captain and Commander would like him very much, and be very proud of him."

"Did you tell them about Kolobek's job?"

"No I thought I would let him tell them. He was supposed to be here by now, but sent a message they are having trouble with the warp core repair and wouldn't get here until morning. I hope he makes it in time, in lieu of Jaimie's sudden plans."

Katelyn nodded, said she really had to go, kissed him on the cheek and left with a wave. "I'll see you in the morning, father."

* * *

Morning was slowly arriving when Dr. Chakotay felt a hand on his shoulder and a gentle shaking.

"Chakotay."

Rousing himself he looked up into the face of Kolobek and smiled. "You made it!"

"Yes, are they still here?"

Nodding, he replied, "Yes, but not for much longer." Looking over at Jamie's bed he noted she was still asleep. "Good, she needs all the rest she can get. Everything repaired?" he asked as he looked back at Kolobek.

"Finally. Turned out to be more of a computer problem than the core itself, but we got both repaired and now it's just minor stuff. Should be ready in plenty of time for next week's departure." Kolobek then sat down and accepted the coffee his father offered.

After a sip he shook his head, lifted his hands in the air in a show of exasperation and said, "What got into Roman? If he had killed them . . ."

"Only time will tell, I guess. Jaimie went over to see him last night but didn't say anything when she got back and I didn't press her."

Chakotay walked over and peeked through the drawn blinds. "Got to keep these closed. Everything is very secret right now as to Kathryn's and Chakotay's whereabouts."

"That's what you said earlier. Do you still think another attempt will be made?"

"Jaimie and Captain Gates seem to think so."

Just then there was a quiet rapping on the back door. Dr. Chakotay motioned for Kolobek to come with him as he moved to the door, slipped the key in the slot and unlocked it. Opening it slowly he stood in the doorway and smiled. "Good morning you two, I trust you got some rest."

"We certainly did," said Kathryn. "I don't think I woke up all night until I heard voices a few moments ago."

"Well," said Dr. Chakotay, "I have someone I'd like you to meet. Captain Janeway, Commander Chakotay, this is my brother Kolobek," and as his name was mentioned, Kolobek stepped into the doorway. Chakotay started to smile and stopped, stunned! Once again he felt like he was looking in a mirror, only a younger version! Kathryn gave a quiet gasp and she, too, stood in astonishment.

Kolobek smiled broadly as he walked into the room and up to Kathryn. Without a word he enveloped her in his arms, kissed her on the cheek and said, "What an honor and pleasure to meet you." Turning to Chakotay he embraced him also, then stepped back and wiped a tear from his cheek. "You study and read about somebody, hear the legends from the time your were born and then suddenly they are real and right in front of you. I . . ." He just stood and silently embraced them with his eyes.

Both Kathryn and Chakotay blinked back moisture in their eyes, then Dr. Chakotay said, "You better tell them the rest, Kolobek. I thought I'd leave it up to you."

"Tell us what?" inquired Kathryn.

Kolobek looked at them, then smiled. "I have the distinct honor of being Captain of the Starship Voyager - 29th Century version, of course!"

"Voyager!" chorused Kathryn and Chakotay. "Oh my," said Kathryn, "I wish we could see her."

"I would like that, but you don't seem to have much time. I can show you on the computer."

A voice from the doorway said, "No, with all they've been through I think they deserve to see our Voyager."

Kolobek smiled and said, "Now why doesn't this surprise me that you're out of bed, mom?" Moving quickly to her he gave a gentle hug. "I'm so glad you are all right. Do you think we can work it out? We're in Space Dock 10."

Jaimie gave a playful slap on his arm. "It's in my plans. Katelyn and Jeremiah should be here shortly with everything arranged." Turning to Kathryn and Chakotay she asked, "And how are you two feeling after all this excitement?"

They both laughed and Chakotay said, "I think I prefer the Delta Quadrant, as hostile as it may be."

At that moment Katelyn and Jeremiah arrived and walked to the room. "Uncle Kolobek!" they both cried out. "You made it!"

After everything settled down Jaimie asked them if everything was set, to which Katelyn and Jeremiah nodded their heads. Jaimie then told her son Chakotay to give them some coffee, as "Kathryn's nerves are shot without her morning coffee, and I have to get dressed."

Dr. Chakotay went with Jaimie to her bed and ran his Medi-corder over her. Satisfied at the readout he looked at her expectantly. "Right," she whispered. I need two 'oops' shots and also a booster to take with me, just in case." He gave her an exasperated look, got the indicated vials and she placed them in her vest pocket, nodded her thanks, and then quickly reached out and gave him a big hug.

"Everything will be okay, son, I promise you."

He looked somberly into her eyes. "When are you going to stop gallivanting all over the Universe?"

"Probably quicker than even you would believe," she said with a laugh.

In the back room, Katelyn and Jeremiah put the cloaking belts on Kathryn and Chakotay. Shortly Dr. Chakotay walked in with the coffee. "Almost forgot," he said sheepishly. While Kathryn and Chakotay sat back and sipped the hot liquid, Jaimie, Kolobek, Jeremiah and Katelyn moved to a corner and soon were deep in a quiet conversation.

Jaimie then said it was time to start implementing their plan. The first thing they would do is go into the main room and open the door and blinds so all five could be seen by passer-bys, but Kathryn and Chakotay were to remain in the room until called. Jeremiah proceeded to cloak Kathryn and Chakotay, whispering, "just enjoy your coffee. It won't be long," and then left the room.

Over the next half hour, various people walked by and would wave or poke their heads in and wish Jaimie the best. The fact most of the family was in the room with her seemed to be the norm and no one questioned. Soon the arrivals slowed and Jaimie stood and announced it was time to start. She called for Kathryn and Chakotay to join them and soon felt contact on her arm.

"Ok, good, now let's review the plan." Jaimie carefully explained how they would leave the building and use a Hover to go over to the Space Port Building. Jeremiah would pilot a Shuttle up to Voyager with Katelyn and a cloaked Kathryn and Chakotay aboard, while she and Kolobek would take her ship for a 'check up' and some needed 'get away for a while' R&R. She didn't feel anyone would question her going for a ride. Kolobek insisted he accompany Jaimie to be sure she was all right. However, the entire group would meet in the Shuttle Bay of Voyager for a guided tour.

Kathryn and Chakotay bid farewell to Dr. Chakotay as best they could in their cloaked entity and then they all left Sick Bay. Jaimie and Kolobek led the way, with the cloaked Kathryn and Chakotay right behind them, and they in turn followed by Jeremiah and Katelyn.

Outside, they boarded the Hover and headed for the Space Port Building. Once there Jeremiah, and seemingly only Katelyn boarded a Shuttle and listed their destination as Voyager. Soon the Shuttle glided out the doors, increased speed and after turning west, headed for a high altitude.

Jamie and Kolobek headed for her ship and after a slow walk around checking various areas, boarded Voyager 2. A Maintenance Ensign had looked questioningly at her at one point, and said the ship was okay, but Jaimie gave the familiar wave of her hand and said, "You know me, Rita, I have to check my own ship." Rita had chuckled and shook her head as she walked away saying, "Yes I know you Jaimie, but take it easy will you. You've been through a lot."

Within a few minutes of Jeremiah's departure, Jaimie and Kolobek in Voyager 2 glided out the doors, turned east and shot up into the air. Once out of sight, Jaimie cloaked her ship and headed west. Soon they were above Voyager and Jaimie 'parked' on the hull, then she and Kolobek transported down to the Shuttle Bay. She noted with satisfaction that Jeremiah and Katelyn were standing outside their Shuttle and assumed Kathryn and Chakotay were nearby. They left as a group for a tour of Voyager.

Jaimie had informed Kathryn and Chakotay to whisper any questions to Jeremiah or Katelyn or she would answer them later. Their first visit was to the Bridge and it was obvious from Katelyn's and Jeremiah's reactions that they were getting a great deal of 'feedback from Kathryn and Chakotay.

Kolobek led them over to the Dedication Plaque, which read, "This ship is dedicated to the Starship Voyager NCC74656, 24th Century and it's Captain Kathryn Janeway, First Officer Commander Chakotay, Lt. Commander Tuvok, Lt. Thomas E. Paris, Lt, B'Elanna Torres, Ensign Harry Kim, the EMH, and all the crew. Their development of Slipstream technology and their valor in the face of a hostile Delta Quadrant will always be remembered." Although unable to see them, Jaimie sensed Kathryn and Chakotay were extremely moved by this.

In Engineering they were astounded by the advanced design and function, much of which was handled only by computer. But as Kolobek had stated, there was still a need for the human factor. The tour continued throughout the rest of the ship, but after an hour they all returned to the Shuttle Bay, where goodbyes were said, with Jeremiah and Katelyn unhappy they could not hug Kathryn and Chakotay.

Immediately following Jeremiah and Katelyn got in their Shuttle along with a couple of Voyager Crewmen who had run up and asked for a ride back to Earth, and the ship sailed majestically out the bay doors and headed for Starfleet Headquarters. Kolobek along with Kathryn and Chakotay, transported with Jaimie to her ship so he could say goodbye and how honored he was to have seen them, and then a few minutes later transported to his Bridge on Voyager.

Voyager 2 released from the hull of Voyager, lifted off and shot forward. Once out of sight of the big ship she set her time ship to Standby and helped Kathryn and Chakotay remove their belts. They both bubbled with excitement over what they had seen on this new Voyager.

"Calm down Kathryn! For heaven's sake, this is 500 years of development beyond the original."

"But it is astonishing!" Then she placed her hand on Jaimie's arm. "Jaimie, that Plaque, I - I'm at a loss for words. We are both very touched and moved by it." Chakotay just swallowed and nodded his head.

Jaimie smiled and slowly moved to her Command seat, laid her head back and took a couple of deep breaths.

"Are you all right, Jaimie," asked Chakotay quickly? "Well I don't know how you could be, that was a silly question."

Jaimie was quiet for a few more moments, then turned and looked back. "I'll be okay, just feeling tired and weak. That walk on Voyager was a little more than I needed at this time." Then she smiled and indicated the seat beside her. "Want to fly yourself home, Chakotay?"

Chakotay smiled and quickly moved in to the seat. "You'll have to give me the commands, Jaimie." The only command he received was Jaimie staring at him in silence.

"Okay, okay," said a smiling Chakotay and cleared his throat. "Computer, recognize the voice of Commander Chakotay."

"Voice recognized. Welcome aboard Commander."

"Computer initiate sequence "Red . . ." then he threw his hands up in the air and turned to Jaimie with a helpless look on his face.

Jaimie laughed delightedly. "Okay, I'll help you here. Say Red 58, White 24, Blue 15."

Chakotay repeated the instructions and asked about the yellow Y panel.

"Oh you remember that do you? Well not this time. Say Portal 47, R2D2, touch the Green T panel, repeat Portal 47, NE24 and Engage."

Chakotay gave the commands and the ship shot forward. Soon a Rift appeared ahead but before entering Jaimie issued new instructions.

"Change to Portal 1, Time 2351." Chakotay gave the commands, the ship seemed to hesitate, made a subtle course correction Jaimie cloaked the ship and it entered the Rift.

In seconds they could sense a difference in space. "Look to your left guys. See that white spot over there? That should be Voyager. We came pretty darn close considering I didn't have time to check my equipment."

Kathryn and Chakotay both turned and Jaimie, smiling mischievously, said, "Okay, Gramps, I'll take over now." Chakotay grinned broadly then watched as Jaimie tapped quickly on the panel and changed course again. Soon they were near Voyager.

Kathryn smiled with apparent glee. "As exciting as the 29th Century was, Jaimie, this Voyager is home!"

"Understood," said Jaimie quietly as she continued to move in over Voyager's hull. Giving more commands the ship settled into its Shadow Mode and matched Voyager's course and speed as it orbited over the Planet Aagot.

Chakotay asked, "How long have we been gone? It seems weeks."

"Yes," joined in Kathryn. "They must be searching every inch of the planet for us."

Jaimie gave a rather secretive smile. "Nothing to worry about. As far as they're concerned, you are still in your Ready Room making up the crew's rotation to beam down to Aagot."

Kathryn and Chakotay both looked shocked. "But we've been gone so long!"

"This is one time my Q really came in handy, now that she's getting control of her powers. She put everything in Super Slow Motion, SSM Mode if you will, and so as far as the crew is concerned only a few hours have gone by."

"But how did she know how to do that?" questioned the ever inquisitive Kathryn.

Jaimie smiled. "When I was in and out of consciousness and trying to give Chakotay commands, remember I mumbled things you couldn't hear or understand? Well Q had entered my mind telepathically and suggested she could do that, so I was actually answering her! She's pretty smart for a Baby Q and despite her learning problems really means well and has done some good things. She's certainly not like Picard's Q!"

Then Jaimie, with a rueful smile, told them it was getting close to when she had to back time the Event. "We're here five minutes before anything happened and you and Chakotay are still on the Bridge and just about to enter your Ready Room."

Chakotay's face became somber. "You're really not going to let us remember anything are you?"

"Sorry, gramps. As far as you're concerned, it never happened."

"Do we have a minute, Jaimie?" asked Kathryn as Chakotay moved back to her.

"That's about all."

Kathryn looked at Chakotay and took his hand. "I love you Chakotay, more than words can express. This will be the last time I can knowingly say that until it actually happens in our time."

Chakotay bent his head and kissed Kathryn, a sweet, tender kiss. " I love you Kathryn, beyond forever."

Unseen by them, Jaimie slipped two miniature injectors into her hand. She liked to refer to them as 'Oops', as in "Oops I forgot." Then she stood and moved back to them.

"I'm sorry guys, got to get you back on Voyager now," and hooked their arms. They all appeared in the Ready Room and Jaimie had them sit in their respective seats and just the way they were when Q appeared. She walked behind Chakotay, said he seemed to look okay and patted him on the nape of the neck. Chakotay started to reach back when his eyes went blank. Instantly she repeated the procedure with Kathryn before she realized what was happening, saying, "yep you look okay too" as she patted her on the neck. Kathryn's eyes went blank immediately.

"Q?" called out Jaimie quietly.

Q suddenly appeared with a big smile on her cherubic face. "Been watching you, Jaimie. Everything Okay?"

"Everything's fine, Q. I need normal time in five seconds and thanks for everything."

Q bobbed her head, said she was glad to help, snapped her fingers and disappeared.

Jaimie then bent down and kissed Kathryn gently on the cheek, moved to Chakotay and kissed him, said "See you soon," then transported herself to her ship. Turning on her view screen she sat down and quietly watched and waited.

Chakotay suddenly gave a start, shook his head and reached back to massage his neck. Glancing at Kathryn he noticed she was shaking her head and also rubbing her neck. "We must really be tired, Kathryn. I almost fell asleep working on these rotations."

"Me, too, Chakotay. Maybe Tuvok's suggestion that we go down in the first rotation isn't so bad after all."

"I have to agree," said Chakotay yawning.

"Well we have the first two groups finished, we'll let Tuvok do the rest." They stood and headed for the bridge, handed the Padd's to Tuvok and left the bridge.

As they walked down the corridor towards the turbo, Chakotay reached back and again rubbed his neck.

"Do you sometimes feel like there is something you forgot, Kathryn?"

Kathryn laughed and nodded her head.

"I just keep having the feeling I've forgotten something," Chakotay continued.

Kathryn reached back and rubbed at her neck. "Actually I do too, Chakotay. I wonder what it is?

"It's probably something to do with the ship," replied Chakotay. "As least that's what I seem to feel."

"Well," she said as she gave her neck a final rub, "no more talk of business. Let's enjoy the rest of today," and they stepped on the turbo.

Jaimie, watching her screen, smiled contentedly. Everything was as it should be. Giving a big sigh and noting she was in desperate need of rest herself, she lifted off from Voyager's hull, turned her ship and headed home.
