It's All About Love

by Dee Price

The crew of Voyager was euphoric, virtually beside themselves in their happiness. Two days ago they had come across a wormhole and upon investigation their sensors seemed to indicate it led to the Alpha Quadrant. After discussion with all Senior Officers it was decided to go through, come what may on the other side.

They emerged in the middle of a pitched battle between what they quickly ascertained were two Klingon and two Cardassian warships. Knowing from the Hirogen message relay station that the Klingon's were now Starfleet allies, they quickly joined in and disabled one Cardassian ship, much to Chakotay's delight. The other Cardassian ship, now outnumbered three to one turned and ran.

One Klingon ship hailed Voyager and after first offering thanks for the help, acknowledged they knew of Voyager and their plight in the Delta Quadrant, and offered to escort them to DS9. Janeway immediately accepted.

Eventually they reached hailing distance and Janeway had just finished her conversation with Captain Benjamin Sisko, who had warmly welcomed them back to the Alpha Quadrant, as well as giving instructions on the docking port. The crew then settled back to await reaching DS9.

Kathryn smiled warmly at Chakotay as she sat down. "We made it, Chakotay. We're home!"

Although Chakotay had smiled back at her it was not a happy smile. He said very seriously, "You are home, Kathryn, but I'm not so sure about some of us."

"Chakotay! It was the Cardassians the Maquis were fighting, not Starfleet."

"True, but Starfleet offered us no aid, no help of any kind, and did not stop the Cardassians from taking over our homeland. Believe me, it did my heart good awhile ago when we defeated the Cardassian ship and made the other run for home with its tail between its legs. But I'm just not sure what kind of welcome the Maquis on this ship are going to receive from Starfleet. In their eyes, even though we have served on Voyager for five years, they probably still consider us criminals."

"I can't let myself believe that, Chakotay. And I wont let them take any of the Maquis on this ship into custody."

Chakotay was about to respond when Tom called out, "There it is, Captain! DS9 just ahead."

Tom soon maneuvered Voyager to the Docking Port and when the latches clamped on everyone broke into large smiles and a few loud cheers were also heard. The smiles soon changed to puzzled looks when Captain Sisko hailed them and informed Captain Janeway that everyone must remain on board for a short time. No reason or explanation was given.

Janeway looked at Chakotay. "That's strange. Well maybe they just wanted more time to prepare our official welcome!"

Ten minutes went by and then Ensign Lopez hailed them from Security. "Captain! They are boarding now and -- mmmph."

"Repeat the last part of your message Ensign Lopez. We didn't understand," said Janeway.

Silence.

Kathryn looked quickly at Chakotay and he stood and started racing for the door. Just then the Bridge doors opened and a Lt and two Starfleet Security men entered with phasers drawn.

"What the hell is this," demanded Chakotay, only to be quickly grabbed by the two Security men. Chakotay twisted loose from one of the men and half turning towards Kathryn yelled, "Captain!"

Startled, Janeway quickly walked towards Chakotay, and looking at the Lt. snarled, "Tell those men to release my First Officer!"

"Can't do that, Captain," he replied in a surly tone.

"You can and will Lt.! What is your name?"

"Lt. Benson. And I have my orders to take Commander Chakotay into custody."

"Under whose orders?"

"Starfleet," came the abrupt reply.

"Well they haven't informed me of this so I am telling you right now as a superior officer to release my First Officer immediately!"

"I have my orders, Captain. Maybe you don't understand orders anymore, having been in the Delta Quadrant on your own for so long," came the sarcastic reply.

A murmur went through the Bridge as Janeway's eyes opened wide.

"Lt!" barked Chakotay. "You will not speak to Captain Janeway in that manner. I'll have your hide for that, mister."

Just then a Captain walked onto the Bridge and Janeway immediately addressed him. "Captain, I don't know what's going on here, but I demand you tell these men to release Commander Chakotay!"

The Captain turned to the Security men and nodded his head. Chakotay immediately pulled both his arms free and walked down beside Kathryn.

"I'm Captain Linn. I apologize for the . . . exuberance of Lt. Benson, Captain."

"Would you please tell me the meaning of all this, Captain?" asked Janeway.

Captain Linn looked decidedly embarrassed and his face started to flush. Before he could answer the Bridge doors opened to reveal two more security men, this time with a twisting, turning, growling Lt. Torres in hand. Captain Linn immediately told them to release her and as B'Elanna jerked her arms free, she snarled in her most angry Klingon tone, "Just what the hell is going on here?" Then turning to Janeway, "Captain, what's happening? There are Starfleet Security all over the ship taking us into custody!"

"I'm trying to find that out myself, B'Elanna. Come down here with us." B'Elanna, with another growl at the two security men joined the Captain and Chakotay.

Captain Linn's Com badge then chirped and he was informed everyone had been rounded up and were all in the Mess Hall at the moment. There were, however, several names unaccounted for. As the names were listed, Chakotay turned and looked at Janeway.

"Each of those people is dead, Captain! They all died defending this ship. Now tell me what is going on . . . right now!" said Janeway in a very angry tone.

Captain Linn, obviously distressed at this assignment, rubbed at his forehead before answering. "Starfleet has ordered me to detain all Maquis on board Voyager, including Tom Paris, and once all suspects are rounded up . . ."

"Suspects!" shouted Chakotay." "What the hell do you mean by suspects?"

Captain Linn looked at Chakotay and gave him a half-smile, then turned back to Captain Janeway. "This is very embarrassing for me, Captain. But I do have my orders to take them all to the Starfleet Detention Center. We have a ship standing by for Transport. I'm sure it's just a technicality that will all be cleared up shortly. I . . . we." as he nodded to his men, "don't understand this anymore than you, but we are at war and . . ." He gave up trying to explain and just stood there.

"You may be at war, Captain," snarled Chakotay, "But we aren't. We've been in the Delta Quadrant for God's sake, fighting aliens who didn't know us and didn't trust us because they didn't know us!"

"Easy, Chakotay," said Janeway. "Captain Linn, this is my ship, and as such my word is the law and I am not giving these people up to you. They all joined Voyager voluntarily. Commander Chakotay destroyed his ship to save Voyager; each and every one has served on this ship loyally as Starfleet personnel and has done a damn fine job. Commander Chakotay, Lt. Torres, Lt. Paris, Lt. White Rain and everyone else are some of the best people Starfleet could ever hope to find, and if I'm given a new assignment I will ask each and everyone to serve with me again. Tom Paris was paroled to me and has earned the respect of the entire ship," she said glancing down at Tom, who ironically had been sitting quietly with a smug look and his arms folded across his chest during this entire sequence of events. "Starfleet is doing a disservice to all these people and me, by this action and I will not let you arrest them!" the last said with a rising and very angry voice.

Unseen by everyone on the Bridge during this exchange was the entrance of Captain Sisko. He cleared his throat and as everyone turned his way, walked quietly down to stand beside Captain Janeway.

"I'm very sorry for this, Captain Janeway. For this to happen after all you have been through and in what should be a joyous occasion is most distressing to me."

"Distressing to you, Captain Sisko! When I talked to you a few minutes ago you gave no indication this was about to happen. Why, Captain, why? The least you could have done was warn me!"

"I'm very sorry, Captain. When I was informed they were going to do this, I almost blew a blood vessel. But perhaps we should talk in your Ready Room."

"Absolutely not! I am not leaving my people. Anything you have to say you can say in front of them. They are my officers!"

"Very well. Then may I suggest that you, Commander Chakotay, Lt. Torres, and Lt. Paris go with me to your Ready Room?"

"Captain, I must protest," said Captain Linn. "I have my orders."

Sisko whirled on Captain Linn and with eyes blazing said, "And where do you think they will go, Captain? Huh? You think they will just walk off this ship and disappear? Now stand down your men!"

"Yes sir, sorry sir," said a chagrined Captain Linn. Turning to his Security force he told them to assemble out in the corridor. Once they were off the Bridge, Captain Linn turned back to Captain Sisko. "I will wait here on the Bridge, Captain."

Sisko nodded and then as Janeway headed for her Ready Room the rest followed. Once inside Sisko threw up his hands in disgust. "I'm really very sorry about this, Kathryn. I couldn't stop them. I even contacted High Command while you were docking."

"What can they possibly charge them with, Benjamin" They were fighting for their homeland against the Cardassians."

"They did stop Starfleet ships and steal equipment and supplies, and people were hurt."

"But that's not enough to warrant this action in light of their service in the Delta Quadrant. No, Benjamin, if they arrest the Maquis on this ship they might as well arrest me, too."

"Kathryn, no!" said Chakotay sharply. "You can't jeopardize your career for us."

"Why not, Chakotay? You risked your life for me. Every single day all the Maquis risked their lives to protect Voyager, with some paying the ultimate price. After the first month I never once questioned their loyalty. I even stopped thinking of any of them as Maquis! We were all just the ship's personnel of Voyager . . . we became a family."

"That won't wash, Kathryn. Starfleet will only say that was because we were trapped in the Delta Quadrant, and that it was Voyager or spend the rest of our lives there."

"I'm afraid he's right, Kathryn," said Sisko. "Their minds appear made up. What charges they will bring I have no idea, but they will take them into custody."

"Not if we don't leave this ship, Benjamin. Not if we leave DS9."

"They will hunt you down as fugitives, all of you," said Sisko quietly.

"He's right, Captain, said B'Elanna. "And none of us want you to be put in that position."

Janeway paced for a minute while rubbing her neck. Glancing at Chakotay she smiled and said, "I could sure use those strong fingers now, Chakotay." Then she stopped pacing. "Everyone else is being held in the Mess Hall. Let's go down there. Chakotay, B'Elanna, Tom, stay with me," and she moved for the door.

Sisko looked at Chakotay and B'Elanna. "I always knew Kathryn as strong-willed, but it appears she is even more so now," and he started chuckling.

Chakotay and B'Elanna only gave him a tight-lipped smile.

*********

When Captain Janeway, Captain Sisko, Commander Chakotay, Lt. Torres, Lt. Parris and Captain Linn, along with the Security detail trooped into the Mess Hall the room became quiet as a tomb.

Janeway looked around the room at 20 angry faces. They had a right to be angry, as she herself was furious. She spotted Lt. White Rain and Ensign Lopez, and their normally calm, passive faces were riddled with thunderclouds. Uncertain as to what she was going to say to them she stood there, searching all the faces. Finally she sighed and looked at Sisko.

"Captain Sisko, I refuse to let any of my people, and that includes Starfleet personnel, leave this ship. Each and every one of them will be detained aboard Voyager until I personally speak to Starfleet High Command." Turning to Chakotay she said, "Commander, you are in charge until I get back."

"Yes, Captain."

"I'm sorry Captain Janeway," interjected Captain Linn. "He cannot be in charge. He is under arrest!"

"Then detain yourself on Voyager, Captain Linn," barked Janeway. "Captain Sisko, lead the way."

"Captain Sisko, I have orders," wailed Captain Linn as he stepped towards Sisko.

"Need I remind you, Captain Linn, that you are on board Voyager, and as such, Captain Janeway has every right to do what she is doing! Now lead or follow, but get out of my way!"

Janeway and Sisko strode through the doors. Captain Linn, frustrated by his sense of duty and yet his feeling for these people that this wasn't right, looked helplessly at Chakotay. "I'm awfully sorry about this Commander," then ran after Sisko and Janeway, followed by the confused Security detail.

B'Elanna laughed. "I actually feel sorry for those poor Security fellows. They're running around like a bunch of puppies on a leash."

Chakotay smiled, and then turned to the group. "All right, people. As far as I'm concerned you may all go back to your duties. Just remember what the Captain said. We are detained for the time being. The Captain is doing all she can." Then he, B'Elanna and Tom left the room before anyone could ask questions they didn't have the answers to.

Meanwhile a very angry Captain Janeway strode briskly through the corridors of Voyager, and then debarked onto DS9, with Sisko trying to keep up. This is one angry lady he thought to himself. I just hope if I ever need help she's on my side.

Immediately upon entering his office, Sisko placed a call to High Command. Janeway's face registered numbing shock when the visage of Admiral Paris appeared on the screen

"Admiral Paris, with all due respect, sir, what's happening on my ship is insane! How can Starfleet even think of such action? Even your own son, Admiral! What are they thinking?"

"Captain . . . I apologize to you. I know it's difficult for you to understand at this moment . . . your return should be a joyous occasion and your accomplishments to survive this long . . ." He hesitated and looked down for a moment before continuing. "These orders come from me, Kathryn. The Maquis that are in prison have shown some unrest of late and we feel they are up to something. With your return and the knowledge of Maquis aboard, well we . . . they are criminals, Kathryn, plain and simple. Detaining Starfleet vessels, stealing our supplies and equipment. They must face those charges."

"Admiral, we have been in the Delta Quadrant for five years. They have fought to save Voyager, and everyone of them have performed magnificently and loyally, with some giving their lives."

"We realize those possibilities . . ."

"Possibilities!" Kathryn exploded. "They are fact, Owen! They served better than some of my Starfleet personnel. They are brilliant, loyal officers and personnel, and this action is obscene. Even your own son, Owen!"

"I have no son, Kathryn."

Kathryn's mouth popped open in complete shock. She felt the blood drain from her face at this statement, and stared with unbelieving eyes at Admiral Owen Paris. He looked back impassively.

"Owen," Kathryn said in a whisper of a voice.

When Admiral Paris again spoke he had taken on a command voice.

"Now, Captain, to the business at hand. We will take them into custody and they will stand trial. To Starfleet's credit, this trial will take place almost immediately. I suggest you comply with this order, Captain," he said with emphasis on the word Captain.

Janeway stared at him unbelievingly. Then she looked at Benjamin Sisko who had stood quietly to one side during this entire exchange. Sisko's face showed nothing, but his eyes were full of hurt and anger.

Kathryn then straightened her posture, turned and looked back at the screen, lifted her head and said defiantly, "I will not allow Starfleet on my ship. You will not take any of my crew into custody, is that clear? If you attempt to take the ship by force, I will order my crew to fight back, and we are good fighters, Admiral. We learned some new tricks in the Delta Quadrant."

"Captain . . . Kathryn, be reasonable," he said in a patronizing voice. "That will serve no purpose and only make you a villain as well. Give them up and take a well-deserved leave. See your family. Enjoy your return."

"ENJOY my . . ." she exploded. "How can you possibly say that to me! I repeat Admiral. We will fight this, and if by chance you are successful, I insist you take me into custody as well, and if you refuse then I will resign my commission!" and with that she stormed out of the room. Captain Sisko quickly followed without excusing himself, leaving Admiral Owen Paris staring into an empty room.

*********

Janeway strode angrily through the doors onto Voyager. Stopping short she barked out "Computer! Seal these doors by Authorization of Janeway Delta 47!"

Acknowledged. Doors sealed per Janeway Delta 47."

"And computer, no one, that is NO ONE my override that order except me."

"Understood."

As Janeway turned to head for the Bridge she was startled to see Benjamin Sisko standing there. "Oh, Benjamin. I'm sorry; I didn't realize you had followed me. I'll let you out."

"No need, Kathryn. I'm with you on this."

"Benjamin! No, don't risk your career. This isn't your fight."

"I'm sorry, but I'm staying. You are risking your career standing up for the Maquis. Knowing you as I do, I believe you when you say they are some of the finest officers you have ever seen and if you are willing to risk your career standing up for what you believe, then I'll take a stand with you. It's about time Starfleet stopped being so high and mighty and investigated before doing this to you and your crew."

Janeway saw the look in his eyes and knew argument was futile. She smiled. "I appreciate this, Benjamin, and I know Chakotay and the rest will too. They tried to warn me this would happen when we entered the Alpha Quadrant, but I didn't believe them." She looked again at Sisko, reaffirmed the resolve in his eyes and nodded her head. "Let's get to the Bridge."

As Janeway and Sisko reached the Bridge, she indicated for the six Starfleet Security personnel, still following in confusion, to remain in the corridor, but nodded to Captain Linn to join them. Chakotay immediately stood as they entered and approached Janeway. Before he could say anything, Janeway tapped her Com badge, looked momentarily at Captain Linn who had stopped just inside the bridge doors, and said, "Transporter Room, lock on to the six Starfleet Security personnel outside the doors of the Bridge and confine them to the Brig." Sisko smiled to himself. This lady doesn't miss a trick.

Chakotay then asked, "What's the news, Captain?"

"Not good I'm afraid, Chakotay. They insist on arresting all the Maquis" and glancing at Tom, "And you, Tom, so I told them I will not allow anyone on or off this ship. We'll fight them if we have to Chakotay."

"No, Captain. You can't risk your career for us. You are Starfleet; it's your life! Don't throw it away just for us."

Kathryn looked at him and placed her hand on his upper right arm, and then in a warm but soft voice, said with great feeling, "I think you would do no less for me, Chakotay."

"You know I would. I would fight for you with my dying breath, but it's not the same. You are risking a lifetime of work for what . . . 20 Maquis? Your original orders were to capture us. Save your career, Kathryn," he said softly as he took hold of both her arms.

Powerfully deep feelings filled the room and as goose bumps started rising all over his body, Sisko became aware for the first time that these two were very deeply in love and he marveled at how well they had kept their feelings hidden until this moment, possibly even from each other. He walked to where they were standing and hesitated, suddenly unwilling to interrupt the electric moment passing between them. Then he spoke, "Captain, Commander, knowing Starfleet, I think it best if we start immediately preparing our defense."

Chakotay turned and looked at him with wide eyes. "Our defense, Captain Sisko?"

"Yes, Chakotay, Benjamin is on our side, too, and he's right. Even though I have sealed the doors, they could still attack by transporting as they did initially."

Chakotay reached out his hand to Sisko and said, "I find it hard to believe you would also be willing to jeopardize your career for us, but if true you're a great and understanding man."

Sisko smiled and took firm hold of Chakotay's hand. "I don't know about that, Commander, but I know Kathryn well enough to know that what she says about the Maquis on this ship must be true, and for what it's worth, I think what Starfleet is doing is wrong."

Chakotay nodded his head, glanced at Kathryn, then back to Sisko. "Is it possible to raise shields while docked?"

Sisko immediately tapped his badge. "Major Kira."

"Captain, where are you? There are Starfleet buzzing all over the station and messages flying back and forth that I find hard to believe!"

"Well believe them Major. I'm on Voyager and will be staying here."

"Are you sure, Captain? I mean . . . really sure that's what you want to do?"

"Yes, Major. But I want to advise you Voyager is going to raise shields, and I want you to lock out the Override so no one can disrupt this action."

Moments of silence followed. Finally in a voice that indicated she was smiling, she said, "Understood . . . done."

Sisko nodded to Janeway who turned immediately to Tuvok. "Raise shields, Mr. Tuvok."

Tuvok hesitated, raising his eyebrow as he did. "Captain, I feel it is my duty to remind you . . ."

"You've reminded me, Tuvok, now raise the shields."

"As you wish, Captain." After a moment of tapping at his controls he looked up. "The force field is in effect, Captain."

"Good, now that will give us a little time to get organized."

"What are we going to do, Captain," asked Tom from his seat at Helm.

Janeway turned to look at him. She had yet to mention it was his father's orders that were responsible for all this and she hesitated briefly before answering. "We're going to fight, if necessary, Tom. I'm not letting them take anybody off this ship." Then turning to Chakotay, added, "And if by chance they are successful and get onto the ship and take you and the rest into custody . . ."

"She intends to resign her commission, Chakotay, if I may call you that," Sisko quickly interjected, "Which left the Admiral quite speechless."

Chakotay looked at Kathryn. "No, Kathryn, we're not worth that. Please think about what you're doing." Then he gave her that smile that always made her feel like her knees were about to buckle, and added, "You could come visit me in prison."

"Stop that Chakotay. This is no time for jokes," but despite herself she found herself smiling back at him. Then she looked at Tuvok and asked for ship-wide communication. After receiving a nod from Tuvok she said, "All hands, this is the Captain. I'm sure by now you are all well aware of what is happening. My orders are simple. I will not relinquish any of the Maquis to Starfleet, have ordered the doors sealed and have erected a force field around the ship. Therefore, no one may leave Voyager. I repeat -- NO ONE may leave Voyager. We must all be on full alert and we will fight if necessary to defend all members of this crew. If any of you have objections to this, please register your complaint immediately with your department head, who will then inform me. Janeway out."

Kathryn then walked over and sat down in her chair. Chakotay motioned for Sisko to take his First Officer's chair and Sisko smiled his appreciation. Then, although it might have looked improper to anyone entering the Bridge at that time, Chakotay proceeded to sit on the floor, cross his legs and face both of them. Five minutes of silence followed while Janeway waited word from the different sections. Finally the reports started coming in. When finished there was not one crewmember that had voiced an objection.

"Amazing! Simply amazing, Kathryn, that everyone on this ship is supportive of your action. This is unheard of!" said Sisko with a big grin.

Kathryn smiled. "It just shows the bond between all of us on Voyager, Benjamin. We don't even think of them as Maquis. Don't you see . . . we, they . . . doesn't exist. We have all been through so much together . . . We are like a family! The Maquis were only fighting the Cardassians, and I think they were justified in that action."

Sisko looked down at Chakotay and smiled. "Have you brainwashed your Captain, Chakotay?"

Chakotay simply shook his head no and looked at Kathryn. "That's the first time I've heard those words from her, Captain. She's formed that opinion just by our working together and I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say we've been loyal to her as Captain and also loyal to her as a friend. A lot of decisions were made in the Delta Quadrant, some good, and some bad. We invented new technologies and some failed and some worked brilliantly, like the Slipstream that brought us home faster. But the important thing is we worked and cooperated together, and she brought us all home."

Kathryn gave a sarcastic snort. "Home yes, but I certainly didn't expect this kind of welcome." Then without thinking she added, "Makes me wish we were back on New Earth." As soon as the words were out of her mouth she blushed furiously. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."

Chakotay gave a warm smile and Tom added, "Makes me wish we were all on New Earth, Captain," and then he laughed.

"New Earth? Perhaps you should explain, Kathryn," said Benjamin.

"I'm afraid it's a rather long story," said Kathryn frantically trying to recover.

"Well, I would like to hear it sometime. It sounds very intriguing," Sisko said grinning.

Just then B'Elanna burst onto the Bridge. "Captain! I was just walking by the Docking Port and I heard noises on the other side. It sounded like they were getting ready to set charges!"

Janeway looked at Chakotay who was quickly getting to his feet. Captain Sisko turned to Tuvok and said sharply, "Hail the Station and get me visual."

A moment later Major Kira appeared and Sisko urgently asked what was happening and where was Odo.

"Odo has gone to Voyager's dock. He's concerned about all the sudden movement that way by Starfleet Security."

"Patch me in to him immediately, Major," said Sisko.

"Odo here, Captain. I'm just reaching the Docking Bay now."

"Stop them, Odo. Whatever they are doing stop them and tell them I'm on board."

"Yes, Captain." Then placing his hand on a Security man's shoulder, said "One side please, one side," and made his way through the group to the doors. "What's going on here? Whose in charge?"

"I am sir, Lt. Mason. We're just getting ready to blow the doors."

"By whose authority?"

"Starfleet High Command," came the reply.

"And who signed those orders, Lt?"

"Admiral Paris, sir."

"You must stop this action right now. Do you realize Captain Sisko is on that ship? He's trying to talk to Captain Janeway. As Constable I am in charge of security on this station and I will not allow this to happen. Now back off your men, Lt!"

"But I have orders," countered Lt. Mason.

"I repeat, back off while I contact Captain Sisko and have him contact Starfleet."

Lt Mason hesitated, and then turned to his men. "Hold off on setting those charges." Then he turned back to Odo. "I'll give you ten minutes, sir."

"Yes, well Starfleet seems in an awfully big hurry." Then tapping his badge he hailed Captain Sisko.

"Sisko here. What have you found out, Odo?"

"It seems Starfleet High Command has ordered this action, sir. I have stopped them for the moment, but the situation is rather volatile. In fact I intend calling the DS9 Security here, and suggest you contact Starfleet."

"Who gave the order?"

"Admiral Paris, sir."

Janeway, Chakotay and B'Elanna turned quickly to look at Tom. He smirked, and looking at B'Elanna said, "Now why doesn't that surprise me."

Janeway immediately went down to Tom and placed her hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, Tom, I couldn't bring myself to tell you a moment ago that the arrest order came from him."

"Yeah, well that's ok, Captain. What's that saying . . . The more things change, the more things stay the same?"

Meanwhile Sisko walked over to Tuvok's station and requested he contact Admiral Paris. After a few moments Tuvok reported he had Starfleet on the line.

"Let's have visual, Mr. Tuvok," said Sisko quietly.

As Admiral Paris appeared on screen he quickly looked around the room. Tom rose to his feet and faced the image of his father while placing his hands behind his back. Janeway and Chakotay immediately moved up on either side of Tom, while Sisko moved up beside Captain Janeway. A moment of awkward silence fell over the room as Admiral Paris looked at Tom.

Finally Sisko's voice rang out. "Admiral, may I ask why the order to blow open the Docking Bay doors? That not only puts Voyager in danger, but this station as well."

"We want a quick end to this altercation, Captain Sisko, with as few injuries as possible."

"But I am on board Voyager trying to discuss this situation with Captain Janeway."

"I wasn't aware that was your intention, Captain."

"With all due respect, sir, you never bothered to find out!"

Admiral Paris leaned forward and his face started turning red. "You will not address me in that tone, Captain!"

"My apologies, Admiral, but the fact remains a peaceful settlement might be reached."

The Admiral stared at Sisko a moment and then looked at each individual in the room before he spoke. "The only settlement that can be reached, Benjamin, is the surrender to Starfleet of Voyager and its crew."

Janeway then spoke for the first time. "Admiral, why the urgency on this? Why the arrest orders at this time? Couldn't this have been discussed in a civil manner so that you could see for yourself the loyalty and brilliance of these people? Voyager would never have made it home without their superior ability and help."

The admiral sighed. "You have been in the Delta Quadrant for five years, Kathryn. We are now at war, a war you or your crew knows nothing about. We have no idea where the allegiance of the Maquis would fall on this . . ."

"All the more reason to have had an immediate dialogue, Admiral," Janeway interrupted.

"I'm sorry, Kathryn. The arrest order stands," he said in visible irritation.

"At least give me 24 hours Admiral," said Sisko. "You Lt. outside said ten minutes, and that's not enough time to accomplish anything."

Suddenly Chakotay stepped forward. "I'm the one you want, Admiral. I offer myself for surrender. Just let the rest of these people go."

Then Tom stepped up beside Chakotay. "I'm a convict. I offer myself along with the Commander."

"No! Both of you stand down," barked Janeway. "I wont let you do this."

The Admiral smiled. "Your loyalty is admirable, Captain, but the fact remains you yourself are now disobeying orders by refusing to allow us on your ship to take the Maquis into custody. Or haven't you considered that?"

"Oh, I'm well aware of my action, Admiral," she said in a dark tone.

The admiral looked off screen for a moment then turned back to Sisko. "You have your 24 hours Captain Sisko. After that, if you are not successful, we will take the ship . . . by force if necessary." The screen went black.

Kathryn immediately turned to Sisko and smiled. "You have bought yourself an out and us some time, Benjamin. Thank you."

"On the contrary, Kathryn, this is a double-edged sword. It gives them more time to prepare an offensive, as well as us. And I didn't do it to give me an 'out' as you expressed it. I told you I believe in what you are doing. Maybe it was the situation I just went through with the Prophets that brought me to this decision, but I have just reached a point where I am a little tired of taking inane orders. So it's about time I stood up to be accountable on my beliefs. Now, as I don't think your amendable to giving up your crew, may I suggest we get something to eat, then gather up all your section heads and security people and start planning what you want to do."

"An excellent idea, Benjamin. I can't say I recommend Neelix's cooking, but it's all we have at the moment with most systems except life support going into the shields."

As the group walked off the Bridge, Captain Linn stood looking after them for a moment, then squared his shoulders and followed.

********

After dinner, all of Voyager's Senior Officers, the Security Chief and Captain Sisko adjourned to the Conference room to discuss the situation. Captain Linn, as per his custom, sat in the room but at a distance. As the group started to discuss their options Captain Linn suddenly stood and walked over to Captain Janeway. She looked up at him.

"Yes, Captain?"

"Sir, if I may . . ." He hesitated briefly and then suddenly reached up, took off his Com Badge and offered it to Janeway. "I would like to offer my services in this matter, Captain."

"Captain Linn," said a shocked yet concerned Janeway. "Are you aware of what you are saying? This could jeopardize your career!"

"Yes maam, I realize that, but when we were on our way to DS9 we were all talking about how rotten this was. You've been lost in the Delta Quadrant for five years and then to have this happen instead of a celebration, well it just isn't right!"

Kathryn rose to her feet, looked the young man in the eyes and saw clear resolution there. "You wont be able to turn back if we accept your offer, Captain. Might I suggest you take a little more time and think it over?"

"No maam, I've been thinking it over since this whole mess began. Captain Sisko has more to lose than I do. I'm young, I could find something else to do."

Captain Sisko smiled. "Are you insinuating I'm an old man, Captain?"

Captain Linn flushed bright red and he stammered, "Oh no sir! I didn't mean anything of the kind. I just meant that I . . . I mean I . . ."

By now everyone in the room was laughing and Captain Linn just stood there, not knowing what else to do,

Janeway patted him on the shoulder "Think it over a little more Captain. That's a very important decision."

"All due respect, as I said before I have thought it over. In fact I might be able to help more than you think. You see, when we were assigned to this duty Starfleet somehow had a feeling you might resist." He hesitated and glanced at Chakotay . . ."and, well I heard them talk about their plans."

All eyes in the room immediately focused in on Captain Linn. "You mean you know what they are going to do, Captain," asked Chakotay looking him directly in the eyes.

"Yes sir. The Docking Doors were a ruse to see how you would react, but I don't think they planned on Captain Sisko being here. The meat of their plan is to divert you while the Defiant slips around from the far side of DS9 and concentrates on your weakest point."

"With our shields up I don't think our weakness will be as prominent. That again is something I'm sure they didn't count on us doing. So you really can't help us, Captain. Thank you for the offer anyway. Maintain your position and don't ruin your career," said Janeway.

"Captain . . . if you could allow me to escape I could find out their plans . . ."

A mixture of shock, disbelief and distrust flooded Kathryn's face. "Escape, Captain? And how can that be without also letting Starfleet onto Voyager? And how could we . . ."

"I know, I know, you think I'll tell them of your plans. But you have no plans, Captain! You haven't discussed anything yet."

"He's right, Captain," said Sisko.

"And I can let you know of their plans," Captain Linn continued excitedly. "If you know, you can be ready or counteract, and with each counteraction there is less possibility of bloodshed. It will be a standoff and force them to talk to you!"

Janeway looked at this young man a moment longer, then turned to her chair and sat down. Looking around the table she said, "Comments people? Opinions?"

Chakotay leaned forward. "I believe Captain Linn, Kathryn. I'd like your permission to work something out with him."

Kathryn looked at Chakotay. "Such as?"

"That remains to be seen once we start talking. I'd like to include B'Elanna and White Rain for their ideas if you don't mind," said Chakotay smiling.

Kathryn looked at Sisko and the others around the table, thought a moment, then nodded her head. "Agreed. Get on it right away." After the four had left, Janeway took in a deep breath, and then looked at Paris, Kim, Tuvok and Sisko. "Now, the remainder of us will also try to work something out and then compare. Any ideas?"

Ensign Kim said, "Maybe we can modify the shuttle with Slipstream, lower the shields and make a run for it."

"Oh sure, Harry and leave a trail for them to follow and be hunted for the rest of our lives. I either want to die fighting or stand trial," exclaimed Tom.

A few other possibilities were kicked around, including going down to the Shuttle Bay and examining the possibility of installing Slipstream. However, their options seemed limited in actuality to Tom's outburst of fighting or giving up. Finally Janeway called to Chakotay and asked for a progress report.

"We've got an idea, Captain, but we need more time to work out all the details."

"What's the plan, Commander?" asked Kathryn.

"I'd rather not say at the present time if you don't mind. There are some fine details to work out yet. By morning I promise you."

"By morning doesn't leave much time, Chakotay," she said.

"I know, but this plan is rather intricate and needs exact timing. I'll get back to you. Chakotay out."

Janeway looked at Sisko and suddenly saw that his eyes had a twinkle. "What, Benjamin? What are you thinking?"

He smiled. "Three of that group are Maquis, are they not?"

"Yes. So?"

"The Maquis kept the Federation at bay for years, Kathryn. I'll bet my replicator rations they are coming up with a doozy of a plan!"

"Doozy? Why Benjamin, you amaze me," she said laughing.

*******

The next day Chakotay kept putting Kathryn off on divulging the plan, saying only that they needed more time, but that it was coming together beautifully.

"It is a brilliant plan if I do say so myself," he said with a laugh.

"Chakotay, we need to know," said Kathryn with irritation creeping into her voice.

"Just a little more time, Kathryn. Chakotay out."

Kathryn started pacing. Ten, then twenty minutes passed. Just when she was getting ready to hail Chakotay her badge chirped.

"Chakotay here, Kathryn. We've got the plan set, but a hitch has come up. Ten Maquis have decided they want to surrender and have gathered at the Docking Bay. Captain Linn is with them, but they need you to inform Starfleet of this and then you have to open the doors."

"Why have they decided to surrender, Chakotay?" asked Janeway with surprise in her voice.

"All they told me is they talked about it last night and made this decision. Honor it, Kathryn, please."

Janeway was silent. Finally she sighed and said, "I just don't understand, but all right, Chakotay, I'll inform Starfleet and get back to you."

Kathryn then had Tuvok hail Starfleet, informed them ten Maquis wished to surrender and insisted they not try to storm the ship when the bay door was opened. Starfleet agreed, but to be on the safe side, Janeway ordered additional Security to the doors armed with Compression Phaser Rifles. Then she hailed Chakotay.

"Everything is set, Chakotay. They will have someone there to receive the Maquis in ten minutes."

"Thank you, Kathryn. Ten minutes is fine. I am here with them now and it will give me time to tell them goodbye."

"I'll come down, too."

"No Kathryn, they have expressed their fear that if both of us are here Starfleet might try something, so please remain on the Bridge."

Tom suddenly stood and asked permission to go down and tell them goodbye and Harry quickly joined in on the request.

Janeway smiled, yet felt sadness. Her family was breaking up. She finally nodded at both and they hurried from the room.

At the ten-minute mark Janeway hailed Captain Linn. "Everything set Captain?"

"All ready here," Captain Linn replied.

Janeway took a deep breath, tapped her badge and said, "Computer, this is Captain Janeway. I authorize opening the Docking Bay doors, Janeway Delta 47."

"Janeway recognized, Delta 47. Release Complete."

She then looked briefly at Sisko, turned and nodded to Tuvok. "Open the doors, Mr. Tuvok, but leave communications open. I want to listen to this."

The sound of the doors opening was followed by Captain Linn's voice. "Starfleet! Stay where you are. I'll bring these people out to you." Orders were heard but one thing stood out. Almost as if on cue and practiced, Kathryn heard a multi-voiced shout, "Goodbye Captain. We salute you."

Kathryn had a lump form in her throat that felt as big as a meteor and her eyes stung. "Goodbye to all of you and good luck!" she called out.

Then silence. Finally Captain Linn's quiet voice was heard. "All clear, Captain. You can re-seal the doors . . . and good luck to you."

No sooner were the doors shut and sealed by Janeway, when Tuvok frowned and said, "Captain."

"Yes, Tuvok," she answered in a voice filled with sadness.

"The force field went down for one minute when the Docking Bay opened and I'm afraid two shuttles departed Voyager."

"What! Whose in them?" said Janeway sharply as she moved to his station.

Tuvok worked his console, frowned, punched some more, and then looked up. Commander Chakotay, and Lt's Paris, Torres and White Rain are in one and Ensigns Lopez, Carter, Ito, Bear, Murphy . . ."

"Tractor them back, Tuvok, immediately!" interrupted Janeway.

"I'm sorry. Captain. They have force fields up at maximum."

"Hail them!"

"No response."

"Open hailing frequencies. Chakotay! I know you can hear me. Get back here. That's an order!"

Silence.

"Chakotay! What the hell are you doing? Turn those shuttles around and get back to Voyager."

"I'm getting visual, Captain," said Tuvok calmly.

Then the countenance of Chakotay appeared on screen.

Janeway moved quickly down front. "Chakotay! What are you doing?"

He looked silently at her for a moment and then smiled softly. "I'm sorry Kathryn. Don't hate me for this. I . . . we" and he nodded to the others who were standing silently beside and behind him, "We couldn't let you ruin your career. We are the ones they want, Kathryn. They will come after us. The ten who surrendered were just a diversion and Starfleet will only give them a slap on the wrist." He hesitated then trying to find the words before continuing. "We all appreciate your willingness to fight for us, but this way you are now free of Maquis on your ship. You can go see your family then continue with your career, because Starfleet is your life, Kathryn."

"Chakotay, no" said Kathryn softly.

Just then the ship was rocked and White Rain, Torres and Paris immediately went to their stations. Chakotay leaned towards the view screen and said, "I'm not going to have much time, Kathryn, but I want to tell you . . ." and as the ship was again rocked by a direct hit, White Rain called out that shields were down to 50%.

Chakotay then reached out and placed his hand on the screen, fingers spread. "I want to tell you that I love you, Kathryn. I have loved you from the moment you first appeared on my viewscreen at the Array and regardless of what happens I will always love you. You are my soulmate, and if I die, just remember that my love . . . my spirit will live in you forever."

"Chakotay," Kathryn whispered, "Don't do this."

The ship was again rocked and sparks flew from B'Elanna's control. She looked up at the view screen and said, "Goodbye, Captain. Thanks for everything . . . you're the best."

Tom Paris leaned into view and smiled. "Yeah thanks, Captain. You gave me a chance when no one else would and I'll always remember you."

White Rain turned to the viewscreen, nodded his head and said simply, "My Sister."

Chakotay smiled, "Take care of your self Kathryn. Maybe our Spirit Guides will get us together sometime." Then he smiled as yet another hit rocked the shuttle. "Things are getting rather busy here . . ."

"Chakotay, my angry warrior. You promised to never leave me," she said softly as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I will never leave you in spirit, Kathryn," then the screen went black.

Turning quickly to Tuvok she ordered him to get visual back, and as Kathryn turned back she saw the two small ships, twisting and dodging with the Defiant now in stubborn pursuit. Then there was an explosion in the after burner of Chakotay's shuttle and B'Elanna's voice was heard saying "Navigation is down, life support failing," followed by Chakotay's voice calling out, "We've lost all power!"

Tom Paris' voice then called out, "We're going down!"

"Shut off the sound, Tuvok." yelled Janeway as she continued to watch numbly as Chakotay's ship began to spiral down, followed doggedly by the Defiant. Soon all action was lost as the shuttle dropped beneath the cloud cover. Shortly a large white flash illuminated the clouds, indicating the shuttle had crashed.

Janeway walked to her chair and sat down heavily, staring blankly at the floor. Tears flowed down her cheeks and she made no effort to wipe them away.

"It's all my fault," Harry's voice croaked from the doors. Janeway stood and turned to see Harry standing there, tears in his eyes.

"What do you mean, 'your fault', Harry?" asked Janeway softly.

"They talked me into lowering the force field the minute the Docking Bay doors started to open. They said they had it all worked out and nobody was going to get hurt."

"A well executed plan, even though fatal at the end," said Tuvok.

"Agreed," said Sisko, being heard for the first time since this all started. Then he looked at Janeway. "Words fail me, Kathryn. Obviously this was their plan . . . Chakotay's plan from the beginning, to save you." He then hesitated briefly, "I have never in my entire life felt so much love radiating from a person as Chakotay's love for you."

Before she could reply, Tuvok spoke. "I am picking up transmission from the Defiant, Captain. Do you wish to hear it?"

Numbly she nodded her head.

"It is weak and full of static, but understandable," Tuvok said as the sound of static was heard.

". . . Defiant. We have visual of the shuttle. It has crashed on the surface of the planet Dayos IV in a remote desert plane. We see four bodies and our scans show no signs of life. Shall we pick them up?"

Janeway thought the voice coming through the static was vaguely familiar.

"Negative," came Starfleet's reply. "Let them rot and be meat for the vultures. Where is the other shuttle?"

"I'm sorry to report, it got away, sir. We were intent on the Sacajawea and our sensors now show no other ship. Sorry sir."

Janeway immediately told Tuvok to patch her into that communication and when he nodded she said, "This is Captain Janeway. I demand those bodies be picked up and returned to Voyager."

"I'm sorry, Captain," came the muffled reply. "If you have been monitoring our communication you know I have orders not to do that."

"All right, then we will do it. As there are no more Maquis on board ship, we will leave DS9 and take care of it. Where is this planet?"

"Farther than you would expect, Captain. They somehow managed to keep that ship afloat until they reached Dayos IV. It's beyond your transporter range."

"They got that far, Captain, because they are skilled, intelligent people. Give me the coordinates."

"Captain Janeway," interrupted the voice of Admiral Paris." I'm sorry for this. If they had only been willing to surrender . . ."

"Admiral Paris, you never had any intention of taking them alive. They were shot down in cold blood and before I turn Voyager over to Starfleet we are going out and retrieve those bodies, give them a service, then come on into Earth. And if you don't like it you can shoot us down, too!" She then moved to Tuvok's console. "And furthermore, Admiral, once we reach Earth I am resigning my Commission with Starfleet. You will have that intention in writing within the hour. Janeway out."

She turned to Sisko. "Thank you for your support, Benjamin. It was very much appreciated. If they try to put a blemish in your record I will ask for a hearing and explain you were negotiating the whole time. Now I don't meant to be rude, but I wish to depart DS9 immediately and retrieve my people."

Sisko nodded and tapped his badge. "Sisko to Chief O'Brien and Odo."

"Here sir," came the twin replies.

"Voyager is leaving DS9. They have my clearance. And Major Kira?"

"Sir?"

"Send Starfleet a message that I am remaining on Voyager while they retrieve the remains of their people and also, Major, you are in charge of the station. Sisko out."

"Benjamin?" said Janeway with a quizzical look.

"If they think me innocent, they wont . . . hopefully wont . . . disturb Voyager. Besides, I will have to file a report on this incident and a personal report is always so much better than a written one. Carries more weight," he added lowering his voice.

Janeway turned and saw Ensign Kim still rooted to that spot by the doors. "Ensign Kim take your post. We need your help . . . we're a little short-handed now." She turned and started for the Helm, only to be stopped by Sisko.

"If I may, Captain. It's been awhile since I piloted a Starship and I may be a little rusty and take out a pylon or two, but I think Voyager has been through worse than that."

Janeway nodded and Sisko moved immediately to the Helm. She turned to her chair and sat down, but couldn't help looking at the empty chair beside her and felt her heart spasm.

Finally Voyager reached Dayos IV and as they arrived at the coordinates given them were met by the Defiant, which immediately hailed them.

"We have retrieved the remains, Captain, per Admiral Paris' orders."

"And I assume you have also confirmed their identities and that they are indeed dead?"

"Uhm . . . yes maam, and Captain, I'm very sorry Captain. None of us liked what we were ordered to do."

"Janeway to Sick Bay."

"Sick Bay here, Captain."

"Doctor we are transporting the remains of Chakotay, Paris, B'Elanna and White Rain. Will you examine them, clean them up and arrange for four pods. I'll take care of arranging the service."

"Yes Captain."

Turning to Tuvok she ordered him to transport the remains to Sick Bay. Nodding he worked his panel then said, "Transport complete, Captain."

Kathryn sighed. She wanted desperately to go down and see them, but that would have to be later . . . in private. For now they would all be rather busy and she turned to the console that Chakotay usually operated and as her fingers touched the controls she jerked her hand back for a moment, then reached forward again and almost in a caressing touch began to operate the controls.

Shortly she was hailed by Sick Bay.

"Yes Doctor?" she said trembling.

"I just wanted to confirm the remains are those of the Commander and Lt's Paris, Torres and White Rain. I just thought you would like to know."

"Thank you Doctor," she said softly.

"I'm . . . very sorry, Captain."

"Understood, Doctor, thank you."

That night try as she might, Kathryn could not bring herself to go down to Sick Bay and had finally ordered the Doctor to place them in pods and transport them to the Memorial Room. She would have the service tomorrow.

When Voyager finally reached hailing distance of the big blue sphere of Earth, she had ordered all activities to cease so they may have the service, and announced that all were welcome to come.

Sisko and Tuvok walked with her and upon reaching the doors of the Memorial Room she hesitated and looked at the Honor Guard in full dress uniform, standing guard outside the door. Taking a deep breath she steeled herself and entered.

Immediately upon seeing the four pods she felt her knees go weak, and only then realized that both Tuvok and Sisko had gently taken her elbows. All lids of the pods were raised to allow viewing and she walked forward slowly. Finally she hesitated, nodded to both Tuvok and Sisko, and then walked alone to the first pod, her legs trembling. Looking down, she saw White Rain, resplendent in his Native garments, and wondered briefly who might have done that.

She turned to the next pod and there was B'Elanna, half Klingon, half human, who would never again have to fight herself on that. Next she came to Paris, and even in death he seemed to have a cocky smile on his face.

She turned towards the last pod, her heart beating furiously, but could not make her feet move. Finally forcing her self, she started forward hesitantly, but upon reaching the pod could not look down. Instead she stared straight ahead. Finally, she slowly lowered her eyes and looked upon the handsome face of Chakotay. He looked so peaceful. She wanted to cry out his name but could not even open her mouth. Tears coursed their way in rivulets down her cheeks and dropped on Chakotay's chest. With one hand she grasped the edge of the pod so tight her knuckles turned white.

After a moment, she pulled her right hand from behind her back and carefully placed Chakotay's Medicine Bundle beside him, then reached inside her jacket and pulled out a white feather Chakotay had given her on New Earth and slipped it between his frozen hands. Next, placing two fingers on her lips and taking them to Chakotay's cold, but still sensual lips, she whispered, "Chakotay, my angry warrior, my friend, my soulmate, my love."

Turning she nodded to Tuvok, who stepped forward and sealed each pod, then moved them into position on the rails, and as the Boatswain's whistle sounded, they were released and gracefully slid down through the opening and floated majestically into space.

Without another word Janeway abruptly left the room and headed for her quarters, where she would remain until Voyager docked above Earth.

********

Starfleet sent a message shortly after the service had ended stating the ten Maquis who had surrendered were to have their trial three days after Voyager's arrival at Earth. Kathryn resolved to attend every day and knew in her heart the rest of the crew would be there showing their support as well.

Finally Voyager reached Earth and although there was a big show of "Welcome Home Voyager" very few of the crew felt the elation they should have. Most, including Janeway, were bitter about what had happened to their comrades, and although glad to be back with family and friends, did not enjoy the superficial welcome.

Kathryn had followed through and tendered her resignation the day after arriving. Much to her surprise, Tuvok, Harry and eighty others had also resigned. Starfleet had reluctantly accepted the resignations, saying perhaps they would change their minds later and all would be welcomed back.

True to their word the trial started the third day and Kathryn felt immense pride that without exception her crew was there every day. They had even worked out a rotation that allowed them all to be in the courtroom at various times every day! Tuvok put off rejoining his wife and Captain Sisko delayed his return to DS9 so they could sit with Kathryn each day. Captain Linn was also at the trial most days, but did not initiate any conversation with Janeway, merely a nod a time or two. She understood.

Kathryn had been called to testify the first day and had spent the whole day on the witness stand. At one point, the Prosecutor suddenly asked, "Did you love them?"

"Of course I loved them. They were magnificent and did an outstanding job. Some as you know, gave their lives protecting Voyager. How could I not love them?"

"Did you love Commander Chakotay?"

"Of course, I just answered that. I loved all of them."

"No, Captain . . . uhm I mean Miss Janeway, were you in love with Commander Chakotay?"

Kathryn looked at him. "What has that question got to do with these men on trial?"

"For one thing, it might affect the truth of your testimony on these men."

"That's ridiculous!" Kathryn almost shouted. "I have told the truth, and my feelings have no affect on my answers!"

"Then you admit you're in love with Commander Chakotay, who was at one time their Commanding Officer!"

"Commander Chakotay is dead, thanks to Starfleet! He was the most loyal First Officer Starfleet could ever . . ."

"Just answer the question, Miss Janeway," interrupted the Judge.

Kathryn looked the prosecutor in the eye, and then said very firmly, "Yes, I love Commander Chakotay with all my being. But neither of us acted on any feelings for fear of interfering with the integrity of the command structure."

"Now remember Miss Janeway you are still under oath. Do you say your testimony here today is untainted or unaffected in any way due to this love?"

"I most emphatically do!"

The day continued on, with the Prosecutor feeling quite smug he had paved the way for doubt about her and all other crewmembers testimony regarding the ten Maquis. But Kathryn had stood her ground and remained firm and when the trial was adjourned until morning, she was excused from further testimony.

Tuvok was called the next day and his answers were typically Vulcan, precise and succinct. Only one worrisome moment came when he was asked about the escape plan and Kathryn was concerned he would bring up the name of Captain Linn. However, he replied that to his knowledge no one else in the crew knew of the attempt until it was underway, which was correct in a sense.

Captain Linn was scheduled the third day and his testimony lasted virtually all day. When asked about Captain Janeway's actions to obstruct the arrest of the Maquis, he had called it "loyalty to her crew" and then looking directly at Kathryn said that if he ever served on a Starship, she would be the Captain he would like to serve under.

But in the end, after three weeks of what Kathryn had begun to term a "Mock Trial," Chakotay was again right. They weren't interested in these men, attested by the verdict: One year, with one year suspended sentence because of service on Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. They were all released.

With the trial now over, the crew had arranged a final get together and Starfleet had, in grandiose fashion, offered the use of the Enterprise's Cargo Bay and had even provided the food, which everyone accepted, saying sarcastically, "It was the least they could do!"

Captain Sisko appeared for a short time, and then had to leave for DS9. Captain Linn joined the festivities, albeit now in street clothes. When Janeway asked why he replied simply "I resigned. You opened my eyes, Captain, and if you're not happy doing something, why do it!"

Kathryn made her way around to everyone, saying her goodbyes. When the dinner was over Tuvok left to rejoin his family and Harry said he would first visit his folks then decide what he was going to do. Finally, Kathryn herself left and went to her home.

********

The next morning several packages arrived. Most were her possessions, which she had not bothered to remove from Voyager. Two of the packages, however, were Chakotay's belongings, with the messenger saying that Starfleet thought she might like to have them. Later, another messenger had arrived with a small hand sized case, saying it was from the former EMH of Voyager.

When Kathryn opened it she discovered it was a computer disk and her mouth went dry. Hesitatingly she sat down at her console and dropped it in its slot, then gasped when the face of Chakotay appeared. He smiled as he looked out from the screen and said, "If you are playing this Kathryn, it means that I have died and the Doctor has given you the disc. I don't have much to say really, just want to sing you a song. The words are full of meaning and in a way prophetic. It's called We Live On Borrowed Time and was written by a man named David Friedman." With that he picked up his guitar, strummed a few chords, looked up and in a soft baritone voice began to sing.

I never thought that there could be

A love like yours and mine

I never dreamed that I would see

The day that I would find

A love that feels so right

But here we are tonight

And now the only thing we really need is time.

Kathryn's eyes began to sting. She never knew that Chakotay could sing and he had such a beautiful voice.

We live on borrowed time

No one can be sure

When the loan will finally come due

But I'm loving all of mine

I know what time is for

I borrowed it

So I can spend it all right here with you.

There was a time when I believed

That life held guarantees

There was a time when I was sure

My future was secure

But life had other plans

The future's . . .

Kathryn sat with tears streaming down her face, no longer hearing the words. She reached forward and touched the viewscreen and looked into Chakotay's brown eyes, which them selves were now filled with tears from the emotion of the words he was singing, his rich baritone voice resounding through the room.

Chakotay's voice then lowered to almost a whisper as he sang the last few words and Kathryn could barely see the screen she was crying so hard. When the song ended, Chakotay smiled and while seemingly looking straight at her said softly, "I love you Kathryn." Then the screen went black.

Kathryn sat for a long time, crying silently. She wanted to play the disc again, to hear those words, to hear the whole song, but didn't have the courage. That was going to have to wait until she was mentally stronger.

Kathryn then decided she had to get away and the next day flew home and spent a week with her mother. She also stopped briefly to visit Mark and his wife. They now had three children and were very happy. During her visit he had vented his anger at Starfleet's action on her return, but he also expressed his heartfelt sorrow for her loss.

The day after she arrived back home she was shocked and surprised to receive a death threat, calling her a Traitor and a Maquis Lover. The threats continued for days, some more threatening than others. After one particularly vicious and frightening threat she had reported it to Starfleet, but as she was no longer in the service, their investigation was brief and they chalked it up to some 'crank' and said it would probably end soon. Finally she dismissed them from her mind, not really caring whether they killed her or not.

Her main objective now was trying to keep busy. This was fairly easy during the day, but the nights were the worst. She would sit and stare out the window for hours, sometimes holding the only picture she had of she and Chakotay together tight against her chest.

Another week went by and Starfleet contacted her one day asking if she would take command of another ship and she had curtly turned them down. Harry came by another day and they spent the day reminiscing and alternately laughing and crying. When he left that night she felt terribly lonely and sat and cried for what seemed like hours.

Several times since returning home she had tried the Vision Quest, trying to contact her Spirit Guide and contact Chakotay, but had failed miserably each time. She even tried planting a garden, but the memories of New Earth flooded her senses to the point she couldn't remember what she had planted. She had never felt like this in her entire life, so terribly lonely and devoid of all emotion . . . except tears, which never seemed to stop.

This night she sat and tried to read a book. About 2 am she tossed it down and retired for the evening, eventually falling into what was becoming normal for her, a restless sleep.

Suddenly a hand being placed roughly over her mouth awakened her. She was jerked to a sitting position and someone put a blindfold over her eyes and then a gag in her mouth. Next she was yanked to her feet and her robe pulled on roughly, her arms grabbed and she was propelled towards the door. Once outside, her hands were tied behind her back and she was unceremoniously shoved into what she eventually determined was a Hovercraft, as she could feel the vibration as they lifted off the ground.

Kathryn felt no fear and offered little if any resistance to this violent action. If these were the people responsible for the death threats, so be it. She really didn't care what they did to her and at this point in her life would welcome the black finality of death.

After an indeterminate amount of time, Kathryn felt the craft land and once again she was violently jerked to her feet and shoved out the door, sending her sprawling on her knees. Two pairs of hands lifted her to her feet and she was pushed up what seemed to be a ramp, then led to an area and made to sit down. Her hands were untied from in back, and retied in front. Then further prodding made her realize it was a bed and they wanted her to lie down. Having done so, she was startled when her hair was grabbed and her head yanked to one side. She felt a hypo spray placed against her neck and her final thoughts before everything went black was 'please let it be poison.'

********

Slowly Kathryn began to regain consciousness. She had a wicked headache and realized she must have received a very potent injection. How long had she been out she wondered. Lying still and straining to hear she realized from the vibration and various beeps they were in a shuttle. Suddenly two hands pulled her to a sitting position and the gag was removed from her mouth. Her mouth was so dry she couldn't even move her tongue. Then she felt a cup placed to her lips and drank greedily, retaining one mouthful and swishing it around in her mouth. Finally she felt she could talk and asked, "Where am I? Who are you? Where are you taking me?"

Silence was her answer to every question, so she tried again. "Are you responsible for my death threats? Are you going to kill me?"

Still she received no answer.

Sensing whoever had given her water leave, she sat for a while longer, straining to hear any voice or sound. Hearing nothing she decided to lie back down and await the consequences. After what seemed like hours, she became aware the ship was landing. Again she was lifted to her feet, but this time her hands were untied. Then she was led for a few steps, heard a door hiss open and led down a ramp.

A soft grass-like carpet was felt under her feet and they started walking, again with someone on each side holding her arms. The walk continued for what seemed like an hour before she was stopped.

"Where are we?" she asked. Then the person on her right released her arm and she felt the blindfold starting to come loose. A hand was placed gently over her eyes as the blindfold was pulled away from her face and she heard "Let your eyes slowly get used to the light, Captain."

That voice! Whose was it? She knew it was familiar. Then the hand was removed and the bright sunlight still caused her to start blinking even as she turned to see who had spoken to her. It was Ensign Lopez! Turning to her right she saw Harry Kim, who was grinning from ear to ear.

"Sorry to handle you so roughly, Captain," said Ensign Lopez, "but it was necessary should any eyes have been watching and to convince you of possible danger."

"You sent the death threats?"

He nodded.

"Why? What's going on? Where are we?" she asked feeling very confused.

Then she heard a noise from in front and turned her head. Out of the dark shadows ahead stepped Chakotay. "You're home, Kathryn," he said softly.

"Chakotay!" yelled Kathryn and flew across the distance separating them and into his arms. A long embrace with kisses ensued for several minutes. "How? . . . Why? . . . she managed to get out between kisses.

"Well the least you can do is welcome the rest of us," and B'Elanna stepped out of the shadows, followed by Tom, and then White Rain.

Kathryn ran and gave each a big hug before returning to Chakotay's arms.

"I don't understand!" she said with tears of joy running down her cheeks. "You were all dead! I saw you. I felt the cold. I saw you all float off into space!" she said between sniffles.

"It's a long story, my love," said Chakotay, and we have the rest of our lives to talk about it."

"But I want to know how you could possibly pull all that off!"

"Still trying to act like the Captain, isn't she gang," laughed Chakotay.

"Typical," said Tom impishly, only to be punched on the shoulder by B'Elanna.

"All right, let's explain to the lady," and they all proceeded to sit down on the ground in a circle. "First off," said Chakotay, "The plan was brilliant."

"Obviously," laughed Kathryn as she sat down between Chakotay's legs, leaned against his chest and felt his arms enfold her. "You had everyone in Starfleet and everyone on Voyager convinced you had been killed!"

"Next," continued Chakotay, "Captain Linn really isn't Captain Linn."

At that Captain Linn stepped out of the shadows. "Grey Wolf at your service m'lady," he said bowing, then sat down beside Lopez.

Kathryn laughed delightedly. "Tell me more."

"Well," said Chakotay, "It took me awhile to recognize him, but Captain Linn is really a Maquis and he infiltrated Starfleet quite awhile back. It was only when he suggested joining us and acting like a spy for us that I started to catch on."

"How?" asked Kathryn.

"When he mentioned that Starfleet felt we might resist, he looked directly at me on that word. I played a hunch and made the suggestion of hatching a plan with him and including B'Elanna and White Rain. Turned out I was right. Most of the plan was Grey Wolf's, but the rest of us contributed.

"Don't forget to mention that I also caught on, Chakotay," added Tom.

"Right. Tom barged into our meeting at one point, said he knew what was going on, that we were going to save you from endangering Voyager, yourself and all the rest, and that we needed a pilot and he wanted in. I knew instinctively I could trust him after he had gone down into that hole to rescue me that time and White Rain agreed. The rest was quite simple. We went to the other Maquis, selected those to make a run for it in the other shuttle and the remainder immediately volunteered to give themselves up as a diversion. Then Tom convinced Harry to open the Shuttle Bay doors at the exact instance the Docking Bay doors were opened, and the plan went into action."

"With Tom flying our Shuttle, Grey Wolf, as Captain Linn, was able to pilot the Defiant and chased us. He had to make it look good, so we did sustain damage. Then we deliberately crashed the Sacajawea, set an explosive in the Shuttle when we got to the planet, then ran out and sprawled on the ground as if dead just before it detonated."

"But how could you fake your death so convincingly?" asked Kathryn.

"I will take credit for that," and the Doctor smugly stepped out from the shadows. "I found out Starfleet was going to turn me off and study me, and well . . . I couldn't accept that! When Chakotay came down to Sick Bay at one point to 'steal' a hypo spray, I complained about it to him, quite bitterly I might add, and he pulled me into the plan."

Chakotay smiled. "The Doctor actually added more credence to our plan, as Grey Wolf took the Doctor onto the Defiant for the chase and when the shuttle crashed he beamed him to the surface and . . ." Chakotay then nodded to the Doctor.

"Well, first of all," continued the Doctor, "I made sure they were alive, then I administered a sedative to keep them out until I could get their "remains" back to Voyager, while telling Captain Linn . . . uhm Grey Wolf, they were dead, and he reported that to Starfleet."

"My report that scans showed them dead was false. I never used the scans on their bodies and Starfleet didn't question it," said Grey Wolf.

"And then," said the Doctor, "Voyager showed up just like we thought our dear Captain would and . . ."

"Wait a minute, Doctor," interrupted Kathryn. "I talked to you in Sick Bay, yet you say you were on the planet, on the Defiant?"

The Doctor turned to Chakotay. "Told you she would catch that!" to which Chakotay laughed and hugged Kathryn tighter to him.

"Actually, I rigged a recording that reacted to your voice and then when they beamed the four bodies to Voyager, I beamed with them and as I am a Hologram . . ."

"You didn't register and Tuvok showed only four bodies! Brilliant thinking all of you," said Kathryn smiling.

Tom and B'Elanna laughed. "Well to tell you the truth every time we finished a part of the plan we went back over it using your thinking," said Tom.

"Actually found a few flaws that way," laughed B'Elanna.

Then the Doctor continued. "Once I had them on board I hoped your grief would keep you out of Sick Bay long enough for me to put them in a stasis mode at super low maintenance plus extra centigrade chilling so they would feel very cold to the touch. Those two factors allowed us to open the pod during the ceremony, as I felt your grief would prevent any long ceremony," he said with a smug look on his face.

At this point Ensign Lopez entered the explanation. "Once you had the service, deployed the pods and left, we returned when our sensors showed no other activity in the area, retrieved the pods, brought them here and revived them per the Doctors instructions and a hypo he gave us."

"Magnificent," said Kathryn as she stretched her neck up to give Chakotay a kiss. "But where are the others from Shuttle two?"

"We thought you'd never ask Captain," and Ensigns Carter, Ito, Bear and Murphy, along with Crewmen Denier, Tomei and Connors walked out from the shadows. "Now that we've seen you all together, Ensign Lopez is taking us back to DayosIV where we will turn ourselves in, hope for a sentence like the others received, then find our families. Kathryn stood and went to each, giving them a big hug and thanks for their help.

Then returning to Chakotay's arms, she admonished, "Don't you ever do anything like that to me again Chakotay. I have felt absolutely miserable since that day. From now on we do everything together, regardless of what it is."

He kissed the top or her head before saying, "I'm sorry my love, but you wouldn't have accepted that plan and your sorrow was so genuine Starfleet didn't question anything."

"Yeah," piped up Tom. "When Lopez suddenly contacted Harry he couldn't believe he had been duped that bad."

"When did you find out, Harry," asked Kathryn.

"Actually last night. When Lopez contacted me and explained the kidnapping I jumped at the chance to be with everyone again."

"And as a side note, Kathryn, I kept pretty close tabs on you," said Chakotay with a smile.

She turned and looked at him with a frown, then saw him glance at Grey Wolf. Turning, she exclaimed, "That's why you were at the trial every day!"

"Yep," he smiled, "And if you had been more like yourself you would have spotted me at your mom's, at Marks, at . . . need I go on?"

Kathryn turned back to Chakotay and playfully slapped his shoulder. "My angry warrior, watching out for me at all times," she murmured, and then kissed him as he smiled contentedly.

"Uhm, Captain . . . What happened to 7 of 9? I never saw her at the trial?" said Harry, and then glared at B'Elanna when she smirked.

"We found a Cousin and one Grandparent in Kentucky and slipped her out to them. It will take awhile for her to get used to living on earth and we didn't want her bothered by the press."

"Actually . . ." said Chakotay . . .

"The press didn't bother me as much as my Cousin," continued 7 of 9 stepping from the shadows. "I much prefer the company of all of you."

Kathryn smiled and looked at Chakotay. "And how did you manage this, oh sly one?"

"Actually Grey Wolf found her and then Lopez slipped in one night, told her we were alive, and she virtually picked him up by the scruff of the neck and marched him to the shuttle."

Lopez laughed. "I told her I took that as a yes that she wanted to be with us."

"It is preferable, although the work Chakotay has had us doing is very tiresome and hard on the hands."

"Work!" exclaimed Kathryn. "Like what?"

"Wait until you see, Captain," smiled B'Elanna.

Kathryn stood up again and looked at everyone. "Maybe you haven't heard. I'm no longer a Captain. I resigned from Starfleet, so you all just better start calling me Kathryn."

Everyone just looked at her for a long moment, before B'Elanna finally spoke. "Wellll," she said dragging out the word . . ."that might take awhile," and then they all laughed.

"I assure you it will come naturally. You know, we are missing someone from our family. Where's Neelix?"

"Right here, Captain." said the pudgy Talaxian as he came running out of the shadows. "Sorry I'm late, but I have been cooking a delicious Leola Root Stew!" and as everybody's faces fell he laughed delightedly, "Just kidding! Actually I made some Mushroom Soup! Oh Captain, my Captain," he said bubbling with enthusiasm, "It is so good to see you again!" and ran over and gave her a big hug.

Kathryn laughed. She hadn't felt this good for two months! Turning to Chakotay she asked, "Okay, Chakotay, now what have you been up to while you were 'dead?'"

Chakotay laughed with delight at having his Kathryn back and said, "I told you guys she's a wheedler! Ok, follow me."

When they reached their 'city', Chakotay stopped before starting the tour and explained they had named it "New Earth II" and Kathryn looked up into his eyes and said softly, "I should have known."

As they walked from building to building Kathryn fairly bubbled with excitement. Finally Chakotay stopped and pointing to a log house said, "This is our home, Kathryn."

"Our home. Oh, Chakotay!" Then she stepped close and slipped her arms around his neck. "This may be very forward of me, but I want to ask you . . ."

Chakotay placed his fingers over her mouth and said, "I'll take care of that question in private, but for now I want you to see your tub!"

"A bathtub! Oh my love, you have thought of everything!"

Later that evening, when everyone had retired to his or her own homes, Chakotay slipped his arms around Kathryn's waist and she put her arms around his neck. "Now Kathryn, as to our living together. I'm afraid I'm a little old fashioned and it so happens White Rain is also a Priest . . ."

"I thought you'd never ask," she said as she kissed him. "And before you change your mind, the answer is yes."
