JC Fan Fiction
by Dee Price
"Chakotay to Janeway."
"Janeway here," she said in a very detached voice.
"Kathryn, got a minute?"
"I'm just going over some reports. Why? Is there a problem?"
"No problem. Be right there."
Before long her door chimed and she called out, "Enter."
Chakotay strode in with a big grin on his face. "Kathryn, you'll never guess what!"
"I'm not in the mood for games, Chakotay," she said still looking at her reports. "So say what you have to say."
"Well I was looking around in the ship's data base last night and in 20th Century Earth I found a subject called The Internet . . ."
"Inter what?" interrupted Janeway.
"The Internet. It was part of the World Wide Web and . . ."
"World Wide Web? Chakotay what on earth are you talking about?" she asked as she glanced up with a perplexed look on her face.
"Well if you let me finish. Anyway, I was 'surfing the net' as they said back then, and found this subject called JC Fan Fiction and that title sort of intrigued me for some reason, so I looked it up. Seems there was this base of massive fan fiction . . ."
"What on earth is fan fiction?"
"Kathryn! Stop interrupting me. Oh well" he said in a resigned tone. "You know when you like something a lot you become very interested in it - you become a fan of it . . . anyway, there was this fan fiction and there were writings about a Starship called Voyager . . ."
Janeway leaned back and smirked. "Voyager? There wasn't any ship by that name before. Chakotay you are just pulling my leg!"
"No I'm not Kathryn! Swear to God. The strange thing is this ship is lost in the Delta Quadrant and . . ."
Janeway threw her hands up in the air. "Now I know you are making all this up!"
"No, Kathryn, I swear. Anyway this JC fan fiction involved the Captain and First Officer who were deeply in love but didn't, or couldn't, tell the other . . ."
"Chakotay . . . What are you up to?" she asked with a sly tone and eyes narrowing.
"Nothing! I'm trying to tell you what I found. Anyway they were in love, but the Captain wouldn't tell the First Officer about her feelings because of what she termed Integrity of the Command Structure and that if she told him . . . acknowledged her love for him . . . she was afraid she wouldn't send him on dangerous away missions, just keep him tucked safely away in a corner somewhere and . . ."
Janeway smirked and shook her head, her expression full of disbelief.
"Chakotay!" she interjected in an exasperated tone, "You are just wasting my time with this made up story . . . and, I might add, wasting your time on such nonsense. If you are lacking something to do I'm sure I can find something useful to keep you busy and off this Inter whatever."
"No I'm not wasting my time and I'm getting awfully tired of saying that . . . anyway, Kathryn, they do get together and it's beautiful, just beautiful! They are very much in love and everything is great and yada, yada, yada . . ."
"Yada, yada? Now you're talking in riddles. What does yada, yada mean?"
Chakotay blushed and said, "You know."
"No I don't! Now stop this gibberish and tell me."
"Well, uhm, you know, two people in love and . . . well . . . . . . you know" and he stopped and blushed even deeper red.
Janeway stared him and suddenly her eyes went wide, she felt her face getting hot, and mumbled "Oh." Then she suddenly stood. "No! How dare they take liberties with my life!"
"Kathryn it wasn't your life. This was fiction and from the 20th century, remember?"
"Oh. Yes that's right. But what utter nonsense!"
"They are very interesting stories, Kathryn. Unbelievably there was a whole huge fan base writing these stories. Seems there was a show and the writers wouldn't let the two of them get together, so the fans started writing these stories about this certain Captain and First Officer . . ."
"I've had enough of your shenanigans, Chakotay! You're definitely pulling my leg and I don't have time for this kind of thing. Now I have to get back to these reports so dismissed. Honestly," she grumbled as she waved him out and once again looked down at her desk and picked up a PADD.
Chakotay grinned and got up to leave. "You should check it out Kathryn. There are some very good authors and stories on those sites." Then, as he headed for the door he started whistling.
Janeway gave a big sigh, put her PADD back down on the desk, leaned back in her chair and asked, "What now, Chakotay? What are you whistling? I've never heard that tune before."
He grinned, his dimples deepening and his eyes sparkling. "Just a song that seemed to play on a lot of those JC fiction web sites."
"What's the name, Chakotay? I have to pry everything out of you today!"
"The song is called Voyager."
She rolled her eyes. "I'm sorry I asked. Now get out of here."
Chakotay grinned again and left.
After the doors hissed shut Janeway sat staring into space for a while, and then leaned forward to her computer and typed in "Search for JC Fan Fiction."
