The Jaimie Series - Part 2

Voyager Meets Q And Guinan

by Dee Price

Everything was quiet and peaceful as Enterprise was cruising through clear space and its Captain Jean-Luc Picard and First Officer William Riker were sitting back enjoying the serenity of the time. Suddenly from out of nowhere a body hit the deck a few feet away from Picard, rolled over then sat up with a bewildered expression and looked around.

Picard got to his feet, pulled his tunic down, stepped over to this person, who turned out to be a woman and barked, "Who the hell are you and what are you doing on my ship!"

The woman looked up at him and suddenly the confusion disappeared from her face and she smiled broadly.

"Captain Picard! Then I must be on the Enterprise."

Picard's scowl deepened. "I repeat, "Who are you and what are you doing on my ship?"

"Ah contraire, Jean Luc," said this woman with a frown as she remained sitting on the deck. "It's not what am I doing on your ship, its why am I on your ship?" With that she looked up towards the ceiling and yelled "Q! You've done it again."

The words were barely out of her mouth when another body landed almost squarely on her, the flowing robes of this second entry engulfing them both.

"Get off me you big oaf. Can't you ever do anything right?" The struggle to free each other from the robes ensued a few moments more before the first sudden entry onto the Enterprise broke free and stood up.

Picard meanwhile, having watched the two struggle to get untangled, got an amused look on his face. With a quick glance at Riker he said, "It's Q is it? Well, No. 1 that explains everything."

"Not quite Jean-Luc," replied the lady. "This isn't your Q, it's another Q who for some reason has latched onto me and is the biggest klutz in the Continuum, not to mention the Galaxy. She can't get her snapping fingers to do what she wants. She's already had me all over creation and back in forth in time. I'm not sure if she will ever get me back where I belong." The last few sentences had begun to rise in volume until she was shouting.

She looked down at the moving mass of robes. "Q! Get up!"

Q, grunted and groaned in an effort to untangle from the garments that had wrapped themselves around a rather heavyset body, and finally, albeit awkwardly and with some degree of struggle, stood up.

"Where are we, Jaimie? Did we make it this time?"

Picard and Riker were amazed to find they were looking at a female Q and not their known nemesis. Looking from Q to the one called Jaimie brought a scowl to Jean-Luc's face.

"I don't care how you got here or how you ended up with a female Q. I just want you both off my ship!"

Jaimie turned and frowned. "Jean-Luc no one wants that more than I and don't be so snippy! She is trying . . . she just needs to concentrate more." She turned to again face Q.

"Snippy!" barked Picard from behind her. "I am not snippy and you shan't talk to me in such a manner!"

Jaimie simply waved a hand of dismissal and said, "Now Q, you did better. We are at least in the right century but I want you to really concentrate where I am supposed to be, understand? Really concentrate."

Q smiled a sweet smile, nodded her head enthusiastically and raised her hand. Jaimie quickly grabbed it to prevent her snapping her fingers. "I mean it Q. Think! Visualize where I should be."

Just then Guinan walked onto the bridge, and upon seeing the two strangers walked towards them. "Hello. I don't believe I've seen you two on the Enterprise before. I'm Guinan and you are . . ."

Jaimie looked at her and smiled. "Yes, I've heard about you. I'm Jaimie, and this," she said thumbing towards Q, "Is a bumbling, stumbling, can't do anything right, Q."

Guinan, knowing about Q, smiled. "I expected there to be more than one Q, but I didn't realize that any were incompetent."

"Well now you do," retorted Jaimie, "And for some reason she has taken it upon herself to make my life miserable!"

Jaimie turned back to Q, and still holding her hand, looked at this child Q. "Have you been concentrating Q?"

Q bobbed her head, a frown crossed her forehead and she emitted a grunting sound.

"No, just relax, Q. Just think about our destination. No need to grunt."

Looking back at Picard and Riker, who by now were standing there with very amused looks on their faces, she said, "Sorry for the intrusion, Jean-Luc. Wish us luck. God knows where I'll end up this time." With that she released her hold on Q's hands and nodded her head.

Q with a large smile on her face snapped her fingers and they disappeared.

Jaimie hit the surface with a grunt. "Ooof!" Lying prone she mused to herself that least she wasn't embedded in some rock, as this seemed to be a carpeted surface. A thump behind her caused Jaimie to turn to the left and upon seeing the tangled robes knew it was Q so turned her head to the right. Two boots were near her face, and she looked up into the face of Captain Janeway.

Sitting up, she punched the air with both fists and yelled, "YES! You finally did it Q!"

Captain Janeway's startled look had given way to an amused smile as she saw Jaimie.

"That's quite an entrance, Jaimie," said a male voice.

A look across the room revealed Chakotay sitting on a couch and she realized they were in the Ready Room of Voyager.

"You'll never believe where this oaf has had me, but thank God she put us in here. It would be rather hard to explain if we had landed on your Bridge like we did the Enterprise a few moments ago. That Picard sure got in a snit and started spouting and sputtering – and then lowering her voice she did a passable imitation of Picard saying, "Who are you and what the hell are you doing on my ship!"

Janeway's smile gave way to an excited look. "You were on the Enterprise? Did you tell them about us?"

Jaimie gave her an exasperated look. "Oh really, Kathryn."

Suddenly Jaimie's eyes went wide and she threw her arms around her head, ducked into a tight ball and yelled "Incoming."

Back at the Enterprise . . .

Picard yanked his tunic down and he walked back to sit in his chair said, "Thank God we didn't meet up with that Q, No.1."

Riker smiled. "It would have been really interesting wouldn't it, sir."

"Interesting would be putting it mildly." Then they both started laughing.

"Guinan what did you make of that?" asked Picard. Receiving no answer he looked around. "Guinan?" Tapping his Com badge Picard said, "Guinan, would you come back to the Bridge for a moment?"

No answer.

"Computer. Where is Guinan?"

"Guinan is not on the Enterprise."

* * *

There was a loud thump near Q and all Jaimie could see was the intermingling, tangled mess of different colored robes. "Oh no." she exclaimed as she slowly rose to her feet.

"What do you mean 'oh no'," asked Janeway as she watched whoever was in the robes struggling to get straightened out

"Just wait, you'll see," said Jaimie. Then as Q emerged and stood, Jaimie shook her head and with a sigh said, "And it's another fine mess you've got us into you big klutz!"

Finally he other robed individual untangled and jumped to her feet shouting, "Where am I?"

"I'm sorry, Guinan, but right now you're in the Delta Quadrant, on the Starship Voyager, and this is Captain Janeway and her First Officer Chakotay."

Guinan ignored them and started slapping Jaimie's arms. Left, right, left, right, left

"Get me back on the Enterprise!" she shouted. "What do you think you're doing bringing me here? Get me back immediately." And with that she whacked Jaimie on the arm again.

Janeway and Chakotay stood as if mesmerized, watching Jaimie absorb this assault without raising a hand to prevent it. Guinan suddenly stared at Jaimie.

"I'm sorry," she said in a soft voice. I don't know what got into me. That's not like me."

Jaimie grinned. "I know, but I didn't have anything to do with it. Q, here," and Jaimie nodded in Q's direction –" her little trip probably disrupted your normal behavior and from what you heard on the Enterprise I'm sure you realize she can't get people where she wants to take them." Then Jaimie stepped close and whispered in Guinan's ear, "Besides, isn't it fun to sometimes act in a completely and unexpected way and see the expression on people's faces?" As Jamie stepped back, Guinan remained quiet, but a small twitch was seen at the corner of her mouth.

Looking at Kathryn, Jaimie continue. "Today I have been in 18th Century Earth, 14th Century Europe where I nearly lost my life, 21st Century Asia, 10th Century Mid-East, the Enterprise, and now here. It only took her six times to get me on Voyager!"

At the mention of Voyager, Guinan looked at Janeway and scowled. "Voyager. Oh yes, you are the ship lost in the Delta Quadrant. I've heard about you. Sorry about your problem, but I have one of my own at the present time."

Janeway looked at Guinan. "Jaimie?"

"I'm sorry, Kathryn. This is Guinan. She is a person of many lives and currently – or was -the counselor on Enterprise. A slight miss-snapping of fingers brought her to your ship."

Turning back to Guinan, who now stood in her usual quiet persona, "I can take you back Guinan - just not right now. I have to get back home first."

"I need to get home, too, but just where is 'home', Jaimie?"

Jaimie, looking her right in the eye immediately replied, "29th Century Earth."

Guinan's eyes widened. "I might have known. You're a Time Traveler." Jaimie merely nodded her head and then glanced over at Q.

"You do have a choice though, Guinan. You can wait for me, or let Q undo her mistake."

Guinan looked at Q and muttered, "No, after what you've told me and what just happened, I wouldn't trust her with a ten foot pole."

"Keep that thought," countered Jaimie with a big smile, and turned to Janeway and Chakotay.

"Okay - beings Guinan will be here for while, can you fix her up with Quarters? She could actually work as a Counselor for your crew, and God knows some of them need it."

Janeway, looking at Chakotay said, "Of course we can arrange that, but how are we going to explain her presence on the ship?"

Chakotay rubbed his chin for a moment and then smiled. "We're approaching an M Class planet and according to Tuvok's last report should be there in about six hours. We can keep her hidden until then and then tell the crew we have taken her aboard as a passenger/counselor for a while."

"Good thought, Chakotay." Turning to Jaimie, "How long are you going to be gone?"

Jaimie gave an 'I don't really know' look, then said "Probably two to three. It really depends on my next assignment."

Janeway crossed her arms on her chest and looked down at the floor for a moment, and. then turning to Jaimie asked, "I assume you have your belt on?"

"Never leave home without it," said Jaimie smiling.

"As I recall it will cloak for than one person. Chakotay check the quarters and find one for Guinan. Jaimie can cloak and take her there. That way no one will see them."

Chakotay walked over to Janeway's desk, and indicting her computer asked, "May I?" At Janeway's nod Chakotay punched several keys, studied the screen for a few moments, then straightening said, "I have the perfect place and, if you don't mind Captain, it's right next to mine."

Janeway nodded and Chakotay turned to Jaimie. "All right Jaimie, do your cloaking business then follow me."

Jaimie walked over to Guinan and took her arm. "Just don't say anything while we're in the corridors, Guinan."

Guinan, in an irritated manner, jerked her arm away from Jaimie's grasp and then surprised at her own actions, said to herself, Jaimie was right. That Q really has disrupted my harmony and I can't quite seem to get it back.

"What are you going to do to me?" she asked

"Nothing. Just going to make us both invisible while we're outside this room. Now come on, Chakotay is waiting." With that she again took hold of Guinan's arm, punched a button on her belt and they disappeared from view.

"I can still see everything, including you," muttered Guinan.

"Quiet!" hissed Jaimie, "We can see but no one can see us. Good grief, Guinan, you know what cloaking is, now let's go. Chakotay is getting impatient."

Chakotay, standing patiently by the door smiled as he heard Guinan say, "A Native American impatient? Yeah right." Then the doors swished open and closed and the room was silent.

Kathryn suddenly remembered Q was in the room and turned to her. A rather heavy-set woman, but with a cherub looking face and very nice smile thought Janeway. Walking over to her she indicated the couch and sat down. Q, following the example, sat beside her and smiled.

"You're a nice lady," she said. "Not like that old grumpy Captain on the Enterprise. He was quite rude to Jaimie, so once Jaimie told him not to be so snippy, but it didn't help - only seemed to make matters worse!"

Kathryn couldn't suppress a smile. "Called Captain Picard 'snippy' did she?"

"Yes ma'am, and he wasn't at all happy about it."

At that Janeway couldn't hold back any longer and started laughing loudly. "I can well imagine the look on his face and his response to being called that. Wish I could have been a little mouse in a corner and have seen that!"

As Q started to raise her hand as if to snap her fingers, Janeway's look turned to horror and she quickly grabbed Q's hand. "No, no, Q, merely kidding. That was just an old earth expression."

* * *

For the next three weeks things were very quiet on Voyager: no planets, anomalies, or conflicts - in fact, most of the crew were getting bored.

Guinan spent most of this time prowling the ship and talking to everyone she met. Secretly she enjoyed and liked it here on Voyager. It was a new challenge for her, and she enjoyed this 'game' she was now playing. She smiled as she remembered Jaimie whispering about having fun acting in unexpected ways. She was normally a very calm, totally unruffled person and for some reason had experienced a 'rush' in emotion when she had first 'landed' on Voyager and now used this irritated persona when in Captain Janeway's presence. If she had been like this with Picard – well she would have found herself on another ship in no time! Smiling she turned the corner as she headed for the bridge and wondered how long it would take for Janeway to catch on.

She really liked this crew and the sense of family. They were stranded so far from home that she did not want to seem surly around any of them, so had made the conscious decision to help the crew any way she could until Jaimie returned. Where was Jaimie anyway she muttered to herself. Seems she should have been back by now . . . after all she said 'two to three.'

As she neared the bridge she reflected how Janeway had explained that Jaimie was unknown to the crew. She totally understood why and was discreet to talk with Janeway about Jaimie when no crewmembers were around, but now she had to ask the Captain when she thought Jaimie would be back.

As she strolled onto the Bridge she assumed her irritated personality. Immediately she received a frown from Tuvok and amused, yet warm, glances from Harry and Tom, who had caught on to her 'act.' Chakotay had the Bridge and she marched directly to his seat.

"Good morning, Chakotay."

Chakotay glanced up and flashed that warm, wonderful smile of his. "Good morning, Guinan! How are you?"

"Well considering I'm not where I'm supposed to be, as well as can be expected, I guess." It had been explained to the crew that Guinan had ended up in the Delta Quadrant courtesy of Q, which really wasn't a lie, just not the Q everyone thought, and was now hitching rides with anyone willing to take her on board.

Chakotay laughed and said, "Well, you're not alone in that respect."

"Where's the Captain? I must ask her about . . ." and she stopped, catching herself just in time, as she must not mention Jaimie's name. "Some business."

"The Captain is in her Ready Room. Do you want me to let her know you wish to speak to her?"

"No, that's all right, I'll just barge in and disturb her!" and Guinan turned and headed for the Captain's Ready Room.

Chakotay quickly contacted Kathryn. "Be ready Captain, Guinan's on her way."

"Understood," came the reply with a chuckle, followed immediately by "Guinan! I didn't hear you buzz."

"I didn't. The quickest way to see you is just walk in."

"I'm sure Captain Picard did not allow that, Guinan, so it would be nice if you would afford me the same courtesy."

Guinan pursed her lips. "I suppose. It's just that I'm still really angry about being brought here."

"I understand that," said Janeway sympathetically. "We were brought into the Delta Quadrant against our wishes, also. But you must understand it was not Jaimie's fault. It's that female Q who did this to you."

"I understand that, Captain. And speaking of Jaimie, that's the reason I wanted to see you. Where is she anyway? She said she'd be back in two to three weeks . . ."

"She said two to three, if I remember correctly Guinan," Kathryn interrupted, "Not knowing Jaimie you probably don't realize that with her line of work she probably meant months, not weeks."

"Months!" exploded Guinan. "I can't be here that long. Captain Picard must be searching the whole quadrant for me."

"Well I can't answer that, but as Captain Picard knew Q was involved in your displacement, he would know you could be anywhere. About the only thing he could really do is try to contact his bothersome Q, and I'm not sure he wants that. I would hazard a guess that he is doing nothing, just knowing you are safe somewhere - just not on the Enterprise - and hoping things get straightened out and you are eventually returned."

"He would look for me," said Guinan as she started pacing the room. "I know Jean-Luc would look for me."

"Possibly. But we're 60 years from the Alpha Quadrant, Guinan, and even if he finds where you are, there's not much he can do about it. Why don't you just accept it while you're here? The crew really enjoys you. I hear them talking about you all the time."

"You have a nice group of people, Captain. I can't say I don't like them. It's just that this was against my will, you know."

Janeway smiled, but remained silent for a few moments. " From what I hear from the Doctor, you have already reduced the stress level in some of the crew. You have a way with people, Guinan, a way of reaching them and calming even their strongest fears. You are a very stabilizing influence on this ship, and I for one am glad you're here."

Guinan turned and looked at her. She really liked this Captain; she was personable and easy to talk to, not stiff and formal as Captain Picard. No wonder the crew was so loyal to her. It was obvious from talking to them that they really liked this woman. Finally Guinan gave a big sigh.

"In truth Captain, I like it here, I like you and Chakotay, the crew, the smaller ship, and the family atmosphere you have instilled throughout Voyager. It's just that I belong on the Enterprise and I wish to go back."

"Understood, Guinan. But in the meantime until Jaimie gets here and can take you back to the Enterprise, try to relax and just do what you do best. And," she added, "I'm glad to hear you like us. It's not easy being where we are, so far from home, but we have accepted it and are making the best of it, so I'm sure you can in the short time you're 'stuck' with us."

"I'll do what I can, Captain." and then she smiled for the first time. "I really do like it here."

Janeway smiled in return, got up and walking over to her, placed her arm around Guinan's shoulders. "That is wonderful! And we like you and are glad you're here with us."

Guinan left and while walking down the corridor shook her head. Darn! That woman had gotten her to admit she liked it here! And in all the years on the Enterprise Captain Picard had hardly touched her and this woman smiles and puts her arms around you. Darn it anyway! Well even though she belonged on the Enterprise she would enjoy herself while she waited for Jaimie, and help these people all she could.

Meanwhile, Jaimie sat in the town Plaza of the city of Karma on the planet Dayan. The name Karma amused her greatly, as the city definitely did not have Karma! Far from it! The planet was known throughout the quadrant for its violence. Actually it was almost a carbon copy of the old west on Earth in the 1860's following their Civil War. Guns were the law. The old "shoot first and ask questions later" mentality.

Periodically she made stops on her way home from assignments to observe this society. This kind of violence did not exist in the 29th Century and in a macabre sort of way, intrigued her. How could people have so little value of human life?

Today was rather quiet and she was enjoying a lazy respite in the morning sun. Her mind started wandering back to Voyager and especially Kathryn and Chakotay. She smiled. If they only knew why . . . She shook her head and thought about Guinan, wondering how she was doing on Voyager. Better yet, had she adjusted in the last three weeks or was she giving Kathryn a bad time? She chuckled softly - she knew Kathryn could handle her.

The quiet reverie was broken by a ruckus to her right. Looking in that direction she noted the people seemed quite excited about something so she wandered over to find out what it was. Reaching the area she two saw men putting up a sign and was close enough to read the top line. RODEO was all it said. As more of the sign went up it said things about saddle broncos, steer wrestling, calf roping, entertainment and dancing. They were having a party! Maybe that would keep the violence down for a few days. As she walked away she kept searching her memory as to what the word rodeo meant when it suddenly dawned on her what it was. - a contest of man against animals. Well, she just might have to delay her return home and watch that! Guinan could just wait a couple more days.

"Captain, we are approaching an M class planet." Said Tuvok.

Janeway turned to him. "Do we have visuals yet, Mr. Tuvok?"

"In approximately two minutes, Captain."

"Bring it up when we have it," Then turning to Chakotay, "I hope we are able to not only replenish our supplies here but make repairs."

Chakotay nodded and turned to Ensign Kim. "What do your sensors show, Harry?"

Harry smiled as he looked up. "Atmosphere breathable and all the minerals we need!"

Chakotay stood up and turned to him. "Meaning, Mr. Kim?"

Harry's smile froze and he stammered out all the minerals involved in the planet, many of which Voyager was in dire need of, and then added "I'm sorry Commander, for not giving the report as I should have."

Chakotay nodded after a quick glance and wink at Janeway. "Noted, Harry." Turning to Tuvok he gave a questioning look. Tuvok seeing this said, "We are in visual range now, Commander."

"On screen, Mr. Tuvok."

The planet appeared seconds later and Tuvok explained there was a large city in the Northwest hemisphere that was populated.

"Hail them, Mr. Kim," said Janeway standing.

In a matter of seconds he replied, "They have answered our hail, Captain."

"Let's hear it."

A man in a large brimmed hat, some sort of cloth around his neck and a shirt remarkably similar to the one Jaimie wore as her traveling garb, appeared on the screen.

"Welcome folks," he said with a large smile. "I'm Governor Lujan of this area of the planet Dayan, city of Karma. What can I do for you?"

Janeway smiled. It had been a long time since they had been given a friendly greeting like that. "I'm Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation Starship Voyager. We are passing through your space on our journey home and wondering if we might be able to replenish our supplies and make some repairs with the minerals you appear to have in abundance on the planet? We can either make a trade or pay."

The man lifted the front brim of his hat with his thumb and forefinger while scratching his head with the remaining fingers. "I'm sure we can parlay something out in trade, Captain. Where are you folks from?"

"We are from the Alpha Quadrant, a planet called Earth."

"Reckon I've never heard of this . . . Earth, as you call it."

"We are a long ways from home Governor Lujan and it is a long story as to how we got into the Delta Quadrant. Not of our choice I might add."

Governor Lujan smiled. "Well, sometimes things just work out that way. Tell you what, we can give you some coordinates and you can come on down and we'll chat for a spell."

Janeway couldn't suppress her smile as she turned and looked at Chakotay, who was also smiling. Turning back to the screen she replied, "Thank you. I will form a landing party and we will arrive at your coordinates shortly."

Before she could sign off the Governor quickly interjected, "Great, and I assume it will be all your high ranking mucky-mucks so our business can be conducted on an equal level." With that the screen went black.

Janeway turned to Chakotay. "All right Commander - you, Tuvok, B'Elanna and myself. That should be mucky-muck enough for him," she said laughing.

Chakotay smiled and nodding his head glanced at Tuvok and they started for the turbolift.

"You have the Bridge, Tom," said Janeway as she tapped her Com badge. "Janeway to Lt. Torres."

"Torres here, Captain," came the quick reply.

"B'Elanna meet us in the transporter room with a list of materials we need for repairs. We're going down to the planet to 'parlay' a deal."

"Captain?"

"Never mind, B'Elanna," said Janeway laughing. "See you at the Transporter room and she stepped into the turbolift, quickly followed by Chakotay and Tuvok

Jaimie wandered over to the far edge of the Plaza, almost out of view, found a shady spot and sitting down at a table slowly sipped on a glass of water. She had never seen it so quiet here! Suddenly she noticed Governor Lujan and two other men standing by the central monument decorating the middle of the plaza. After a few moments they walked towards a building that she had previously identified as having to do with the business of the city, like a City Hall or something. As they disappeared into an alcove, Jaimie shrugged her shoulders, leaned back and dozed off.

"Jaimie?"

Slowly Jaimie came out of her nap and rubbed at her eyes. Had someone called her name?

"Jaimie, what a pleasant surprise!"

Jaimie's head snapped around and she looked up in shock. "Kathryn! Chakotay! What are you doing here?"

Kathryn laughed. "I thought you knew everything about Voyager." As Jaimie frowned Janeway added, "We are here for supplies and repairs. Tuvok and B'Elanna are finishing up our order now. How nice to see you. You know Guinan is pretty upset at you," she chided gently. "Are you on assignment here?"

Jaimie looked around, but saw no other Voyager crewmembers. Looking up at Kathryn with a sheepish smile she said, "No, I'm on my way home and just make periodic stops here out of curiosity to observe their behavior. They are known for their violence."

"Violence." repeated Chakotay. "We haven't seen any of that. These people are real friendly."

"Yeah well - don't hold your breath," countered Jaimie. "Sooner or later someone will have a duel, and someone will be shot and no one seems to think anything about it."

"Shot?" Janeway asked as she looked around.

"Yes, those instruments hanging at their side are called pistols or revolvers and they shoot a metal projectile that tears right through you. If anyone around you raises one of those weapons, all I can say is, duck!" Then Jaimie smiled. "So Guinan is unhappy with me? I thought she would like Voyager."

"I think she secretly enjoys it immensely," said Kathryn, "she just doesn't want to admit it. Also she keeps pretending she is this irritated person, but somehow I don't believe her."

Jaimie laughed remembering what she had whispered to Guinan. "Well don't tell her you saw me. I know I have another assignment when I return so it will be about two months before I can take her back."

"Two months? Now that might really make her irritated," smiled Chakotay and he and Kathryn sat down beside Jaimie and engaged in casual conversation. As Kathryn and Chakotay talked Jaimie happened to glance across the plaza and suddenly her eyes went wide in horror. Coming across the Plaza and headed directly for them, a wide smile on her face and robes flowing - was Q!

"Oh no!" groaned Jaimie and put her head down on the table.

"What is it, Jaimie?" asked Kathryn, alarm in her voice.

Jaimie simply raised one arm and pointed with her finger. Kathryn and Chakotay both turned and saw Q heading their way. "Has she been here with you?"

"No! And why is she showing up now and why here of all places," grumbled Jaimie with her head still down on the table.

"Hi Jaimie! I finally found you." She threw her arms out wide as she said, "I've been looking all over for you." Q then bobbed her head at Janeway and Chakotay "Nice seeing you people, too."

Kathryn and Chakotay nodded and said their hellos, while Jaimie continued to keep her head down on her arm. "Why? Why are you here, Q?"

Q sat down beside Jaimie with such a flourish her robe sailed over Jamie's head, effectively covering her. Jaimie made no effort to come out from under, so finally a tickled Kathryn reached over and removed the robe.

At that Jaimie finally raised her head and supported it with her cheek in her hand. "Go away Q! Go home! I've had a very pleasant trip and I don't need you stumbling into my life today and mucking things up!"

Q smiled her angelic smile and patted Jaimie on the head. "I've learned a lot since I saw you last, Jaimie. Want to see?"

"No!" chorused Jaimie, Kathryn and Chakotay as they leaped up and backed away from the table.

"Okay," said Q, completely unaware of the alarm in their faces. "I'll show you another time. Why are you all here? Are you going to the rodeo?"

"Hadn't considered it," grumbled Jaimie as she warily sat back down all the while keeping an eagle eye on Q's hands.

"Rodeo?" asked Chakotay.

Jaimie shrugged her shoulders. "It's where people, men to be exact, ride wild horses or steers and the animal tries to throw them off. Seems pretty dangerous to me, but might be fun to watch if you're going to be here a couple of days." Jaimie then turned to Kathryn and frowned as she asked, "How long do you plan to be here, Kathryn?"

She smiled. "Checking your memory, Jaimie? Well I imagine it will take a couple of days to get everything done, plus I'd like to give the crew some time to relax and get off the ship."

Jaimie nodded and turned as Governor Lujan walked up. "Well I think your Engineer got everything all lined up, ma'am. Wanted to ask if you'd like to attend our barbeque. Right tasty! Starts in an hour."

"That sounds nice. Thank you Governor."

Lujan then turned to Jaimie. "Don't reckon I've seen you before little missy."

Jaimie smiled and with a wink at Chakotay replied, "Well I'm not from these here parts, mister," said Jaimie taking on the drawl of the Governor. "I'm from the next holler."

Kathryn and Chakotay looked at one another, their eyes dancing in the laughter their bodies had to suppress.

"Well, don't never mind," Lujan said with a smile. "You're as welcome as these here strangers. You are also welcome to participate in our rodeo."

"Not hardly," drawled Jaimie, "But thanks for the invite."

The Governor then turned back to the Captain and Commander. "You're welcome to bunk down here in our fair city if you've a mind to."

"Thank you, no," said Janeway, "We have work to do back on the ship. We do appreciate the offer, however,"

"As you wish, missy." said the Governor. "I have to leave now and attend to some business. Let me know if you need anything, here?"

"Thank you Governor, we will be fine. And thanks again for your hospitality. I'm sure a lot of my crew will be in attendance tomorrow at your rodeo."

The Governor then tipped his hat as he started to depart. "Ladies, sir, good day to you."

The four of them remained silent as he walked away but finally Kathryn could suppress her laughter no more. After regaining a semblance of control she asked Jaimie, "What do you mean 'the next holler'?"

Jaimie smirked. "Well Kathryn, I've stopped to observe at this planet enough to pick up their quaint lingo. It simply means "over yonder, that-a-way, over the next rise."

"Maybe even just 'the next town' said Chakotay joining in on the laughter.

"By the way," said Jaimie, "What happened to Q? We've been so engrossed with the Governor I didn't see her leave." Then, giving a big sigh, "Thank goodness. Maybe she wont get me in trouble this time."

Chakotay suggested a walk around town then wondered if Jaimie had to cloak. "No, as you can see, my traveling clothes fit right in with their garments. Everyone, even your crew, will think I'm a native."

As they strolled through the plaza Chakotay asked how much trouble she had gotten into from her previous visit.

Jaimie smiled. "Well Gates was at the brig waiting for me just like I knew he would be and grumbled a lot and quite loudly I must say. The Admiral – well he wasn't pleased but knew if he yelled too much I'd simply quit Starfleet, so I was assigned one week in the brig and one week in 'home arrest.' Didn't bother me. Actually it was a very light sentence and I needed the vacation anyway."

Kathryn and Chakotay smiled at this news, glad she hadn't been reprimanded too severely. They continued walking for a while, and then Jaimie suddenly halted, whirled around and yelled for Kathryn and Chakotay to get back into that doorway they had just passed. Not knowing why, they still reacted instantly.

In horror Chakotay and Kathryn watched as two men faced each other in the street. Finally there was a quick movement by one of the men, followed by the same movement by the other. A loud popping noise rang out and both men fell, with one struggling to his feet a few moments later holding his shoulder. The other, however, did not move and slowly some onlookers moved out, looked at the fallen man, then picked him up and carried him away.

"Jaimie----that was inhumane! Why did they do that? Couldn't you have done something about it – stopped it," gasped Kathryn.

"Afraid not - that's the way of this planet. It's what I was warning you about earlier. You just have to be twice as alert when moving around. When you get back to Voyager, make sure you tell your people to be real careful. Maybe it wont occur during the rodeo, but warn everyone."

A short time later the trio's walk brought them back to the Plaza and they were hailed by B'Elanna to meet her at the Hall of Business.

After B'Elanna, Tuvok, Chakotay and Kathryn had gathered, B'Elanna explained all the materials she had arranged to transport so she might begin repairs. Kathryn agreed to the list and B'Elanna left.

Kathryn then told Tuvok to beam back to the ship, that she and Chakotay would return after the Barbeque. Tuvok nodded and contacted Voyager, while Kathryn and Chakotay looked around for Jaimie and Q. They spotted Jaimie back at the table, but Q was nowhere to be seen.

After the Barbeque, Kathryn asked Jaimie if she would still be here tomorrow.

Jaimie looked at Kathryn and smiled. Hooking her thumbs in her waist she said, "You bet, pardner! I wouldn't miss that rodeo. But you better replicate or purchase some togs and have your crew do the same. It will add to the air and excitement of the festivities."

Kathryn said she would consider it and then she and Chakotay returned to Voyager.

* * *

The sun was directly overhead as Captain Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, Kim and the Doctor beamed down to Karma, all dressed in the attire of the cities residents. Chakotay had smiled broadly at Kathryn when they met at the turbolift and commented how beautiful and relaxed she looked in her getup. She blushed faintly and responded that he, too, looked rather dashing. Tom and Harry immediately hurried off, with "Yes ma'am, we will," to Janeway's word of caution. The Doctor just smiled broadly and kept looking around, clearly enjoying his stint out of Sick Bay.

By following the crowd they soon found the grounds where the rodeo was to be held. Chakotay spotted Jaimie in one section and they headed to join her. As they sat down they introduced the Doctor to Jaimie, "whom they had met yesterday." Not entirely a lie, Kathryn had mused to herself.

Shortly, with her robes flowing behind her, Q appeared and headed in their direction.

"Blast!" snorted Jaimie. "I thought she had gone back to the Continuum."

"Hi Jaimie," she said excitedly, while sitting down.

Jaimie just stared at her before finally nodding and mentioning she thought she had left.

"Oh no, I have been getting you registered for the rodeo. Here is your number!"

The impact of what Q had said hit Jaimie like a sledgehammer. Kathryn gasped and put her hand over her mouth, while Chakotay looked at Q in wide-eyed amazement. Only the Doctor seemed undisturbed, just smiling and remarking how nice it was that both genders get to participate in this rodeo, whatever that is.

Jaimie's face had turned from horror to an ice cold, hard look as she stared straight ahead. Time seemed to stand still for Kathryn and Chakotay as they waited in trepidation for her response. Then, in a very calm, yet cold voice, Jaimie said, "Kathryn, Chakotay, will one of you get Q out of my sight, because if I turn and she is still here, I am going to kill her."

However, before they could even think of moving, Jaimie turned to Q. Her eyes were blazing in anger as she hissed vehemently, "You are a lunatic. What do you mean you registered me?"

Q merely smiled and kept bobbing her head. "Yes. I've got you in the bareback riding. This is so exciting!"

"Exciting my foot. I can't and I wont do that, Q. I'll get killed!"

Q's head kept bobbing as she said, "No you wont, it will be fun, Jaimie!"

At that, and knowing discussion with this woman was fruitless, Jaimie grabbed the number from Q and headed down the steps saying, "Then I'll simply withdraw." Q immediately rose to follow, but her foot caught in her robes and she did a stumbling, pirouetting, dance down the steps until righting herself at ground level and then ran to catch up with Jaimie.

Both Chakotay and Kathryn laughed at the sight but then Chakotay asked, "Do you think we should go with them? I've never seen Jaimie so mad!"

"She's mad all right, but I really don't think she can hurt Q. Let's stay here and see what happens. She did say she was going to withdraw."

A few moments later Guinan and Seven appeared, looked through the crowd and upon seeing Janeway and Chakotay headed their way. Sitting down, they exchanged greetings and then Janeway said to Seven, "This should prove quite a different experience for you Seven."

Seven gave Janeway a disinterested look and said, "From what I have been told of this activity, it is a most useless endeavor. It serves no purpose."

Guinan rolled her eyes while Kathryn shrugged her shoulders. "Well it seems to be part of their culture and they like it, so we cannot judge them."

The rodeo soon started and Calf Roping led off the event. Chakotay became quite concerned the animals were being hurt, but a man sitting next to him said not. This was followed by Bull Riding, during which Kathryn, Chakotay and Guinan could not believe the riders were not killed. The Doctor was positive his expertise was needed and it took a direct order from Janeway to make him remain seated. Seven just exuded a look of disgust.

The bareback bronco riding was next and upon seeing the first two riders and realizing what the activity was, both Kathryn and Chakotay became quite worried. Jaimie had not returned and they were getting concerned.

Then the announcer said, "And now our next contestant is a pretty little miss who is going to ride Black Midnight, the horse who has never been successfully ridden. Let's give Jaimie a hand of encouragement."

A look of horror came over Chakotay's face and he started to stand, only to be pulled back down by Kathryn. "I've got to stop her, Kathryn!"

"No Chakotay, we don't have the right. It was obviously her decision to go through with this."

"But she'll get seriously hurt!"

"Again, it was her decision. I'll have the Doctor ready, just in case."

Meanwhile Jaimie after unsuccessfully trying to quit, had listened patiently to the instructions, all the while glaring at Q, who just kept smiling and saying she could do it.

Then the time came. Jaimie cautiously climbed up the fence rails and straddled the horse, but not yet letting her weight down.

"Now listen here, horsie, I'm your friend, okay, just let me ride you for ten seconds and I'll get out of your life." Black Midnight responded by pawing wildly at the dirt and his eyes rolled back as he tried to see Jaimie. At this point, she bent down and whispered in the horse's ear, while gently stroking his neck with one hand and pinching the tip of his ear with the other. To the attendant's astonishment, Black Midnight suddenly became calm.

Jaimie slowly lowered her weight onto the horses back, clenched her knees to his sides, took hold of the rein with one hand, nodded to the gatekeeper and the gate swung open. Black Midnight just stood there. The men around the stall started slapping at the horse with their hats and Black Midnight calmly turned and walked out of the stall into the arena. The crowd gasped, while Kathryn and Chakotay watched in open-mouthed amazement as nothing happened.

Jaimie then leaned forward slightly to whisper, "Aw come on, it's okay, you can do a little . . ." and Black Midnight suddenly exploded into a frenzy of bucking, jumping, twisting and turning. He landed stiff legged which sent bone-rattling pain through Jaime as she clung desperately with her knees to his heaving sides.

"I didn't mean for you to get mad," she yelled, "Take it easy will ya." But the more she yelled the worse Black Midnight bucked.

Then Jaimie suddenly found herself flying up in the air. "Oh my God, I'm going to die!" At the same moment, both Kathryn and Chakotay, horror etched on their faces as they watched Jaimie fly into the air, stood and also yelled "Oh God!" Even though Jaimie knew she was screaming, she could not hear herself because of the crowd's roaring, and waited for that painful moment of crashing onto the ground.

When Jaimie landed she was more than shocked to realize she had landed back on the horse! Frantically she reached for the reins and managed to grasp one. As she yanked on it all it did was turn the horse in a circle as the bucking continued. Then she heard a bell and a split second later found herself flying through the air once again. It was only her amazing agility that allowed her to twist in mid air, land on her feet and then run for dear life for the fence, leaping clear up to the top rung in a single bound and then on over the top.

She landed off balance and sprawled on the ground, then lay still, breathing heavily and thanking the almighty she was still alive. Her next thought was about Q, and she muttered through rasping breaths, "If there is any way possible, Q, I'm going to kill you."

Just then Q knelt down beside her, grinning broadly and slapping Jaimie repeatedly on the shoulder. "See Jaimie, I told you that you could do it!"

Jaimie tried raising one arm to take a swipe at Q but was so exhausted her arm fell back, so she lay there and moaned, "I think I'm dead."

Chakotay ran up and dropped on his knees at her side as Kathryn also arrived. "Are you all right Jaimie?" he asked.

She moaned, "Do I still have two arms in normal position?"

"Yes."

"Are my legs in a normal position?"

"Yes."

"Well if I can sit up and move then I guess I'm all right."

Kathryn and Chakotay helped her, first to a sitting position then to her feet, and she took a couple of tentative steps, while flexing her shoulders and swinging one arm.

"Guess I'm okay."

At this moment, the Doctor, Guinan and Seven arrived. As the Doctor ran his tri-corder over her body, Guinan started yelling at her. "It would serve you right if you got killed, doing a stupid thing like that!"

Jaimie just looked at her and smiled. "But Guinan, if I got killed you would never get back to the Enterprise."

Guinan gave a blank look and then said, "Oh yeah, that's right."

The Doctor announced that other than a bruise on her 'backside' she had survived in perfect shape. "Lucky me - I just can't sit for a couple of days," grumbled Jaimie.

Suddenly Jaimie was surrounded by a mob of excited fans. She had ridden Black Midnight! 'She won! What was that flying through the air trick and could she teach them that, was all she could make out in the din of yelling. Jaimie finally managed to escape the crowd and looked around for her group. Spotting them off to one side, she headed straight for Q and asked quietly, "Did you do that?"

"What? Do what, Jaimie?"

"Flip me in the air and have me land back on the horse. That's not humanly possible, you know."

"I was going to snap my fingers at one point, but I got so excited watching you I forgot all about it!"

Jaimie stared in amazement. What happened was impossible – even for her! Shaking her head in exasperation, Jaimie looked first at Chakotay, then Kathryn. "I really don't know why or how I get into these situations."

"What's this about the Enterprise?" interrupted Seven.

"Precisely my question," added the Doctor.

Janeway and Chakotay's minds raced for an answer, but Jaimie, with her sharp mind, answered calmly, "It's very simple. Guinan was kidnapped off the Enterprise and her kidnapper's ship was hurled into the Delta Quadrant by Q."

"Did I do that, Jaimie?" asked Q with a frown on her face.

"It's okay, Q, don't worry about it," said Jaimie.

At that, Q smiled in her simple childlike way and accepted the story by bobbing her head.

Jaimie continued, but smiled at Kathryn and Chakotay knowing they were waiting to see how she wriggled out of this one. "As for me, I was in the Alpha Quadrant and met up with Guinan at a planet the Enterprise had stopped at. Yesterday she remembered me and I told her I had heard about a planet that could transport ships several thousand light years and offered her a ride. But," she said as she turned to Guinan, "I have to be honest with you. I haven't found that planet in two years of looking."

Internally Jaimie felt great anguish. She had just lied, the first time she had lied since she was a small child and it disturbed her greatly. She prided herself on telling the truth and she just hoped her dismay did not show on her face.

Suddenly she smiled. "No, just kidding!" Turning to Seven she said "Actually I got caught in the wake of a Borg ship returning from Earth after escaping First Contact with the Enterprise - and in breaking loose the slingshot effect threw me here, much to my dismay." There, that was the truth! That had actually happened on one of her assignments and she was lucky to be alive and able to tell about it.

Seven looked at her and raised an eyebrow. "There was one ship that returned from that event, but they made no mention of what you describe."

"How could they have seen me? A tiny ship and they were running like heck for home! The same kind of flight, incidentally, the Borg made when they encountered Species 8472 and had to get away or die."

"Acceptable. Everyone was busy when run . . . returning home."

Jaimie gave an inward sigh of relief, turned and looked at Kathryn and Chakotay and twitched an eyebrow. She then glanced at Guinan, fully expecting her to make a mockery of the story and blow everything wide open. Instead, she was amazed to see Guinan smiling and as the group turned to leave, Guinan sidled up to Jaimie and whispered, "Good one!"

Kathryn, Chakotay and the others in her party beamed back to Voyager, while Jaimie slipped away and returned to her ship. She was going to be very sore and groaned at the thought.

On Voyager, the crew was still beaming down in groups for three-hour shifts of fun and frolic. Those already back were smiling and talking animatedly about the events on the planet. Chakotay and Kathryn returned to the Bridge to relieve other crewmembers and as there was not much else happening, they sat and had a relaxed, private conversation, even admitting it had felt good to have been off the ship with no worries.

Janeway tapped her Com badge. "Engineering."

"Engineering here, Captain," came Torres' reply.

"How are you doing B'Elanna?"

"Fine Captain. All supplies have been beamed to the Cargo Bay and we have a lot of repairs already completed and are now starting on the big ones. Neelix reports he's got a lot of food beamed up already, with more to come. If this keeps up I don't know where we will put everything."

Janeway smiled. "Seems like this has been a golden stop for us. Have you had your leave yet, B'Elanna?"

"No, Captain. Been too busy, but I don't mind. I usually get in trouble on planets anyway," she said with a laugh.

Kathryn could hear Chakotay chuckling at this as she continued, "Well, we will still be here awhile tomorrow, and I would like you to get some time down there to relax."

"Yes, Captain. I'll see how it goes."

Janeway then turned to Tuvok. ". . . and you, Mr. Tuvok. I didn't see you on the planet today."

"I did not feel the need Captain, so I used the time to catch up on my reports."

"Catch up? Good, then go down to the planet for a couple of hours tomorrow."

Tuvok started to protest, when he noticed the Captain raise her eyebrow and tilt her head at him. "If you insist, Captain."

Kathryn then turned to Chakotay and smiled. "It's too bad I can't order us down there again, Commander." She then lowered her voice. " It was fun today, though I don't see yet how Jaimie didn't get herself killed."

"Her good shape and exceptional skill I guess," he said softly. Then laughing he added, "You could order us down again, Captain."

Kathryn laughed. "I could, couldn't I!"

Just then Chakotay felt something on his cheek. Reaching up he was startled to realize he was touching a hand. Looking around he saw no one and instinctively knew it was Jaimie signaling him. He looked at Kathryn and realized she, too, felt a hand on her cheek.

Standing, she said, "Well, Commander as everything is so quiet, how about a cup of coffee?"

"Sounds good, although I still think you drink too much of that stuff."

As they headed for the Ready Room, Janeway looked at Tuvok. "You have the Bridge, Mr. Tuvok. Just don't fall asleep with so much to do!"

"I assure you Captain, I will not . . ." then he stopped as he realized the Captain was making a joke.

In her Ready Room Kathryn fixed two coffees, then they both sat on the couch and waited. A soft groan came from near Kathryn's desk. "If I could move I would de-cloak, but it's too painful to even lift my arm, let alone move up there with you. It even hurts to talk."

Kathryn and Chakotay laughed. "I still can't believe you rode that horse today, Jaimie. You should remember your age," chided Chakotay.

Another groan. "Thanks - I needed that. I can assure you it will never happen again. I have no idea . . ." then a groan was heard and she appeared with a very pained look on her face.

". . . Why or how I got talked into it, I will never know," she said, finishing her previous sentence. "Despite Q's shortcomings she's so childlike and innocent that I actually find myself liking her." She then hesitatingly moved a few more feet to the railing, leaned slowly into it and after placing her head on her arms, added, "Just remind me to hate her for the next Century."

Kathryn smiled. "That will be the day when you hate anyone, Jaimie."

Jaimie lifted her head off the railing and looked at Kathryn. "Well, there is one person I hate and she happens to be on your ship."

"Who?" chimed both Kathryn and Chakotay.

"Seven. It was all I could do to be civil to her today. She - they - destroyed so many planets and cultures, I feel absolute rage when the name Borg, let alone seeing her so close, comes up. They are merciless, inhumane animals and show no remorse or regret for their actions!"

Her body started shaking she was becoming so enraged. Chakotay quickly stood and moving to her placed his arms around her. "It's all right, Jaimie," he said softly. "I understand."

Kathryn, her face filled with compassion, said "I noticed an expression cross your face when she joined our group - I had no idea . . ."

Jaimie gave a big sigh and though her voice was muffled with her face in Chakotay's chest, her anguish was plainly heard by both. "There were times when I would be on a planet, meet wonderful people, and then the next time I stop by there's nothing there - maybe one or two survivors who managed to hide." Her voice broke momentarily, then she straightened up, looked at Chakotay and said, "You have no idea how thankful I am you weren't assimilated by Riley and her group."

"You know about that? Of course you do," he said with a smile and then added, "I give thanks to my Spirits every day."

"No more thankful than I am," added Kathryn in a soft voice. Chakotay turned and gave her a soft smile that said volumes.

"Well, I'm leaving to head for home, but I didn't want to leave before seeing you two once again," said Jaimie. "Tell Guinan I still promise to get her back to the Enterprise, possibly in a couple of months. And I just hope Seven doesn't start putting things together and realize I'm a traveler. The Borg tried to capture one of us once, but Meiko got through the Time Rift and it closed before they got to it, thank the spirits. If they had gotten partially in when it closed they would have ended up in some future Century." Jaimie shuddered at that thought

"It's time," she said suddenly and despite her sore muscles gave each a big hug, said proudly she actually hadn't broken any rules this trip and disappeared. All Chakotay and Kathryn heard was "See ya."

* * *

The next two months were exceptionally uneventful. Most of the planets and the natives thereon that Voyager visited were quite friendly and amenable to trade. The crew was given shore leave several times and everyone was in a happy state of mind.

Kathryn sat working on reports in her Ready Room while Chakotay had charge of the Bridge. Then, "Captain to the Bridge!" came Chakotay's sharp hail, as Red Alert sounded throughout the ship.

"I knew this was too good to be true," muttered Janeway as she ran for the door. "Report!" she barked as she strode forcefully onto the Bridge.

"Two ships approaching at high warp and their weapons are charged," responded Chakotay.

"Have you tried hailing them, Mr. Kim?"

"Yes, Captain, but there is no response."

"I wonder what the problem is," said Janeway as she looked at Chakotay. He just shook his head and said nothing.

Soon the ships were in viewing distance and Janeway called out "On screen!"

The ships looked like Battle cruisers and their intent seemed obvious. "Try hailing them again, Mr. Kim, and keep hailing them every few seconds."

"Yes ma'am."

"Curious," said Tuvok. "Their weapons are charged, but their shields are only at half strength."

"Curious indeed," replied Janeway. "Opinion, Commander?"

"Uncertain, Captain, unless they have stronger shielding than we do and only need fifty percent."

"Arm our Phasers and Photon Torpedoes, Tuvok. I don't like the looks of this at all."

"Armed and ready, Captain."

The Bridge became deathly silent as everyone watched the ships continue their relentless approach. "Keep it steady, Tom. Let's try to appear peaceful, but be ready for evasive maneuvers."

"Yes, Captain."

Suddenly Harry called out, "They're firing!" and Voyager shuddered under the double blow. "Shields are holding."

"Looks like this quadrant has a penchant for fire first and talk later," said Chakotay.

"Appears so, and I for one am getting rather testy about it," said Kathryn gritting her teeth as they were rocked by another series of blows.

"Shields still holding, Captain. They are too far away yet for their phaser fire to do much damage," said Harry.

"This is too much," muttered Janeway. "Open a channel."

"Open."

"This is Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation Starship Voyager. Why are you firing on us? We have done you no harm and are merely passing through this space on our way home."

The reply came in more phaser fire. Suddenly a guttural voice said, "We allow no one in our space. You will be destroyed for trespassing!"

"We did not know we could not go through your space. Can we discuss this?" said Janeway.

The ships continued to fire then broke formation, with one circling to the port, the other diving below Voyager, while repeatedly firing their phasers.

"A hull breach on Deck 5 is imminent, Captain," said Tuvok.

"I guess diplomacy wont work. Target Engineering . . . cripple them, but don't destroy them. Maybe we can talk yet," called out Janeway.

Voyager started firing their Phasers, but it seemed to do little damage. The battle continued for the next thirty minutes, with Voyager returning fire as the alien ships danced and darted about Voyager. Shields were weakening and damage reports were beginning to come in from all decks.

"Tuvok," shouted a plainly irritated Captain, "I've had enough. Target their Bridge. If that doesn't stop them, target their weapons array."

Tuvok fired at the nearest ship and then they all watched as the Bridge exploded. However, the ship kept firing. Suddenly Voyager's view screen showed the Bridge of the vessel, which was in a shambles. Then the alien appeared, a grotesque lizard-like face.

"You are a menace to our space!" he shouted.

"We do not wish to destroy you. Please, can we not talk about this and make arrangements for a peaceful passage?" asked Janeway.

"No! We will be joined soon by the rest of our fleet and you will be destroyed!"

"Who are you and what space is this?" asked Janeway

"We are the Brayen and I am Lemet. But names do not matter, Captain Janeway of the Starship Voyager. You WILL be destroyed!" and the screen went black.

Voyager then shuddered under a massive explosion that apparently came from the undamaged ship, sending the Bridge crew sprawling. Fires broke out in various panels, and the crew raced to put them out.

"What was that, Tuvok?" shouted Janeway as she pulled herself back to her feet.

"A different weapon than what they have previously used, Captain, and it has caused much damage!"

"They want to play rough, we'll play rough. Target their weapons array with Photon Torpedoes!"

"Ready," came Tuvok's response.

"Fire!"

Tuvok fired two Photon Torpedoes, one at each ship. The enemy's ships exploded violently, followed by more explosions throughout both ships. Then one last explosion and the ships disappeared from space, pieces hurtling in different directions.

Janeway collapsed onto her chair. "Why? Why would they not talk? Why would they choose to die so needlessly? I just don't understand, " she said in despair. Then turning to Tom, "Tom get us out of here at Warp 8. Let's put as much distance between their oncoming fleet as we can. And Harry, keep a sharp lookout at all times. Extend those sensors as far as they will reach in all directions!"

Both echoed, "Yes ma'am's.

Kathryn stood and surveyed the damage around the Bridge and shook her head, then looked at Chakotay with a helpless expression on her face.

"You did what you had to do, Captain. This was clearly an unprovoked attack and eventually we had to defend ourselves." Turning to Harry he said, "Harry, they said they were the Brayen. Where is that planet? It should have shown on our sensors."

"We haven't come close to a planet for the last three days, Commander. I have no idea where it is."

"Maybe it's ahead somewhere. Keep a sharp lookout. We don't want to meet anymore of their ships, especially after discovering they have a certain weapon that can cause so much damage."

Chakotay then turned to Kathryn who had sat back down in her chair. "Looks like our peace and quiet is gone. It will take us days, if not weeks, to make repairs and use all our supplies doing it."

Kathryn nodded her head. "Agreed, and that means we have to find a planet and soon."

"As long as it's not Brayen," said Chakotay smiling ruefully.

Janeway then placed her hand on her forehead and said, "All this has given me a headache." Turning to Tuvok, she asked, "Any casualties?"

"Twenty-three people have reported injuries, some serious, but we have not lost anyone, Captain."

"Well that's one consolation. I think I need some coffee after all this. Chakotay you have the Bridge. Gather up all the damage reports you can and see me later. We'll go over the priorities." She then turned and headed for her Ready Room.

It was an hour before Chakotay reported to the Ready Room, Padds in hand.

Slowly and meticulously they went over the damage reports and set priorities on which to do first. At last they came to the final Padd and as she set it down on the desk, Janeway leaned back and gave a big, but exasperated, sigh.

"Well, I'm glad you finally got that over with. I was getting bored," said a voice.

Both Kathryn and Chakotay looked around, smiles starting to show on their faces. "Jaimie! Where are you?" asked Kathryn.

Jaimie materialized lying on the couch. Sitting up she smiled and said, "That was quite a battle, Kathryn. And I agree with what Chakotay said earlier, they didn't give you a choice. However, it turned out as it was supposed to."

"Supposed to?" asked Chakotay.

"Yep. It all happened as it did originally, which of course, is what you just went through." She then hesitated and got a look on her face as if to say that was a dumb statement, then laughed. "Anyway, you know what I mean. And no matter how many times I read about this battle in your logs, it was still exciting to observe it first hand."

"You saw the whole thing!" exclaimed Kathryn. "Where were you?"

"Just far enough away to avoid being hit by all the debris, then when it was over I had to make a quick approach because I knew you were going to hightail it out of here." She then glanced out the view port and a sad look came over her face. "Sorry about the casualties," then in an almost absent-minded tone, added, "I'm afraid you're going to lose one."

"Who?" came the quick response from Chakotay.

Jaimie initially got a surprised look on her face as she realized what she had said, but shook her head as she turned back to them. "Can't answer that."

"But if we know, maybe some special attention will prevent it," said Kathryn quickly.

"Oh honestly, Kathryn!" Jaimie growled. "It has to happen. I can't prevent the original happenings, you know that - at least not in this case."

"A little touchy today, Jaimie?" said Chakotay softly.

"I guess. Sorry."

All three became silent as they contemplated the situation. Kathryn then reached back to start massaging her shoulders, a sign Jaimie recognized as worry about her crew. She was sorry she had mentioned one crewmember was going to die. One day she would learn to keep her mouth shut.

Chakotay stood and moved to Kathryn's side. "Here, I can reach that area better. Let me massage your shoulders." Kathryn offered no resistance and Chakotay started to kneed and massage the area. As he did, a look of relief started to spread over Kathryn's face. Glancing up she saw Jaimie, who was now standing with a smile on her face.

"Shades of New Earth, eh Kathryn," she said softly.

Kathryn's face colored and Chakotay glanced up at Jaimie, a small smile turning up the corners of his mouth.

The massage continued for a few moments, then Kathryn broke the silence. "Were you there, too, Jaimie?"

"Afraid not. There were a few occasions in the past, however, before you first saw me that I dropped by, but I always kept my distance. It just gave me such a huge thrill to see Voyager, if only in the distance. I didn't dare make my presence known at that time. So you see, I can use restraint," she said laughing lightly.

Chakotay finished the massage, Kathryn looked up and smiled, then moved to the replicator. "Tea, anyone?"

Both accepted the offer and then sat until she brought the cups over. After a few sips, Kathryn looked at Jaimie. "So, I have the feeling this is not just a social call."

Jaimie silently nodded, but did not look up. Finally she asked, "How is Guinan doing?"

"Just great!" said Kathryn enthusiastically, followed by Chakotay saying, "The crew really likes her. I sure wish she would volunteer to stay."

Again Jaimie remained silent. After a few more sips of her tea she looked at them. "Well maybe you should hail her. I'm ready to leave."

Kathryn looked at Jaimie for a few moments. "It's not going to happen is it? I was so hoping your silence might indicate Guinan was going to stay." Sighing she tapped her Com badge. "Guinan?"

Everything was quiet momentarily until finally the soft, melodious voice was heard. "Yes, Captain?"

"Could you report to my Ready Room please?"

"Of course, Captain. On my way."

A short time later, Guinan rang and entered the room.

Seeing Jaimie she smiled broadly. "Well, I see you finally made it. Does this mean I'm finally going back to the Enterprise or do you have some other cockamamie excuse?"

Jaimie shook her head. "Go pack your things."

"What do you mean pack my things! You know I was transported here without my things!"

"No need to raise your blood pressure, Guinan," said Jaimie raising her hands. "We can leave right now then."

Guinan walked over to Kathryn and Chakotay, admitted how much she enjoyed the crew, the ship and especially its Captain and First Officer. She then gave each a hug, and then turned and joined Jaimie. "I suppose you have to do that cloak thing," she growled.

"Quit acting like a grouch. We'll just beam up." With that she took hold of Guinan's arm, looked over at Kathryn and Chakotay, smiled and pressed a button on her belt. Guinan smiled and lifted her hand in farewell as they disappeared.

Kathryn and Chakotay stood for a moment staring where the two had been, then Chakotay took a deep breath and said, "Well that's it, then."

Kathryn walked over to the couch and dropped down in a disappointed attitude. "I was so hoping she would change her mind."

"Me, too. The crew really liked her, but it was her right to go back," said Chakotay softly.

"I suppose. Maybe. . . ." then Kathryn's voice trailed off.

"Maybe what?" asked Chakotay.

"Oh, with Jaimie being a Traveler, maybe. - well, maybe she'll bring Guinan back for a visit sometime."

Chakotay smiled. "With Jaimie, you never know. Look, I'll go back to the Bridge. You stay and take it easy for awhile."

Kathryn sighed. "We have to tell the crew Guinan isn't on Voyager anymore. What or how I'm not sure, but I'm afraid I'm not up to it at the moment."

"We'll think of something later," said Chakotay.

Just then a big thump, followed by a rolling object on the floor entangled in a multitude of robes momentarily startled them. As the mound flailed around disentangling from the robes, Kathryn and Chakotay both started to laugh.

"Q!" exclaimed Kathryn. "What are you doing here?"

A muffled reply of "Just a minute" was heard. Then Q emerged, gave a big smile upon seeing Janeway and Chakotay and said, "I did it right this time. I'm on Voyager."

"That's right, Q" said Chakotay. "Jaime would be proud of you." At that statement Kathryn punched him on the shoulder. Frowning, Chakotay asked, "Why did you hit me?"

Kathryn glared at him and muttered under her breath, "Don't mention Jaimie's name."

"Why shouldn't he say Jaimie's name? Has something happened to her?" asked Q.

Kathryn felt her face getting hot as she realized Q had exceptional hearing. Glancing at Chakotay she saw he had an amused look on his face, which made her blush even more.

"No Q. It's just that she's really, really busy right now with a very important mission and doesn't want anyone to disturb her." She then flinched as Chakotay, trying to stifle a laugh, banged her knee with his.

Q looked at them then smiled that cherubic smile. "You are coming up on planet in a little while. Maybe she's there." And with that she snapped her fingers and disappeared.

"Well I tried," said Janeway as she slapped her Com badge. "Bridge!"

"Bridge here," came Tuvok's response.

"Mr. Tuvok, are sensors showing a nearby planet?"

"Checking long range sensors, Captain. No, there is not anything showing at the present time."

"Keep me posted, Tuvok."

"Yes, Captain."

Kathryn looked at Chakotay then turned to the view port. "I hope we do see a planet shortly. We could all use some R and R after this experience with the Brayen."

Chakotay nodded his head. "As well as supplies and time for repairs. B'Elanna has been a magician to keep things running as well as she has."

* * *

The next morning Voyager was orbiting the planet Aagon. Their first contact had been friendly and an invitation extended. Chakotay was busy setting up shore leave for the crew, and B'Elanna, Harry and Tuvok were already on the planet searching for the needed minerals and replacement parts for repair work. Janeway was on the Bridge, waiting for Chakotay to finish so they could go down and formally meet with the Imperial Governor. She looked forward to a few days here.

An hour later Chakotay came onto the Bridge. "Everything is done and all crew rotations for shore leave established, Captain."

"Excellent, Chakotay. Let's head for the transporter room and go through the formalities." Turning she nodded to Tom Paris. "You have the Bridge, Mr. Paris."

"Aye, Captain," came the response and Tom stood to take the command seat.

"Also, Tom, let them know we will be beaming to their coordinates in a few minutes " With that Kathryn and Chakotay left the Bridge.

The formalities with Imperial Governor Lei were quite pleasant, except for one thing. The Governor's daughter, Marike, was also at the beam down point to extend a welcome, and made no effort to hide her admiration for Commander Chakotay. Kathryn felt a twinge of resentment - or was it jealousy? Chakotay was cordial and gracious to her and did not seem to react to Marike's open flirtation. Well, thought Kathryn, she had no claim on Chakotay and he was free to do as he pleased. But if that were true why was she feeling this way?

Lei suggested a walking tour to see some of the immediate area, so the group started out, with Janeway walking with the Governor and Marike clinging tightly to Chakotay's arm. The tour took them through the Politico Building, which housed all the governing departments, the Education Building and then to a City Park. Kathryn glanced back occasionally, making various comments to Chakotay and noted with some pleasure that Chakotay seemed embarrassed by Marike's attention.

In the park there was a large gathering and a ceremony of some sort was going on. The words, music, movement and the festivities themselves enchanted Kathryn and she noted several couples going through some sort of ritual. Turning to the Governor she asked what the ceremony represented.

Governor Lei termed it a 'Cleansing and Unifying of the Spirit and Body'. That immediately caught Chakotay's attention as he moved away from Marike to Kathryn's side. Governor Lei noted this and smiled.

"It's beautiful isn't it Kathryn," he said softly.

Kathryn looked up at him and smiled. "Magnificent, Chakotay. Almost an uplifting experience just to watch it." They stood silently, almost mesmerized by what they were seeing and both having slight smiles on their faces.

Governor Lei nodded his head as he closely watched the Captain and her First Officer. "Maybe I am being a little forward, but perhaps you and the Commander would like to go through this ceremony, Captain."

Kathryn and Chakotay looked at each other and back at the ceremony, noting only one more couple was yet to experience this event. "Is there anything special we have to do?" asked Kathryn quietly.

"We do not believe in long or complicated ceremonies on this planet Captain. All both of you have to do is clear your mind of all thoughts, agree to go through the ceremony and experience the ritual. You will be told when to bow your heads, kneel, so forth. It is quite simple, Captain."

"It reminds me of some rituals in my native village when I was a young boy," said Chakotay. "But I do not remember their purpose. I was a little rebellious and not interested in the beliefs of my people at that time."

Lei smiled sympathetically. "That is unfortunate, Commander. Perhaps then it is appropriate you experience this cleansing and unifying spirit now with your Captain."

It was obvious to Kathryn that Chakotay was interested and he looked at her, waiting for her response. Suddenly Marike moved up to Chakotay's side.

"I will do it with you Chakotay," she said smiling.

Governor Lei immediately held up his hand. "Marike! You know it is not appropriate for you at this time." Marike gave a pout and stomped off. Lei smiled. "She is young and impetuous. Her time will come." He then looked at Janeway. "If you and the Commander wish to participate, now is the time Captain. The last couple is at the altar and preparing to go through the arch."

Kathryn looked up at Chakotay and saw he was looking at her. His interest was obvious. Oh well, she thought, why not. I could probably use some cleansing of the spirit.

"What do you think Chakotay? God knows we've had some dark moments on this trip. Something like this, at this moment, seems right."

Chakotay smiled and turned to the Governor. "Looks like we're going to, Governor."

Governor Lei smiled. "Wonderful!" He then walked them to the entry point. "Just take the path towards the altar with your arms linked and step through together. At Arch 2 join hands before your step through. The Priest will direct you with the rest."

Kathryn and Chakotay smiled at each other, linked arms and started slowly down the path, enjoying the beauty of the flowers and a small crystal clear stream that neither had noticed before. It's rippling, bubbling sound seemed to set off the ambiance even more. Arriving at the first arch they stepped through together and continued down the path. At Arch 2 Kathryn released Chakotay's arm and clasped his hand. It felt so warm and pleasant and Chakotay felt a tingling sensation as he smiled at her. They nodded and stepping through followed the path towards the altar. Halfway there two young women stepped out and sprinkled petals of flowers along the path before them, handed Chakotay a flower and indicated with their arms to continue.

Reaching the altar, soft melodious music started. The Priest indicated for them to bow their heads and then he started a quiet, calm recitation of words, which neither Chakotay or Kathryn could understand, but during which a feeling of peace and calm was experienced by both. When the words and movement of the Priest ended, he indicated for them to kneel. The Priest then placed his hands on their shoulders for a moment, then touched the area over the heart with one hand, first on Chakotay, then to Kathryn, and then back to Chakotay. Chakotay, without know why, impulsively passed the flower the young woman had given him on the path to Kathryn who accepted it, smiled and sniffed deep of the fragrance. The Priest smiled and nodded his approval of the action and once again there were enchanting words, music and arm movements by the Priest. Then Kathryn and Chakotay were handed a cup containing pure water and each took a sip of this cold, refreshing liquid.

At this time it was indicated for them to rise and the Priest then motioned for them to again join hands and step through Arch 3. Meeting them on the other side, the Priest smiled at them, and placing his hands together in a prayer position, said a few more words, and then bowed his head. Silence followed for several long seconds, but during that time Kathryn experienced a feeling of such complete peace and calm that it almost overwhelmed her. She had never felt anything like that before in her life! Stealing a glance at Chakotay she knew immediately from the expression on his face that he was experiencing the same sensation. Finally the Priest looked up, smiled, made another short statement and raising his arm indicated for them to walk through a gate, which would take them out of the ceremony area.

As they exited the gate Chakotay placed both hands over his cheeks for a moment and smiled. "What a feeling I had come over me. It was so beautiful, so peaceful – calm - yet exhilarating, Kathryn!"

"I know, Chakotay. I experienced the same thing. I can't even begin to explain what I was feeling. Was it the soft music, the liquid or the words? They almost seemed hypnotic."

"I don't know. But I will remember this moment forever."

"As will I Chakotay."

They started walking through the town square and noticed that as all the natives passed them, they smiled, placed their hands together and bowed their heads. "What a beautiful planet. Everyone is so nice. I'm really going to enjoy a few days here," said a smiling, happy Kathryn

Soon they came to a table that was in the shade and decide to just sit and watch everything. There was a slight breeze, which kept the area comfortable and Kathryn dreamily closed her eyes for a moment.

When she opened then she suddenly sat bolt upright. There was Q! And she was walking directly towards them. Nudging Chakotay who had also closed his eyes to savor the fresh air, she said simply "Q."

"Hi Captain, Commander," she called out as she walked up to them.

"Hello Q. I assume this was the planet you referred to awhile back," said Janeway.

As Q enthusiastically nodded her head, Chakotay asked if she had found Jaimie yet. Q smiled and said, "Yes, I saw her about two hours ago."

"She's here!" exclaimed Janeway. "Maybe we'll get to see her." Then looking at Chakotay, "It must mean she finished her 'chore' and is on her way home."

"Must be," Chakotay concurred. "Knowing Jaimie, though, she'll probably find us at a time and place of her choosing."

"Then this must be the time and place, Chakotay, because here I am!" and she suddenly appeared directly in front of them.

"How nice to see you again, Jaimie. I see Q also caught up with you."

Jaimie groaned and looked at Q. "Yes, but thank God there isn't a rodeo on this planet! By the way Q, remember that stand across town that had all the fresh fruit? Will you walk - and I said walk - to it and get all of us some?"

"Sure Jaimie, but why do I have to walk? I can do it faster by snapping my fingers. I'm getting the hang of it now, aren't I Captain?"

Jaimie interrupted. "I want you to walk Q, because I want to talk to Kathryn and Chakotay in private and if you walk it will give me that time."

"Oh, ok. You know I'll do anything for you, Jaimie."

"Thank you very much, Q," said Jaimie. "See you a little later." Q smiled, turned with a flourish and started walking across the Square.

"Whew," said Jaimie as she turned to Kathryn and Chakotay. "So how was your trip? Anything happen on the way here?"

"Other than Q dropping in on the floor of the Ready Room?" asked Janeway smiling.

"She doesn't quite have the landings down yet, does she?" said Jaimie as she burst out laughing.

Kathryn and Chakotay joined her in the laughter, and then Kathryn got serious. "So, did you get Guinan back safely to the Enterprise and what problems did Captain Picard give you?"

Jaimie held her hand up. "Slow down Kathryn! Yes, I got her back, yes she was glad to see everyone, no, Jean-Luc didn't give me any trouble. Anything else you'll have to ask Guinan yourself."

"She's here," shouted both Kathryn and Chakotay together.

"Whoa! No need to shout. Yes, but she wanted to put her things away first. You'll see her later."

Kathryn hesitated, absorbing what Jaimie had just said. "Put her things away? What are you saying Jaimie?"

"Oh for crying out loud. You're really dense today, Kathryn! What does it sound like I'm saying? Guinan liked Voyager and the two of you, plus the crew very much. She explained all this to Jean-Luc and I think he realized he couldn't stop her. So Guinan will be on Voyager – temporarily - for awhile anyway," and then Jaimie sighed. "You have me talking crazy!"

Kathryn and Chakotay both smiled and Kathryn slapped her hand down on the table in pure delight. "That is wonderful news, even if it's only for a while."

They all sat down and engaged in small talk for a few minutes until Kathryn casually mentioned the Cleansing and Uniting Ceremony she and Chakotay had gone through and what an exalting feeling had passed through them both.

Jaimie's face registered complete shock. "You did what!"

They explained the ceremony and Jaimie placed her hands over her face, but didn't say a word.

"What's wrong, Jaimie? Was it wrong to do this? Did we not do it according to the ship's logs?" asked Chakotay.

Jaimie finally looked up and Kathryn and Chakotay saw tears rolling down her cheeks. "My God, I had forgotten all about that with this business of Guinan!" She then smiled. "No, you did not do anything wrong, but it will take you awhile to accept what it means."

"Meaning?" asked Kathryn

Jaimie again looked at them in amazement. "Wasn't the ceremony explained to you? Didn't the ceremony itself mean anything to you?"

Kathryn and Chakotay shrugged their shoulders and said not really. "It was a cleansing of the spirit is the way I remember Governor Lei explaining it," said Chakotay.

"Well," said Jaimie, "I then have the pleasure of announcing that it was a marriage ceremony and in the eyes of the Great Spirits and Laws of this planet you are husband and wife."

For a moment both Kathryn and Chakotay sat there stunned. Then Kathryn literally exploded with "What!"

Chakotay turned and looked at Kathryn, and then slowly a smile started to spread across his face until his dimples were like canyons.

Jaimie repeated. "In the laws of this planet, your spirits have been cleansed and united and you are now married." Her smile got larger as she continued, "Actually I think it's rather neat, and from that look on Chakotay's face, I'd say he's happy about it, too!"

Kathryn, still in shock, slapped her fist down on the table. "No! No! That can't happen. We - I can't do that!"

Chakotay, who was now clearly and obviously pleased, said "Why, Kathryn? Why can't you?"

"Because it's not right!"

Before anyone else could say anything, "What's not right, Captain? Are you unhappy that I'm back on Voyager?" was heard from the side.

Everyone turned to see Guinan standing there. Jaimie quickly explained what had happened. Guinan smiled and said, "Well, unless you both have a mate back in the Alpha Quadrant, I think it's wonderful because it is very obvious to me that you love one another. Jean-Luc has always been sorry he wouldn't let his relationship with Dr. Crusher go further and be out in the open. He complained to me on several of his introspective moods, about Starfleet being too restrictive at times."

She then moved closer and taking one of each of their hands, said, "Congratulations to both of you, and may this union endure all the hardships you will undoubtedly have here in the Delta Quadrant."

Kathryn looked at Chakotay, who was still smiling and whose eyes clearly showed his feelings.

"Stop it, Chakotay! You know we can't have this happen."

"Personally, Kathryn, I see nothing wrong with it. Yes, there will be difficulties, but we are sixty years from home and entitled to personal lives. Besides, you know I . . ."

Kathryn quickly held her hand up to stop him, knowing full well what he was going to say. "Be reasonable, Chakotay. What will the crew think? We must maintain a command structure and we can't be worrying whether the other is going to be injured or killed." At that she turned and looked at Jaimie with questioning eyes.

Jaimie, who was obviously enjoying this whole scene, quickly shook her head. "Don't pull me into this Kathryn. You two did this on your own. You could have questioned the ceremony further, but I will add this . . . what is done is done. It cannot be undone. This planet does not have a divorce or dis-unifying law, if there is such a word."

"Well, we will never be here again, so we can just consider ourselves unmarried then!" Kathryn sputtered.

Guinan looked at them and found Kathryn's behavior irritating. "What is it about you! I'm sorry, Captain, but it doesn't matter what planet or where. If you marry within the laws and ceremony of any planet - you - are - married! You just can't consider yourself not married."

Chakotay reached out and held up his open hand. Kathryn looked at it, recognizing what she had done on New Earth. Looking up at Chakotay she saw such love in his eyes, she felt her legs start to tremble and her heart race. Turning her head she looked at the always-smiling Q, only she wasn't smiling now. Then she looked at Jaimie and Guinan, who stood very quietly looking back at her.

Deep down she admitted to herself this pleased her. The experience of the ceremony itself gave her such a feeling of peace and joy. She couldn't do this - could she? Placing her hands on her hips she lowered her head and closed her eyes for a moment and then looked up at Chakotay who was still patiently holding his hand to her. Well, she didn't want to make a scene and decided she would discuss this further with Chakotay when they were alone and back on Voyager and not the focus of this group.

Although still believing this wasn't right, slowly, hesitatingly, she raised her hand to his. As their fingers entwined, she gave Chakotay a soft smile. His hand felt so warm and strong – suddenly she realized her body was tingling!

Jaimie stood there, a contented smile on her face and then turned and slapped hands with Guinan and then Q. She knew it would take quite awhile before Kathryn would really accept this, but it would happen . . . eventually.

The End
